The Second Sunday After Pentecost May 29, 2016, 9:15am St. Paul s Chapel For a World of Good Broadway and Fulton Street, New York City O God, living Lord, you are the author of faith. Engrave on our hearts the gospel revealed in Jesus Christ and brought near to us by your Holy Spirit, that we may attest to this faith in lives that are pleasing to you. Amen.
Acclamation Please stand as you are able. The Entrance Rite Blessed be the one, holy, and living God. Glory to God for ever and ever. Hymn in Procession The Second Sunday after Pentecost 9:15am Holy Eucharist Rite II May 29,
Wonder, Love, and Praise Hymnal 787. Words: South African; Music: Siyahamba, South African, 1984 Utryck, admin. Walton Music Corporation. Used by permission. 3
The Collect of the Day The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O God, your never-failing providence sets in order all things both in heaven and earth: Put away from us, we entreat you, all hurtful things, and give us those things which are profitable for us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Liturgy of the Word The First Reading Kings 18:20-39 Please be seated. Reader A Reading from the First Book of Kings. The king got the prophets together at Mount Carmel. Elijah said to the people, How can you keep your feet in two different parades at the same time? If God is your God, follow him. If Baal is your god, then go with him. But decide already! The people had nothing to say about that. Elijah said, Come over here, everybody, and they did. Elijah saw that the altar they d built to worship God had been destroyed, so he put it back together again. He took twelve stones, because there were twelve tribes of Israel, and he built another altar. Then he dug a trench around the altar, put wood on the top of it and a bull on the top of the wood. Then he doused the whole thing with water. Then he doused it again. He told them to do it a third time and this time to fill the trench with water, too. They were going to offer the bull to God. When the whole altar and wood were soaking wet, Elijah said, O God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, let everyone today know you are God and that I work for you. Answer me, God, so that all these people will turn their hearts over to you. And God threw fire from the heavens on the altar, and even though everything was as wet as it could be, the wood, the stones, the dust, and even the water went up in flames! WOW! exclaimed the people. They fell on the ground and worshipped God, convinced that the Lord who had made this happen was their God. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 4
Gospel Acclamation Please stand as you are able. Wonder, Love, and Praise Hymnal 711 Words: St. 1, Matthew 6:33; adapt. Karen Lafferty (20th cent.). Used by permission. Music: Seek Ye First, Karen Lafferty (20th cent.) The Holy Gospel Luke 7:1-10 Deacon Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ. When Jesus was done preaching in the countryside, he came to a town called Capernaum. A highly decorated Roman soldier lived there. Someone who worked for him was very sick and going to die. When the soldier heard about Jesus and his healing power, he had some people from Jesus church beg Jesus to come and heal his dying friend. They said, Jesus, you ve got to help him. He s a good guy, even if he is a Roman, Jesus. He is kind to us. He even built our church for us! So Jesus went with them to go heal this dying man. As they were on their way, they were met by the soldier s people who sent this message from the soldier: Don t bother coming any further. I am not worthy to have you at my house. That s why I didn t come to meet you myself. I believe that if you just say the word, your word is so powerful my friend will be healed. I understand power, because I am a powerful man myself, in charge of many soldiers. I know you have God s power, and God s power is in your word. Jesus couldn t believe how much faith this man had in him! He turned to the people who had gathered around him and said, Wow, did you hear what he just said? I haven t heard faith like that among my people who know God! The soldier s people went home after giving Jesus their message and they found the dying man perfectly healthy again. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. 5
The Sermon The Rev. Phillip A. Jackson, Vicar Silence follows the sermon. Nicene Creed Please stand as you are able. Words: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926) 1993 Hope Publishing, Inc. Used by permission. Music: Nettleton, Melody from A Repository of Sacred Music, Part II, 1813 The Prayers of the Reader Reader Reader Creator God, in love you created this world, all of its colorful plants and flowers. In love you created our fuzzy pets, beasts of the forest and every creeping crawling thing. In love you created us! Help us to live in harmony with all your creation, and care for all you have made. God be with us, within us, behind us, before us. We pray for the Church Universal; that all who have been united by the love of Jesus Christ may be inspired to further God s mission of love in the world. God be with us, within us, behind us, before us. We pray for this nation. For our President and the Congress. For all who live in this state and city. Help us to be caring and compassionate citizens and to work for the common good. God be with us, within us, behind us, before us. 6
Reader Reader Reader We pray for all who struggle. For those who cannot see a way through broken relationships, difficult financial realities, emotional darkness, and deep loneliness. May they find you in the most hopeless places. We pray also for those who care for them, let their hugs, flowers, food and gifts be signs of good news and hope. God be with us, within us, behind us, before us. We pray for all who are joyful. We celebrate the movement through milestones: births, graduations, new jobs, new relationships and the promise of something wonderful. In our moments of blessing: God be with us, within us, behind us, before us. We pray for those who have died and those who love them. Help us to cherish the memory and lessons, of the departed. May the Spirit of God, embrace those who are sad, guide those who are in transition, and strengthen all who comfort them. God be with us, within us, behind us, before us. Almighty God, by your Holy Spirit you have made us one with your saints in heaven and on earth; grant that in our earthy pilgrimage we may ever be supported by this fellowship of love and prayer, and know ourselves surrounded by their witness to your power and mercy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Confession and Absolution Deacon All The Peace Let us return to the Lord our God, saying: Most merciful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we confess that we have sinned in thought, word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be; that we may do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you, our God. Amen. May God forgive our sins, and bring us to the fellowship of the Holy table with the saints for ever. Amen. Please stand as you are able. The Holy Eucharist The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The greet one another in the name of the Lord. Please be seated. 7
Welcome Special Music At the Presentation Please stand as you are able. Hymnal 380 Words: Isaac Watts ( ), para. of Psalm 117. St. 3, Thomas Ken ( ) Music: Old 100th, melody from Pseaumes octante trois de David, 1551, alt.; harm. after Louis Bourgeois (1510?-1561?) The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. All thanks and praise are yours at all times and in all places, our true and loving God; through Jesus Christ, your eternal Word, the Wisdom from on high by whom you created all things. You laid the foundations of the world and enclosed the sea when it burst out from the womb; You brought forth all creatures of the earth and gave breath to humankind. Wondrous are you, Holy One of Blessing, all you create is a sign of hope for our journey; And so as the morning stars sing your praises we join the heavenly beings and all creation as we shout with joy: 8
Sanctus 9
Music: From Deutsche Messe, Franz Peter Schubert ( ); arr. Richard Proulx ( ) 1985 GIA Publications, Inc. Please stand or kneel as you are able. All All Glory and honor are yours, Creator of all, your Word has never been silent; you called a people to yourself, as a light to the nations, you delivered them from bondage and led them to a land of promise. Of your grace, you gave Jesus to be human, to share our life, to proclaim the coming of your holy reign and give himself for us, a fragrant offering. Through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, you have freed us from sin, brought us into your life, reconciled us to you, and restored us to the glory you intend for us. We thank you that on the night before he died for us Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, gave it to his friends and said: Take, eat, this is my Body, broken for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper Jesus took the cup of wine, said the blessing, gave it to his friends and said: Drink this, all of you: this cup is the new Covenant in my Blood, poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. And so, remembering all that was done for us: the cross, the tomb, the resurrection and ascension, longing for Christ s coming in glory, and presenting to you these gifts your earth has formed and human hands have made, we acclaim you, O Christ: Dying, you destroyed our death. Rising, you restored our life. Christ Jesus, come in glory! Send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts of bread and wine that they may be to us the Body and Blood of your Christ. Grant that we, burning with your Spirit s power, may be a people of hope, justice and love. Giver of Life, draw us together in the Body of Christ, and in the fullness of time gather us with all your people into the joy of our true eternal home. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, we worship you our God and Creator in voices of unending praise. Blessed are you now and for ever. AMEN. 10
All And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Fraction The breaks the bread. The bread which we break is a sharing in the Body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The Gifts of God for the of God. Please be seated. All who hunger for God are cordially invited to this table, including children. You may consume the bread and then drink from the chalice (please grasp the bottom of the chalice to guide it to your lips). Also, you may dip the bread in the wine and then consume it, or you may leave the bread in your palm for the chalice-bearer to dip in the wine and place on your tongue. Gluten-free wafers are available; please indicate to the priest that you require this alternative. Those who do not wish to receive communion are welcome to come forward for a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest. If you would like to pray with someone confidentially for any need in your life or others, please go to the altar rail during the communion time. 11
Communion Hymn Hymnal 325 Words: African-American spiritual Music: Let Us Break Bread, Afro-American spiritual; arr. David Hurd (b. 1950) Concluding Rite The Post-Communion Prayer Please stand as you are able. All Let us pray. God of abundance, you have fed us with the bread of life and cup of salvation; you have united us with Christ and one another; and you have made us one with all your people in heaven and on earth. Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit, that we may proclaim your redeeming love to the world and continue for ever in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen. 12
The Blessing May the God who dances in creation, who embraces us with human love, who shakes our lives like thunder, bless us and drive us out with power to fill the world with her justice. Amen. Closing Hymn Hymnal 376 Words: Henry Van Dyke ( ) Music: Hymn to Joy, Ludwig van Beethoven ( ); adapt. Edward Hodges ( ), alt. Dismissal Let us go forth into the world, rejoicing in the power of the Spirit. Thanks be to God. Postlude 13

Congregational Voice And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush; and he looked, and lo, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed... Then he said, Do not come near; put off your shoes from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground (Exodus 3:2, 5). Like our biblical ancestors, we cannot afford to dismiss such signs and messages. Living theology begins this fact, that our relationship with God is not built on abstract doctrines but with the daily struggle of living communities in the wider creation. For we are the carriers of God in the world, ablaze with the glory of God. And God s Spirit isn t only alive in the bush, or the stars in the cosmos, or in our biblical ancestors. Moses, as God s first and erstwhile friend, shares as much. This passage inspires me to love, become, and do the same.
