P O almighty God, merciful Father, C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. 6 Prayer for Maundy Thursday P: Lord of life and death, at Your chosen time You sent Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to carry our sin to the tree of the cross, and then on the third day You raised Him from the dead. For this we give You thanks and praise saying, This is the day the Lord has made; P: Blessed Lord, anoint Your Church with the Holy Spirit and with power so that it may boldly witness to Christ s resurrection. Grant that all who hear the message of His empty tomb may turn from sin, trust in Christ, receive the forgiveness of sins in His name, and join in saying, This is the day the Lord has made; give leaders who will speak truth and govern wisely. Where there is hatred, bring understanding; where there is war, bring peace. Set our minds on things above that when Jesus comes again in glory, everyone may say, This is the day the Lord has made; P: Heavenly Father, rescue those captive to prejudice, drugs, or violence. Renew and restore the victims of crime, and lead those in our jails to a new and right way of life. Protect all who police our neighborhoods and cities. Give opportunities to those seeking work and those longing for relief from bad times. Bless our schools that they produce law-abiding and productive citizens. For Your great mercy and Your protection we once again say, This is the day the Lord has made; P: Lord of Life, give hope and light where there is only darkness and despair. Heal and strengthen those who are ill and recovering. Comfort those who weep for loved ones now fallen asleep. 8 WORSHIP NOTES Where is the Benediction? Maundy Thursday begins the celebration of the holy three days of Christ s Passover, commonly known as the Triduum. Because the Triduum is seen as one service in three parts, no Benediction is spoken at the conclusion of the Maundy Thursday or Good Friday services. The Benediction spoken at the Easter Vigil service concludes all the services of the Triduum. In Matthew s Gospel we learn that after the Last Supper, the disciples and Jesus sang a hymn before going out to the Mount of Olives. The text indicated that the hymn was a hallel, probably one of the Egyptian Hallels (Psalm ), which were the concluding Psalms of the Passover liturgy. These psalms are sung in Christian liturgy during Easter and its season, as the Church celebrates her victory over death through the risen Christ. In keeping with the tradition of concluding the table fellowship with a Hallel, the liturgy concludes tonight with a psalm. The singing of this psalm as the altar is stripped serves as a double reminder for us that the first Lord s Supper anticipated the fullness of our salvation that was to be won the next day on the cross. We now prepare to witness the completion of our justification on Good Friday. THE LORD S SUPPER Lutherans believe the Lord s Supper is a participation in the real presence of Christ s true Body and Blood; a celebration of the oneness we receive in Christ and with one another in faith, life, practice and worship. Reception of the Sacrament by those not fully united with our confession implies a unity that does not exist. Therefore, while we cannot extend a general invitation to receive Holy Communion, we do urge others to join us in praying for the unity of the church in the confession of the true doctrine. Lutherans who are notmembers of Emmanuel who desire to receive Holy Communion are asked to speak with the Pastor before the service.
