The Baptism of Our Lord Holy Eucharist Rite II January 8, 2017, 9:15am St. Paul s Chapel Broadway and Fulton Street, New York City

Welcome to St. Paul s Chapel Please add your voice and heart to the prayers. Everyone is welcome at Jesus Table, and everyone s voice is needed to tell the Good News of God s love in Christ. Please help others find a place near you, and greet the person next to you as we prepare to worship together. If you would like to pray with someone confidentially, for yourself or others, go to the altar rail during communion time. About this Service Today we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord, which is commonly observed in the Episcopal church on the first Sunday following the Epiphany. It is one of the four holy days denoted as especially appropriate for baptisms, along with Easter Vigil, Pentecost, and the Feast of All Saints; therefore, on this day we welcome new Christians through the sacramental baptismal rite, and we are invited to renew our baptismal vows during the service. Sources: BCP; episcopalchurch.org The Entrance Rite Baptismal Acclamation BCP p. 299 At the sound of the bells, please stand as you are able. Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be God s kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. There is one Body and one Spirit; There is one hope in God s call to us; One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism; One God and Father of all. 2

Hymn in Procession Hymnal 128, vv. 1, 5 Words: John Henry Hopkins, Jr. ( ), alt.; Music: Three Kings of Orient, John Henry Hopkins, Jr. 3

The Collect of the Day BCP p. 214 All Please be seated. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. The Liturgy of the Word The First Reading Isaiah 42:1-9 GWMV p. 25 Reader A Reading from the Book of Isaiah. This is my servant, and I support him all the way. He s the one I chose and I am delighted with him. I have given him my spirit, says God. He will bring justice to everyone, but not by fighting. He is gentle but strong. He will not stop until everyone is treated fairly. God created the heavens and stretched them out, laid out the earth and everything on it, and gives breath to the people on the earth. Here s what God says: I am the LORD, I have called you from the goodness of my heart. I have taken you by the hand and I m holding you close to me. I have given you as a gift to everyone, everywhere, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind and those who live in darkness, to bring out the prisoners from the pit they ve been in. I am the LORD, that is my name. Everything that was supposed to happen has happened. Listen to me, because I m telling you that, from now on, we re doing something new. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 4

Gospel Acclamation LEVAS 221, v. 1 Please stand as you are able. Words: Traditional; Music: Spiritual; arr. Horace Clarence Boyer (b. 1935) 5

The Holy Gospel Matthew 3:13-17 GWMV p. 27 Deacon Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus came to John at the Jordan River to be baptized by him. John thought this was a ridiculous idea. He said, But Jesus, I should be baptized by you, not the other way around! Jesus said, Let s do this because that s what we should do to follow God s law. Well, okay then, said John. After Jesus was baptized, when he was coming up out of the water, suddenly the sky opened and he saw God s Spirit come down from the clouds like a dove and rest on him. Then a voice from heaven said, This is my own son whom I love very much, and who pleases me to no end. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon Silence follows the sermon. Deliver them, O Lord, from the way of sin and death. Lord, hear our prayer. Open their hearts to your grace and truth. Lord, hear our prayer. Fill them with your holy and life-giving Spirit. Lord, hear our prayer. Keep them in the faith and communion of your holy Church. Lord, hear our prayer. Teach them to love others in the power of the Spirit. Lord, hear our prayer. Send them into the world in witness to your love. Lord, hear our prayer. Bring them to the fullness of your peace and glory. Lord, hear our prayer. Grant, O Lord, that all who are baptized into the death of Jesus Christ your Son may live in the power of his resurrection and look for him to come again in glory; who lives and reigns now and for ever. Amen. Thanksgiving over the Water BCP p. 306 The blesses the water, first saying The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. 8

We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. At the following words, the touches the water. All Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. Please be seated. The Baptism BCP p. 307 Each Candidate is presented by name to the Assisting Priest, who then pours water upon the Candidate, saying Assisting Priest All N., I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Then the places a hand on the person s head, marking on the forehead the sign of the cross and saying to each one All N., you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ s own for ever. Amen. When this action has been completed for all Candidates, the prays over the Candidates, saying All Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon these your servants the forgiveness of sin, and have raised them to the new life of grace. Sustain them, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give them an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. Please stand as you are able. All Let us welcome the newly baptized. We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood. 9

The Peace The Holy Eucharist The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The greet one another in the name of the Lord. Welcome Please be seated. The Offertory Special music occurs during the collection of the offering. At the Presentation Hymnal 380, v. 3 Please stand as you are able as the offering is brought forward. Words: Thomas Ken ( ); Music: Old 100th, melody from Pseaumes octante trois de David, 1551, alt.; harm. after Louis Bourgeois (1510?-1561?) 10

The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer A, adapted BCP p. 361/381 All children are welcome to come to the altar. Sanctus The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, to give thanks to you at all times and in all places, loving and mighty God, Creator of heaven and earth. Because in Jesus Christ our Lord you have received us as your sons and daughters, made us citizens of your kingdom, and given us the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth. And so we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with everyone in heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Hymnal S130 11

Music: From Deutsche Messe, Franz Peter Schubert ( ); arr. Richard Proulx (b. 1937) All Holy and gracious God: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; when we had wandered far from you and fallen into sin, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, and to reconcile us to you through his perfect sacrifice. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Savior Jesus took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper, he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. 12

All We celebrate your loving mercy, O God, with praise and thanksgiving. Remembering how Jesus died, and rose again, and ascended to you in heaven, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the holy food and drink of new and unending life in your Son. Sanctify us also, that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and be strengthened to serve you together in peace. At the last day, bring us with all your saints into the never-ending joy of your kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. The Lord s Prayer BCP p. 364 All And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Fraction EOW p. 69 The breaks the consecrated Bread. We break this bread to share in the Body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The Gifts of God for the of God. All who hunger for God are cordially invited to this table, including children. You may consume the bread and then drink from the chalice (please grasp the bottom of the chalice to guide it to your lips). Also, you may dip the bread in the wine and then consume it, or you may leave the bread in your palm for the chalice-bearer to dip in the wine and place on your tongue. Gluten-free wafers are available. Those who do not wish to receive communion are welcome to receive a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest. If you would like to pray with someone confidentially, for yourself or others, go to the altar rail. 13
