The Fifth Sunday in Lent March 13, 2016, 9:15am Holy Eucharist Rite II St. Paul s Chapel For a World of Good Broadway and Fulton Street, New York City There in box of alabaster, bearing nard of fragrance pure, she with gift of outpoured sweetness bids the mystic sign endure: seeking from anointment healing, lo, the sick anoints the Cure! Dearly then for that dear offering did our Lord in love repay: since so perfect her devotion, all her sins he put away: made her be his own forerunner on his Resurrection day. Now be glory, laud and honor unto him the Paschal Host, who, in war with Death a Lion, as a Lamb gave up the ghost, and the third day rose a Victor crowned with spoils that Death had lost. ~ Philippe de Grève (ca )

Welcome to St Paul s Chapel Please add your voice and heart to the prayers. Everyone is welcome at Jesus Table, and everyone s voice is needed to tell the Good News of God s love in Christ. Please help others find a place near you, and greet the person next to you as we prepare to worship together. 2

The Fifth Sunday in Lent 9:15am The Holy Eucharist Rite II March 13, 2016 Opening Acclamation Order of Service At the sound of the bell, please stand as you are able. Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins. His mercy endures for ever. At the sound of the bell, the ministers will process in silence. A Ritual of Reconciliation Jesus said, The first commandment is this: Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is the only Lord. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these. Let us pray. Have mercy on us, O God, according to your never-ending love; According to your abundant mercy blot out our sins. For we know our transgressions, and our sin is ever before our eyes. Against you only have we sinned, and done what is evil in your sight. You desire truth in all our hearts; teach us your wisdom. Create in us a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within us. Do not cast us away from your presence, and do not take your Holy Spirit from us. Restore to us the joy of your salvation, and give us the spirit and will to do what is right. Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. 3

Kyrie Music: From Missa de Sancta Maria Magdalena, Healey Willan ( ). By permission of Oxford University Press. The Collect of the Day The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the swift and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. 4

The Liturgy of the Word The First Reading Isaiah 43:16-21 Please be seated. Reader A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah. God, who carved a path for us to walk through the sea, who saved us from the chariots and horses and all the warriors and armies, says this to us, Don t get stuck on the way things were. Don t rehearse them over and over again in your head. I am about to do something completely new. It s happening all around you. Can you see it? I am making roads in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. The animals who run wild will bow down to me even the ostriches and the coyotes. I give my people in the desert water to drink. They are people I formed for myself, so that I might hear their praise. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation Please stand as you are able. Wonder, Love, and Praise Hymnal 825 Words: Psalm 103 Music: Jacques Berthier ( ) The Holy Gospel John 12:1-8 Deacon Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Six days before the Passover, Jesus and his disciples were in Bethany, where Lazarus and his sisters lived. (Jesus had raised Lazarus from the dead, remember?) Martha put on a lovely dinner for them. After supper, Mary brought out some very expensive perfumed oil and 5

massaged Jesus feet with it. Then she wiped them dry with her hair. The whole house was full of the fragrance. Judas Iscariot, one of the disciples, the one who was going to betray Jesus to the authorities, ruined the moment by saying, I can t believe you didn t sell this perfume and give the money to the poor. It s not like Judas cared at all about the poor. He said that because he was a thief. He was the treasurer of the disciples and used to steal from the money they had set aside. Jesus said, Back off. Leave her alone. She honors me with this beautiful perfume and her care of me. She bought that perfume to prepare me for my burial. You always have the opportunity to help poor people. You won t always have me here with you in the flesh. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon The Rev. Dr. Mark Francisco Bozzuti-Jones Silence follows the sermon. The Nicene Creed Please stand as you are able. All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, 6

who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the Please stand as you are able. Reader Jesus, remember us when you come into your kingdom. Hear us as we pray: For your church around the world, we ask new life. Reader Reader Reader Reader Reader Reader Reader Reader For all who carry out ministries in your church, we ask grace and wisdom. For people who have accepted spiritual disciplines, we ask inspired discipleship. For Christians of every land, we ask new unity in your name. For Jews and Muslims and people of other faiths, we ask your divine blessing. For those who cannot believe, we ask your faithful love. For governors and rulers in every land, we ask your guidance. For people who suffer and sorrow, we ask your healing peace. For family, friends, and those who are no longer with us, we ask that your loving arms embrace them. After a brief silence, the leader concludes the prayers, saying: All Holy God, your Word, Jesus Christ, spoke peace to a sinful world and brought humanity the gift of reconciliation by the suffering and death he endured. Teach us who bear his name to follow the example he gave us. May our faith, hope, and charity turn hatred to love, conflict to peace, and death to eternal life; through Christ our Lord. Amen. 7

The Peace The Holy Eucharist The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The people greet one another in the name of the Lord. Please be seated. Welcome Special Music At the Presentation Please stand as you are able as the offering is brought forward. Hymnal 380 Words: Isaac Watts ( ), para. of Psalm 117. St. 3, Thomas Ken ( ) Music: Old 100th, melody from Pseaumes octante trois de David, 1551, alt.; harm. after Louis Bourgeois (1510?-1561?) 8

The Great Thanksgiving Sanctus The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is truly right, and good and joyful, to give you thanks, all-holy God. We find new life in you, fountain of hope and well of forgiveness. You seek us out and change our hearts of stone to hearts that love you and all you have made. Joining with the angels, who sing your praises night and day, we give voice to every creature under heaven as we proclaim with joy: Music: Grayson Warren Brown (b. 1948) A Mass for a Soulful, 1979 North American Liturgy Resources, N. 23rd Ave., Phoenix, AZ All Rights Reserved. Please stand or kneel as you are able. 9

All Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all. On the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await his coming in glory. Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and forever. Amen. All And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen Fraction The breaks the bread. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. The Gifts of God for the of God. All who hunger for God are cordially invited to this table, including children. You may consume the bread and then drink from the chalice (please grasp the bottom of the chalice to guide it to your lips). Also, you may dip the bread in the wine and then consume it, or you may leave the bread in your palm for the chalice-bearer to dip in the wine and place on your tongue. Gluten-free wafers are available; please indicate to the priest that you require this alternative. Those who do not wish to receive communion are welcome to come forward for a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest. The ushers will guide you. 10

Concluding Rite The Post-Communion Prayer Please stand as you are able. All Let us pray. God of abundance, you have fed us with the bread of life and cup of salvation; you have united us with Christ and one another; and you have made us one with all your people in heaven and on earth. Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit, that we may proclaim your redeeming love to the world and continue for ever in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen. The Prayer over the Deacon Bow down before the Lord. Please bow or kneel as you are able. Look with compassion, O Lord, upon this your people; that, rightly observing this holy season, they may learn to know you more fully, and to serve you with a more perfect will; through Christ our Lord. Amen. 11

Closing Hymn Please stand as you are able. Hymnal 344 Words: Att. to John Fawcett (1739/ ) Music: Sicilian Mariners, Sicilian melody; first published The European Magazine and London Review, 1792, alt. The Dismissal Deacon Let us go forth in the name of Christ. Thanks be to God. 12
