5 From the Director of Parish Ministries & Religious Education Thank you all for your prayers and support as our seven First Communicants came to the table of the Lord for the first time last Sunday at the 10 a.m. Mass! Your continued prayers for them are most welcomed. Registration information for the school year is currently underway. If you have a child that was not registered in the program and will need to be, please call the Religious Education Office to setup a time to register. A copy of your child s/ren baptismal certificate will be needed if that Sacrament took place at another parish. Registration information can also be found on the parish website under Religious Education as well as on the brochure rack outside of Church and in the parish office. Need Your Input! Below are a few questions for all to think about as I look to expand further our parish ministries. Please feel free to , phone, or send a note with your response. #1. Are you interested in a parish book club? This club would meet monthly and would include a book discussion as well as some light snacks? Daytime meeting or evening? #2. Is there a need to offer a parish grief support group? Grief exists in many different ways. From the death of a family member, to the loss of a job, to the loss of friendship, grief exists all around us. Would you be interested in a seven week session? #3. What topics for future adult education would be of interest to you? #4. Would there be any interest in starting a ministry that makes prayer blankets for those in need? All Tuesdays during May facilitated by Vince Zaprzal, Director of Parish Ministries and Religious Education! Two weekly sessions offered! 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Both sessions will take place in Classroom 8 of our Religious Education Wing. Please use the Religious Education Entrance. 6 Around the Diocese and Parish Neighborhood HELPING WHERE WE CAN Another week of Loose Change cups arriving for us has brought your Lenten Alms donations to a total of over $3,700 which greatly assists our work to aid those in need in our community. Again we thank all of you for your generous support. These funds allow us to help others meet their housing and modest furnishing costs, to assist with utility, gasoline, and food expenses, and occasionally to cover small medical and pharmacy charges. Since no two individuals requesting our help are alike, we try to assist every individual and family as best we can. If our SVDP Conference cannot fully cover a need, we seek the help of other Conferences, social service organizations, and other charities to join us to meet that necessity. Very often those in need themselves come up with a major portion of the aid required. Most also realize your help provided through us is key to resolving their support problems. For that they, too, often express thanks and prayers of gratitude. Two of our Members have been devoting much of their time to locating and providing job lists throughout DuPage County for those of our clients in need of employment and earnings to support themselves and their basic needs. In fact these two Members have been providing us every week with so many job openings that we now have decided to share these with everyone in the area that may now be seeking a job or second income to support their needs. We have employment opportunities ranging from County attorneys and judges, tradesmen, hotel staff, watchmen, accountants, administrative aides, social workers, factory and manufacturing workers, care givers, drivers, and many more. If you are interested in any of these jobs or to run through some of the many job lists we get almost daily, please call us at our parish office at Finally, please consider joining our work here at Ascension to help us help others. This coming Tuesday, May 1, at 4:00 PM in the parish Office Conference Room we will have our monthly meeting to coordinate and plan our future work. It is an opportunity for you to learn more about our Society and what role you might be able to play in it. Please consider joining with us in that endeavor. HARMONY, HOPE & HEALING will host their Annual Heart Beat Celebration fundraiser in honor of their 15th year serving children and adults who have felt the traumatic effects of homelessness, incarceration, addiction and isolation. In partnership with ten social service agencies including homeless shelters, residential programs, community centers and the Cook County jail, HHH provides on-site music programs and community engagement opportunities that support participants as they strive to become independent, self-sufficient contributing members of society. Harmony, Hope & Healing served nearly 900 participants and provided 1,000 hours of music programming and performance this past year. This year s Heart Beat Celebration will feature music by the Harmony, Hope & Healing ensemble and friend, including opera and choral stars Alfreda Burke and Rodrick Dixon, from 12:30-3:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 29 at Galleria Marchetti (825 W. WAR, International provides safe houses for at-risk women throughout the world (including the United States). The International Labor Organization estimates that there are 20.9 million victims of human trafficking globally, with hundreds of thousands in the United States. Human trafficking victims have been identified in cities, suburbs, and rural areas in all 50 states, and in Washington, D.C. Did you know that 15,500 children are trafficked into the United States each year? Did you know that the Super Bowl is the most highly trafficked event in the country? Did you know that children as young as four years old, as well as teens, are often kidnapped, moved to another country and trafficked? Following a presentation on human trafficking, we will be able to shop the WAR Boutique, featuring jewelry, scarves, stationary, home décor and much more, all created by women around the world rescued from human trafficking.
