We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

2 Pastor s Corner: Today we celebrate the feast of the Most Holy Trinity. Our God is an infinite mystery and never to be contained, or comprehended, no matter how much time and energy we exert in our pursuit; no matter how many creative and poetic images we use. It is a waste of our time to try to figure out how three goes into one. While we are not able to sum up our understanding of the Trinity, still, we can enter in and experience the relationship we have with our triune God. We learn through our experience who our God is. The Scriptures guide and nourish that relationship which we are constantly discovering anew. They help us know about our God and God s will for humanity, indeed for all creation. So, we turn to the word of God for insight and power to guide us, we who are made in God s image and likeness. I find the first reading from Deuteronomy irresistible. Today s text is called a high point of the whole book. In it our Jewish ancestors remind us that we have seen the face of God revealed through God s powerful deeds. Deuteronomy is the last of the five books of the Pentateuch. The name means "second law." It is a law book and its purpose is to regulate life by law. Deuteronomy captures the message of the prophets and directs the faithful to do as God does care for widows, orphans and strangers in the land. The book of Deuteronomy will lay out a plan for their behavior, how to acknowledge and act according to the will of their loving God. Once again the disciples are with Jesus on a mountain. They are back in Galilee where it all began for them, the call by Jesus to follow him. But a lot has happened since they accepted his invitation. Things hadn t turned out the way they expected. The last time Peter, James and John were on a mountain with Jesus, he was transfigured before them. They were excited by what they experienced, but Jesus hinted to them about his coming death and resurrection. Of course, they didn t understand what he meant. Now all the disciples are with Jesus on another mountain, all, that is, except Judas. A lot has happened since the Transfiguration. They traveled with Jesus to Jerusalem and watched him get rejected by the religious authorities and killed by the Romans. Could things have gotten any worse? Even one of his intimates betrayed him to a torturous death? But the story didn t end there. Jesus was resurrected from the dead. Today s selection from Matthew closes his gospel. On the mount of Transfiguration Jesus touched his disciples and told them, "Do not be afraid." The gospel closes with Jesus consecrating the disciples to go out into the very world that rejected and killed him, preach the Gospel and baptize people "in the name of Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." Jesus also promises to be with them, "always until the end of time." They need not fear because Jesus, who has been given "all power in heaven and on earth" will be with them. We are disciples of Jesus. So, the power Jesus had for those whom he first commissioned, he also has for us. Through all the stages of our lives, from childhood into adulthood and then into old age, we are called to witness to the new life Jesus has given us and to trust that, at each stage, as we face new and unique challenges to our faith, Jesus words are true and reliable, "I am with you always until the end of the age." Jesus remains with us in his Spirit, the personal representative of Christ, who makes him present to each of us in every age. God has chosen to be intimately involved in our world. What we see and experience of God here on earth, through the Spirit, is the same God who is "in heaven." As we entered church today, hopefully we dipped our fingers into the holy water and signed ourselves with the sign of the cross. That water reminds us we were baptized into the life, death and resurrection of Christ. The words and gesture also remind us that we are recommitting ourselves to live what we profess: we are made in the image and likeness of God and are committed agents of our loving God in all we do, dying to self, so that through us, God s love will be evident to everyone. On this feast of the Most Blessed Trinity we must be modest in our claim of human knowledge about God. God is mystery. Still we try to give our best expression, through words and symbols, about who our God is and how God has been made known to us. To know God as Father/Creator means we keep our eyes open to see God s power and wisdom towards all creatures. This is the God in whom we live, and move and have our being. We profess faith in the Son, the mystery of God-with-us in Jesus Christ. We identify closely with his life, words, attitudes and actions. We participate in his dying and rising through our baptism. Through the Son we experience an intimate relationship with God and we come to know God-with-us always. We are servants called to serve one another by the Christ we have heard and are called to imitate. We profess faith in the Spirit, who stirs the divine life of Christ within us. Through the Spirit we come to perceive and experience the grace-filled works of our God and we are moved to respond. The Spirit raises our spirits above fear and hesitancy and energizes us to do what Jesus tells us to do in today s gospel, "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you." Proper Summer Attire: I believe that we all have to be aware of the attire we don for Mass during the summer months. I know the first response to my comments will be: God does not care how I dress for Mass. There might be some truth in that statement there is also some notions that are not true. First of all, everyone should be dressed modestly male and females. Items that are not considered appropriate attire for mass include (but are not limited to): tank tops, halter tops, shorts that are too short and similar beach wear. Think about this: If you dress better for a date; to go out to dinner; to go to the movies; to go to an important meeting; for a job interview; to go to a concert; or on vacation then you are implying that all those things are more important to you than God is. If you can dress better and classier for some other activity or venue, then your actions/appearance speak louder than words. God does deserve our respect as well as our love! Bear in mind what Sir Winston Churchill said in the 1920 s dresses should be long enough to cover the subject, yet short enough to keep one s interest! Prayerful Atmosphere: I ask for your sincere cooperation in maintaining a prayerful atmosphere in church. People who come to pray and to spend some time with the Lord are not given the opportunity to do this when conversations and telephone calls and photo exchanges are taking place. Many times it is difficult for me to concentrate on a person s confession because of the distraction coming from the church! Please remember what the Lord has told us: BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD. Psalm 46:10. I know that no one is intentionally trying to disturb others, but when one conversation leads to another there is hardly a difference between our church and any other secular gathering of people. If you can t think of anything to pray for.please pray for me and for my brother priests. To say the least, this is not the easiest time in history to be a priest!

6 TAKE FIVE FOR FAITH Monday, May 28, Be happy! How happy is our sacrament of water! This enthusiastic appraisal of Baptism comes from church Father Tertullian around 203 A.D. The first epistle attributed to Saint Peter certainly agrees. It is sometimes described as a homily delivered to cheer on a first-century baptismal class graduating to full Christian initiation. It includes a hymn of thanksgiving, encouragement for holy living, instructions for the Christian household, urging to persevere in hard times, and the duties of members to the community as a whole. Take time to read 1 Peter this week, and give thanks for the happy sacrament. TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Peter 1:3-9; Mark 10:17-27 (347). Although you have not seen him, you love him... for you are receiving the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. Tuesday, May 29, In praise of mission There was a time when mission work was about saving the heathen and converting the pagans. Contemporary Catholic missionary work has undergone profound change since the Second Vatican Council, and today those in mission work are much more conscious of issues of social justice and the dangers of cultural imperialism in the guise of religious conversion. Many modern missioners speak of reverse mission of being converted by the generosity and wisdom of those they serve, who may be poor in material goods but rich in spirit and tradition. Invite a returned missioner to your parish or faith community to share his or her stories. It can be an eye-opening experience. TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Peter 1:10-16; Mark 10:28-31 (348). There is no one who has given up... lands for my sake and for the sake of the gospel who will not receive a hundred times more. Wednesday, May 30, What do you see? When the light is right, usually around dusk, the glass on a train acts as both a window and a mirror. Depending upon where you focus your eyes as a passenger, you can see either the relatively motionless interior of the car or the scenery outside passing by in a blur. This double vision reflects the duality of time and your human experience. There is the unchanging, eternal now where God resides and the rush of encounters and experiences in which you usually live. Just as passengers on the train can choose which side of the window to observe, you also have that same choice in your daily life. Where will you focus your attention today? TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Peter 1:18-25; Mark 10:32-45 (349). The grass withers, and the flower wilts, but the word of the Lord remains forever. Thursday, May 31, FEAST OF THE VISITATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY -- You visited me Where is the presence of God? In celebration of the Eucharist, certainly, in the transformed bread and wine, the word proclaimed and preached, the people gathered. When we pray, yes, God is there, too. And each of us bears the image of God, our creator, so we can see God in another, even in the hungry, thirsty, sick, naked, imprisoned, and stranger. In all of creation we can see the traces of God s intricate handiwork. Today we recall the story of the pregnant Mary s visit to her cousin Elizabeth, who was expecting John the Baptist. It is through the presence of Jesus in Mary that we have our faith. Remember Mary, who visits us with the presence of God. TODAY'S READINGS: Zephaniah 3:14-18a or Romans 12:9-16; Luke 1:39-56 (572). The king of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst. Friday, Jun 01, MEMORIAL OF JUSTIN, MARTYR -- Life lessons There are three kinds of people, wrote Blaise Pascal, the famous religious philosopher: Those who have sought God and found him... these are reasonable and happy. Those who seek God and have not yet found him... these are reasonable and unhappy. And those who neither seek God nor find him... these are unreasonable and unhappy. Justin Martyr appealed to reason, trying to persuade Roman rulers that it was pointless to persecute early Christians. He kept stressing the lessons of Jesus, most notably: Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you. Which of Jesus lessons do you quote the most? TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Peter 4:7-13; Mark 11:11-26 (351). Therefore I tell you, all that you ask for in prayer, believe that you will receive it and it shall be yours. Saturday, Jun 02, MEMORIAL OF MARCELLINUS AND PETER, MARTYRS -- Gone but not forgotten We hardly know the names of Marcellinus and Peter from the early fourth century (d.304), who were persecuted during the reign of the Roman emperor Diocletian. But in their day, these men were honored by poems and feast days, and over their tombs a church was built. Their bones were prized relics as late as the ninth century and miracles were attributed to them. The gift of our lives is the greatest gift we can offer to God. Though our names may be all but forgotten on earth, our fidelity is eternally rewarded. TODAY'S READINGS: Jude 17, 20b-25; Mark 11:27-33 (352). Was John's Baptism of heavenly or of human origin? Answer me." 2018 TrueQuest Communications. TakeFiveForFaith.com; mail@takefiveforfaith.com. All rights reserved.
