2 A MESSAGE FROM FR. TRUC Beat his breast and prayed, O God, be merciful to me a sinner (Lk. 18). We are approximately $8,158 short of our $28,412 Goal for We are beating our breasts seeking for your support even if you have already fulfilled your pledge. Please Help! Dear Parishioners and Visitors: Together in Mission is in need of your prayers and financial support; we are two months away from this year s end, but we are still short of our 2013 goal of $28,412 dollars; early in January, Bishop Gomez wrote: Your contributions to Together in Mission provide essential resources to parishes and schools that are most in need in our great Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Through your generosity to this collection, you bear witness to our most disadvantaged neighbors that our Christian love never fails. This past June, I personally sent you a letter stating the dilemma that we are facing with the shortfall of our parish TIM 2013 commitment; some of you have responded generously to my appeal, and for this I am very grateful. Unfortunately, as a parish we are still below our goal; this Sunday at the 10AM and 12PM Sunday masses, I have invited Ms. Yolanda Brown, a pastoral life director from Blessed Sacrament church in Hollywood; Ms. Brown will be sharing with you her experiences as a recipient of TIM funds, both at Delores Mission and Blessed Sacrament church. She is not able to speak at the other two masses (Sat. 5pm & Sun. 8am) because of other prior commitments. I hope that those of you who read this message could help us to overcome this shortfall of our 2013 TIM commitment. There is no amount that is too small; every bit of your generosity would help achieve our goal and assist the people of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The Battle of Prayer - Catechism of Catholic Church (CCC.) # Last Sunday I shared with our parishioners in my homily on the relationship between prayer and faith; the labor of faith is prayer; without prayer faith loses and eventually dies. Since prayers require a lot of self-discipline and personal effort, we would have moments of struggles and obstacles that would prevent us from praying; the Catechism calls this struggle as the Battle of Prayer. In summary, I gave four words that begin with letter D signifying our battle or struggles in prayer: distraction, dryness, doubt of faith, and demanding of God. 1. Distractions (CCC ) Distractions in prayer are an habitual difficulty. The secret is to turn our heart away from their causes (our attachments). We must have a preferential love for the Lord. This leads us to a purified heart and a choice to serve the right master. 2. Dryness in Prayer (2731) The problem of dryness belongs to contemplative prayer when the person has no taste for thoughts and feelings even spiritual ones. In this moment of sheer faith the person must cling to Jesus. If this dryness comes from "lack of roots," the battle requires a conversion. 3. Doubt or Lack of Faith (2732) The most common temptation is a lack of faith which comes from the thousand cares which vie for priority in our life. What is our real love? Do we really believe in the Lord? Do we really believe his words? "Apart from me, you can do nothing." 4. Demanding - Not Being Heard ( ) We don't worry if our prayers are acceptable to God, but we demand to see results from our petitions. Is God just an instrument to be used? We must be convinced that "We do not know how to pray as we ought" (Rom 8:26). The Father knows what we need and (respecting the dignity of our human freedom) he gives us the Spirit to ask for what he wants. May your week ahead be filled with love and laughter. I encourage you to be informed through reading, be interested in your faith through prayers, and be involved in the different ministries of our parish. 3 GOD'S LOGIC IS NOT OURS Nobody will ever mistake the Bible for a logic textbook. We need to remember this when we approach today's readings. How can a God who knows no favorites have a chosen people, or give us the disciplines of fasting and almsgiving and then instruct us not to talk about them? God, in love and tenderness, knows how quickly we can get "into a rut." The Spirit inspires passages like the instruction from Sirach and the parable in Luke to help drag us out of the rut of thinking that God's ways are our ways. Sirach poetically uses contrast to answer the question, "Whose prayer will reach the lofty clouds of heaven?" The answer? Those who are lowly on earth. Jesus amplifies this in his parable of the Pharisee and the publican. It is Spirit-inspired illogic that communicates today's message: God hears the voices of WORSHIP, LITURGY & FAITH those who are ignored by the rest of the world. J. S. Paluch Co. Treasures From Our Tradition Friday's Solemnity of All Saints and Saturday's Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed fit well at the beginning of November. The liturgical readings of this final month in the Church year are keyed to the end of time and the fulfillment of Jesus' saving acts. Nowhere is this more fully celebrated than in Mexico, where November 2 is the "Day of the Dead." Missionaries moved an ancient Aztec festival from midsummer to November, linking the festival to Christian themes. Today, it is a time for remembering the dead and celebrating the continuity of life, principally by festive picnics in cemeteries. There are special foods and games, and people socialize with other families and tell favorite stories about their dear ones. The sweetness of life is honored by sugary desserts and treats. Flowers, music, lights, and feasting assure that the day is not at all morbid. Traditionally, the day begins with Mass, a procession to the cemetery, and a morning feast. Most families have a special dinner with the pan de muerto, or "bread of the dead." A toy skeleton is baked into the loaf, and the one who bites into it is considered lucky indeed. The dead are not feared, but deeply loved, and this joyful family feast points both to age-old customs and Resurrection faith. J. S. Paluch Co. Raul Macias, Camilo Espinoza, Lut Tizon, Fr. The recent earthquake in the Philippines has caused untold suffering the greatest of which, we know, was the loss of life. But the living still need our help and parishes are encouraged to do what they can to alleviate the suffering and pain in the aftermath of the earthquake. If you would like to help in some way the Archdiocese is recommending a special collection that can be sent directly to Catholic Relief Services. Visit Again, this is not being mandated by the Archdiocese but your generosity and charity at this time would be deeply appreciated, especially by the people of the Philippines.,
