Separating babies from their mothers is not the answer and is immoral." Statement from Daniel Cardinal DiNardo President, United State Conference of Catholic Bishops June 13, 2018 Fort Lauderdale, FL "At its core, asylum is an instrument to preserve the right to life. The Attorney General's recent decision elicits deep concern because it potentially strips asylum from many women who lack adequate protection. These vulnerable women will now face return to the extreme dangers of domestic violence in their home country. This decision negates decades of precedents that have provided protection to women fleeing domestic violence. Unless overturned, the decision will erode the capacity of asylum to save lives, particularly in cases that involve asylum seekers who are persecuted by private actors. We urge courts and policy makers to respect and enhance, not erode, the potential of our asylum system to preserve and protect the right to life. Additionally, I join Bishop Joe Vásquez, Chairman of USCCB's Committee on Migration, in condemning the continued use of family separation at the U.S./ Mexico border as an implementation of the Administration's zero tolerance policy. Our government has the discretion in our laws to ensure that young children are not separated from their parents and exposed to irreparable harm and trauma. Families are the foundational element of our society and they must be able to stay together. While protecting our borders is important, we can and must do better as a government, and as a society, to find other ways to ensure that safety. Separating babies from their mothers is not the answer and is immoral."

We are hundreds of miles from the border, yet what has happened along the US-Mexico border over the past few weeks has a direct impact on many of our own people. Images of crying children, separated from their mothers, and the anguish of mothers whose infants have been taken from their arms has increased the anxiety and fear of mothers and children living here in many of our parishes and neighborhoods. I write to assure you that we stand with you, that we support Church efforts to keep families together and to reunite those that have been separated. The separation of detained minor children from their parents is un-american, un- Christian and inhumane. This practice is mean-spirited and betrays our nation s tradition of welcome to migrants and refugees. Coupled with this, the United State s Attorney General s decision to deny welcome to victims of domestic and gang violence is a further betrayal of the values that have until now characterized the immigration policy of the United States. The Attorney General s attempt to justify these actions by citing Saint Paul s Letter to the Romans is a final betrayal of millennia-old principles. Blind obedience to the state has never been the mark of our democracy, which has historically been characterized by civil discourse and compromise. Indeed, early Christians were often at odds with secular society and the government. When questioned about allegiance to the Roman Empire, Jesus instructed his followers to Render to Caesar what is Caesar s, but to God, the things that are God s (Matthew 22:21). As the Christian message began to take hold, early communities of believers found themselves in deep conflict with the Roman government. Thus, it is a perversion of Scripture to teach that God s people must blindly obey the government, even when the government is enacting unjust laws. We believe that the Department of Homeland Security s barbaric practice of separating children from their parents is void of justice, charity and compassion. This policy must be vigorously opposed. As Saint Augustine taught, An unjust law is no law at all. We cannot lose what is at the heart of this tragedy: the fact there are children and families in the crosshairs of our government s actions and that the trauma that these children suffer will have long term effects on their spiritual, emotional and physical well-being. We encourage Congress to fix our broken immigration system, to honor promises made to children who were brought to the United States ( DACA recipients ), and to include the good of families in their deliberations. In closing, let us all remember the words addressed to the Israelites on their desert journey: You shall not oppress a resident alien; you well know how it feels to be an alien, since you were once aliens yourselves in the land of Egypt (Exodus 23:9). And let us treat with compassion those who today knock on the doors of our hearts. + Patrick J. McGrath Bishop of San Jose

Thank you to all who helped make VBS a success! Our 24 campers had a great time learning stories, eating snacks, playing games, making crafts, and singing songs! Thank you especially to Angela Weisbrich (and kids!) for leading our kids in crafts and helping with much of the set up and clean up, Joe Yakawich (SFX youth minister) and his son Matt for corralling the kids in games, and our kitchen snack preparers Trent Smith, Joan Dodge, Helen Jakober, and Connie Pribyl. Thanks you also to those who came in to help with registration each morning, those who helped keep volunteers and kids fed all week by donating food, or shared supplies needed for props and decorations. Most of all, our youth group needs to get a huge thank you. Our high school youth wrote, produced, and performed a skit for opening and closing each day as well as for the program. Taylor took charge of the kitchen and Isabel taught all the songs and motions. Renee and Alexis were integral in helping with the storytelling and games rotations. Thank you also to our middle school youth (Ryan, Rhianna, Gillian and Maria) for helping with music and the pre-school group a small but powerful force at VBS. Graduated campers Sienna, Cole, and Josie came back to help this year. Sienna even brought her friend Jorja to help. Ryan and Sean (aspiring youth group member) helped paint a lot of cardboard and stuff grocery sacks for props. Thank you also to the Knights for flipping burgers for the Thursday evening program, Cathy Marshall for buying supplies and running the kitchen, and all those who attended the program. As you can see, the work of many is involved in a single week of VBS. Thank you for helping plant seeds in our 24 campers and allowing the opportunity for our 13 youth helpers to begin learning to take on the task of discipleship. The hard work of preparing soil and planting seeds is necessary if there will be a harvest. Legendary Lodge Please keep Alexis and Taylor in your prayers this week as they attend Leadership Camp at Legendary Lodge. Remember the counselors, staff, and youth ministers who will be there in support of our high school youth as they discern leadership for the coming year and grow in discipleship. Thank you for your support of our youth! Youth Group All youth grades 6-12 are welcome to youth group. Our gatherings combine fun, prayer, and learning. Please check your and vote for movie choices. Meeting dates: Wed. July 18, 6-8:30 pm, movie TBA Wed. Aug. 1, 6-8:30 pm, movie TBA Remember friends are welcome for movie night. Also, dinner and beverages are provided, so please RSVP.

Blessed Trinity Catholic Community+Spirit of Christ Mission Prayer on the FOURTH of July F ather, creator of all that is we do well to praise you always and everywhere. You made woman and man in your own image and set them over all creation. Once you chose a people and gave them a destiny and, when you brought them out of bondage to freedom, they carried with them the promise that all people could be blessed and all people, in every place, could be free. What the prophets pledged was fulfilled in Jesus Christ, your Son and our saving Lord. It has come to pass in every generation, in every land. It happened to our ancestors, who came to this land as immigrants out of the desert into a place of promise and hope. It happens to us still, in our time, as you lead all people through your Church to the blessed vision of peace through the struggle for justice and the work of forgiveness. And so, with hearts full of love help us to continue a good work begun long ago. Make our vision clear and our will strong: that only in human solidarity will we find liberty, and justice only in the honor that belongs to every life on earth. Turn our hearts to the family of nations: to understand the ways of others, to offer friendship, and to find safety only in the common good of all. We ask this through Christ our Lord. AMEN Adapted from Preface for Thanksgiving Day; and Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers, Prayer for July 4, 1988 United States Catholic Conference. God of our wandering ancestors, long have we known that your heart is with the refugee. Their cry resounds through the ages: Will you let me in? Give us hearts that break open when our sisters and brothers, their children and infants, turn to us with that same cry. May they find a friend in us as we gaze into their longing eyes and see your hopeful face.

SUMMER FEAST DAYS. SOLEMN FEAST OF SAINTS PETER AND PAUL FRIDAY, June 29 Mass at 12:10 O ne of the oldest saints days in Rome, June 29 was dedicated to the memory of the apostles Peter and Paul as early as the fourth century. This day the church remembers two disciples who differed greatly in style and background, but who shared a tireless energy in spreading the gospel. Rough-hewn and impulsive Peter left his fishing nets immediately to answer Jesus call. Later, during the passion of Jesus, Peter made his denials just as impulsively, though he had pledged his loyalty to Jesus only that evening. Receiving Christ s gracious forgiveness after the resurrection, Peter went on to become the rock-steady and faithful leader of the disciples. Imprisoned three or four times, he eventually was crucified during the reign of Nero. Legend has it that he was hung on the cross head down because he told the soldiers that he was not worthy to die in the same manner as Christ. Once Paul, who had been a rigid and violent persecutor of Christians, experienced the love of Christ, he grew meek though never shy. He founded many churches and was able to affirm the fledgling communities of believers even while he was admonishing them. Paul s writings are the first Christian scriptures; they are older than the gospels. After many imprisonments, Paul was executed during the reign of Nero. Since he was a Roman citizen, he was beheaded instead of crucified. Coastal countries like Chile and Paraguay remember Peter the fisherman with nautical parades. In Hungary and in rural England, people braid straw from the wheat harvest into crosses and crowns to honor the two martyr saints. Feast of Saint Thomas the Apostle, Tuesday July 3. Mass at 12:10 Thomas is among the Apostles who provided a foundation for God s household, the Church. We sometimes sense that he was a man who liked to believe the worst so that he would not be disappointed. But he was also an apostle who wanted to see the wounds of faithfulness and genuine service. Known as the doubter he looked for proof that what was said was true. A good saint to remember as we celebrate freedom and independence.

On July 1, we will take up the Peter s Pence Collection, which provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world. The proceeds benefit our brothers and sisters on the margins of society, including victims of war, oppression, and disasters. Please be generous. For more information, visit GLASS RECYCLING We are projected to begin our participation in recycling glass, a project of Missoula Interfaith Collaborative by mid-july. We have settled on a location of the bins on our property and have purchased a storage unit. The cost of our participation will be $200/month. In the next two weeks, we must be assured that this cost can be covered by the donations of those who will be using this service. Therefore, we are asking for a down payment to cover our first month of participation. Parishioners are welcome to make this down payment by writing a check to the parish with the notation Recycling in the memo area or by enclosing cash in an envelope with your name on it. Remember, this does not replace your regular Sunday/monthly contributions!! We must receive this down payment by July 15 in order to proceed with a commitment to have collection bins delivered to us. The down payment will allow you to bring glass for recycling once we start the service. Recycling glass contributes to the good of all by: Resolving a much-needed niche for re-using glass. Providing additional income to MIC. Helping employees learning job skills and/or acquiring experience for building a resumé. Making an investment in caring for our environment. I am so blessed to be part of this loving parish family! Thank you for all your cards, well wishes, prayers, and visits when I had my total knee replacement (and not a lobotomy as one of you teased). Special thanks to Fr. Ed and Sister Mary Jo, Gary Weisbrich who brought Holy Communion in the hospital, and Carol Kraft, Caroline Pickolick, and Cheryl Russell who babysat the office for me. With love and thanksgiving for you all, Carol
