In a way, today s feast is the high point of the Christmas season. In the story of Jesus baptism, we hear the report of a significant moment in Jesus life. By accepting baptism from John the Baptist, Jesus shows himself to accept solidarity with sinners. In the voice from heaven and the descent of the Holy Spirit, we know that God received this offering from Jesus and found it pleasing. In today s Gospel, as in the other Gospel accounts of Jesus baptism, we hear John the Baptist address the confusion of the people who thought that John might be the Messiah. In response, John contrasts the baptism that he performs with the Baptism that Jesus will inaugurate. John the Baptist says that he has baptized with water, but that someone will come and baptize with the Holy Spirit. The type of baptism that John performed was not yet a Christian Baptism; it was a preparation for Christian Baptism through which WEEKLY STEWARDSHIP REPORT DECEMBER 27, 2015 Goal $12, st Collection $8, Direct Deposit $ Online Giving $ Variance <$3,059.58> sins are forgiven and the gift of the Holy Spirit is received. In Luke s Gospel, all three members of the Trinity are manifested here: God the Father in the voice, the Holy Spirit descending, and Jesus the Son. At the beginning of his Gospel, Luke is communicating to us important information about the identity of Jesus. As the Christmas season comes to an end, we are now faced with a choice. We can forget about all these things and go back to business as usual, or we can take them seriously and do our best to live new lives. We need to continue the work of Jesus in the world we live in. We need to work to build the Kingdom of God in the world we live in. There is plenty of work for us to do. Perhaps this is the time for you to take a deep breath, summon your courage and step forward to become more involved in our community of faith. If you do, your life will certainly never be the same. Have a good week! Peace, Fr. Chris Our collection for the Solemnity of Mary was $1, Thank you for your continued generosity! Just a reminder to check all parish activities, go to our website at Click on the CALENDAR link, and you will find where it is being held and the times. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Merry Christmas! Share that cheerful greeting with some folks today. They may wonder if you have had any Elvis sightings lately, attended Star Trek conventions, or were Cleopatra in a previous lifetime. Despite the skeptics, today is solidly within the Christmas season. In fact, in some strands of the Christian tradition it represents the clearest manifestation of the mystery of the Incarnation. On Christmas Day, for example, the Gospel reading is the Prologue of John s Gospel, which reveals the glory of Christ shining through our humanity precisely in his baptism. At any rate, this is an ancient feast, celebrated first in Egypt sixteen centuries ago. More than most other ancient people, the Egyptians understood the life giving properties of water. On this day, they drew water from the Nile, so central in the history of their people, and reserved it in honor. Many other places copied the custom, so that St. John Chrysostom wrote of people in Antioch gathering at midnight to collect flowing water into vessels they brought from home since today there is a blessing on the water. At home for dinner tonight, decorate the table with beautiful bowls of water and white candles, toast one another with goblets of sparkling water, and light a Christmas candle in the window one last time. January 10, 2016 Feast of the Baptism of the Lord Fittingly, this Jubilee Year of Mercy is also the Lectionary s Year of Luke, for Luke s Gospel highlights God s mercy in finding the lost, healing the sick, restoring the broken, comforting the sorrowful, forgiving the sinner through Jesus ministry. But before doing, Luke s Jesus is always praying. As practical moderns programmed to measure worth by productivity, we instinctively Jubilee Year of Mercy appreciate the Jubilee s call to embrace the practical challenges of our baptism. But today Luke focuses not on Jesus being baptized, but on Jesus praying after baptism. So must we pray to become the disciples we are called to be, that the Spirit empower us to do what disciples are called to do. Imitating Jesus openness to the Spirit will enable us to cooperate with the grace that transforms us into beloved sons [and daughters]... in whom the Father is well pleased, living out, in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the extraordinary potential of our baptism. Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time for infant Baptism, weddings, when asked to be a Baptismal or Confirmation Sponsor and even funerals. We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and Confirmation Sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active and contributing member. So, are you a registered parishioner? If not, please consider registering.
