Redeemer Lutheran Church th Avenue SE Rochester, MN Redeemer Lutheran Church Making Him Known But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8 The Third Sunday In Lent Saturday, March 7, :30 pm Sunday, March 8, :00 am Our Mission Statement: As Christians based on the solid foundation of God s Word, empowered by the Holy Spirit we strive to live out, lift up, and share our faith in Jesus Christ welcoming all into our family of believers. Our Theme: Each month this year we are considering how different Biblical characters made our Lord known in unique ways. In March, we highlight Gideon: Making Him Known even when our faith is challenged. WELCOME VISITORS We have printed out our worship service to make it easier for all of us to follow. Hymns are found in the hymn section of the Lutheran Service Book or in Worship & Praise, the purple supplement. Please visit our Welcome Center in the narthex for additional information about Redeemer. OUR THEME FOR TODAY is Challenged by Doubt. In doubt you need assurance. God acts and speaks to assure us and acts and speaks through us to assure others. We Come Into God s Presence (*) Those who are able are asked to standing during these parts of the service. HYMN In The Cross Of Christ I Glory... LSB 427 (*) CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION (Please stand.) P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. -1-

Redeemer Lutheran Church th Avenue SE Rochester, MN P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of the Lord, C: who made heaven and earth. P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C: and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. P: O almighty God, merciful Father, C: I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. P: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. (*) SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. P: Let us pray: O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy, be gracious to all who have gone astray from Your ways and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of Your Word; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 3 Redeemer Lutheran Church th Avenue SE Rochester, MN God Speaks to Us SCRIPTURE READINGS L: The Old Testament Reading for the Third Sunday In Lent is from the sixth chapter of Judges. 13 "Pardon me, my lord," Gideon replied, "but if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our ancestors told us about when they said, 'Did not the Lord bring us up out of Egypt? ' But now the Lord has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian." 14 The Lord turned to him and said, "Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian's hand. Am I not sending you?" 15 "Pardon me, my lord," Gideon replied, "but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family." 16 The Lord answered, "I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites, leaving none alive." 17 Gideon replied, "If now I have found favor in your eyes, give me a sign that it is really you talking to me. 18 Please do not go away until I come back and bring my offering and set it before you." And the Lord said, "I will wait until you return." 19 Gideon went inside, prepared a young goat, and from an ephah of flour he made bread without yeast. Putting the meat in a basket and its broth in a pot, he brought them out and offered them to him under the oak. 20 The angel of God said to him, "Take the meat and the unleavened bread, place them on this rock, and pour out the broth." And Gideon did so. 21 Then the angel of the Lord touched the meat and the unleavened bread with the tip of the staff that was in his hand. Fire flared from the rock, consuming the meat and the bread. And the angel of the Lord disappeared. 22 When Gideon realized that it was the angel of the Lord, he exclaimed, "Alas, Sovereign Lord! I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face!" 23 But the Lord said to him, "Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die." 24 So Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and called it The Lord Is Peace. To this day it stands in Ophrah of the Abiezrites. Judges 6:13-24 NIV L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. L: The Epistle is from the first chapter of 1 Corinthians. 18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; -3-

Redeemer Lutheran Church th Avenue SE Rochester, MN the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate." 20 Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 22 Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. 26 Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things and the things that are not to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him. 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31 Therefore, as it is written: "Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord." 1Corinthians 1:18-31 NIV L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. (*) HOLY GOSPEL L: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the second chapter. 13 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. 15 So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16 To those who sold doves he said, "Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father's house into a market!" 17 His disciples remembered that it is written: "Zeal for your house will consume me." 18 The Jews then responded to him, "What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?" 19 Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days." 20 They replied, "It has taken forty- six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?" 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body. 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken. John 2:13-22 NIV -4-

Redeemer Lutheran Church th Avenue SE Rochester, MN L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. (*) APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. 12 ENERGY DRINKS Not a Good Choice for Your Energy Boost In an article published by Concordia Plan Services of the LC-MS, using the Journal of Caffeine Research as their source, they reported that a study of the effects of a 5-Hour Energy shot showed that mental performance did not improve, but blood pressure greatly increased and was dangerously high for those who had a medical condition related to blood pressure. In a small study of men and women, ages 18 29, for those who took a 2 ounce serving (one bottle) of the energy drink, their accuracy and response time with the mental acuity test was the same as those who had taken no drink, or had taken a placebo. On the other hand, blood pressure was greatly increased in those study participants who drank the 5-Hour Energy shot, and remained elevated throughout the 6-hour study. Children are not exempt from the effects of energy drinks. The American Heart Association website reports that 40% of the 5,156 calls to poison centers for energy drink exposure involved children under age 6. In most cases, the parents did not know that the children had gotten hold of an energy drink. Many of the calls reported that the children were experiencing serious side effects such as an abnormal heart rhythm or they were having a seizure. It is also believed that the number of cases of children linked to energy drinks are higher than what are reported, with parents taking the child directly to a local emergency room. Some energy drinks contain more than 300 mg of caffeine and it can come in a combination of pharmaceutical-grade caffeine and natural additives. (Earlier studies show that caffeine combinations may cause more problems for people.) So how much caffeine is too much? For children, the Food and Drug Administration does not set a standard for what is considered a safe amount of caffeine, while the American Academy of Pediatrics prefers that children consume no caffeine, although about 73% of children do every day, according to their research. For healthy adults, the FDA considers between 100 to 200 mg of caffeine not harmful (that s about one to two 5-ounce cups of coffee); 400 mg a day is an amount not generally associated with dangerous, negative effects, 600 mg a day is considered too much. Mark the Date Sunday, March 29, 9:20 am, MN Adult Teen Challenge staff will share more in-depth about their services and ministry at the forum in Redeemer s Fellowship Hall. Don t miss this informative forum that focuses on a topic that touches so many lives and families. 5 Week of

Making Him Known But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8 Gideon: Making Him Known even when our Faith is Challenged BIBLE VERSE OF THE WEEK: So Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and called it The Lord Is Peace. Judges 6:24 POINTS TO PONDER THIS WEEK: Where does doubt challenge you? How does God assure you of His presence? Take it Home Doubt is not the enemy of faith. I have talked to many people who feel just awful that they have doubted. Some of these people wonder if they should even be welcomed at church because they some mes doubt. Doubt is a scary thing at mes but it is not the mark of a bad Chris an. Doubt is a normal and common thing for everyone. Spiritual strength comes from the Lord as we face doubt and come out leaning on God all the more! As Chris ans we all face doubt and that is a major reason why the, I don t need to go to church because I can worship God anywhere thinking falls flat. God supports us through doubt and send fellow believers to help us through. When you doubt that is not a me to stay away from church, but to come and tell people about it! This week pay a en on to your doubt. Do not hide from doubt and do not hide your doubt away. Talk to a Pastor, DCE, and trusted friend. If you have kids ask them if they have doubts. If they do, don t fret. Talk about it, talk together with a Pastor or DCE or trusted friend. When Thomas doubted Jesus resurrec on Jesus did tell him to, stop doub ng and believe, but first Jesus cared for Thomas and answered the doubts Thomas had. Bring your doubts to church! How does God use you to assure others?
