As a ten year old boy, I prayed that I would be on a specific Little League Baseball Team; I wasn't. At the age of twelve I prayed our family would stay in Hendersonville instead of moving to a new town; we didn't. When I was fourteen I prayed that the Washington Redskins would beat the Oakland Raiders in the Super Bowl; they didn't. Do you remember the first time you prayed for something and didn't get it? If we pray for things and don't get them, then why do we keep praying? Pastor John Killinger answered this question by writing: Prayer is not something we engage in because we wish to achieve anything. Prayer is communion with God. Killinger is saying that we pray, to experience communion with God and not to get things from Him. A biography about C.S. Lewis describes a time when his wife s cancer went into temporary remission and an Anglican Priest visited to offer encouragement. The Minister said to Lewis: I know how hard you ve been praying and now God is finally answering your prayer. Lewis responded, That s not why I pray; I don't pray to get what I want. I pray because I can t help myself. I pray because I m helpless. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time - waking and sleeping. My prayer doesn't change God; my prayer changes me. Lewis reminds us that we do not pray to change God or His will, but to be changed by God and changed to do His will. Prayer is not a requisition system by which we obtain from God the things we need to make our lives more comfortable. Prayer is simply communion with God. Prayer is how we get off our agenda and declare we desire to do Christ s will. If you pray so that you can receive your personal desires then you will be disappointed. However, if you pray to commune with God, to be changed by His hand in your life, and to join Him in the work He is doing all around you, then you will experience His power and presence in your life. 3 Minister of Education Our Hope Is In The Living God Words from the Baptist Hymnal #201 say: Face we the future unafraid on the foundation He has laid; Face we the future without fear knowing our help is always near; O may we grow within His love, worthy to reign with Him above. Hope for many is a word that implies anxious uncertain anticipation. I hope my football team wins. I hope I pass my test. I hope I am saved! BUT in the Bible, hope for the believer has a different meaning, one of joyful certainty and assurance. Whatever life may send our way, our hope is in God who can use all situations to mold and shape us in His likeness. As Paul writes in Romans 5 We rejoice in the hope of the glory of God...and hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts. 4 Minister of Music Fall is finally here...my favorite time of year! I love the cool, crisp mornings and the awesome beauty of the changing colors in nature. That heavy, sluggish feeling that comes with the heat and humidity of summer seems to be lifted. Even though schedules become busier and busier this time of year, for me there seems to be a fresh energy and excitement in what I m doing! It reminds me of how that heavy burden of sin we feel in our hearts before we know Jesus is lifted and replaced with new excitement, new energy, new life as we accept Him and become His children! 5 MINISTER of STUDENTS Bible Reading: John 14: ASK FOR SOMETHING OUTRAGEOUS What s the most outrageous thing you have ever asked God for? That a twenty-pound sack of money would spill at your feet? That the pimple growing like a third eye in the middle of your forehead would disappear by morning? Jesus said we could ask him for anything. That s right, He said ANYTHING! John 14:13 says He had a good reason to extend this invitation. Jesus-our only way to the Father and our only way to know what the Father is like-also wants to teach us to show off God s greatness. Here s the formula: Your prayer for anything in Christ s name + Christ s perfect answer to your prayer = Glory to the Father When we pray in Christ s name, we are asking for our requests to be fulfilled in Christ s will. Since Jesus knows how to bring glory to God, He will answer our prayers in His best way so that God receives the glory He deserves.
