1 TIDINGS January 2017 ST. JOHN S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 109 E. 14th Street, Davenport, IA Goals for St. John s United Methodist Church Adopted by the Church Council and Charge Conference Describe the local community surrounding your church location. St. John's and The Center are located within an urban area which is middle to lower class. We are in the area known as the Hilltop. Downtown Davenport is located at the bottom of the hill. The Hilltop Association has been working to increase commercial and residential options and has made many strides forward. For example, a building complex meant for apartments on the upper level and businesses on the lower level is within 3 blocks of the church. It has met with mixed success. However, it appears that a large percentage of small businesses that open in our neighborhood are transient with the same building being used by various entities over the course of a couple of years. Some of the businesses are lasting and have been in the area for a number of years. Within walking distance of the church is Madison Elementary School and Central High School, the middle school (JB Young) was closed after the end of the school year. There are restaurants, grocery stores, and pharmacies within walking distance. A school of higher education (Palmer College Chiropractic) is within a few blocks of the church. Ambrose University is within a mile from the church. We are located in one of the neighborhoods with the highest crime rates in Davenport. What are the greatest opportunities/needs for transforming ministry in your community? Our location (near to downtown and in areas within the lower income level) means there is are significant population of homeless, rentals, transients, and families/persons who are financially struggling. The percentage of drug activity and shootings is higher than in other areas of the Quad-Cities. Many families are at-risk for a variety of reasons. Our church on the corner is highly visible and folks know of its existence, even if they have never been inside its doors. The Center is extremely well-known as a place for persons to get help. It houses the most used food pantry on the Iowa side of the Mississippi River and provides showers and laundry facilities for the homeless. The Brady Street Cluster of Churches United helps more folks with rental and utility assistance than all of the clusters in the Quad-Cities area. We are also very near the student population that attends Palmer College. We could easily partner with Madison Elementary, Central High School or other schools in the surrounding neighborhood. What is your 2016 goal for next year to help you accomplish what God is asking of you? To continue to explore, investigate, and develop ways to become a more inviting congregation in 2016 by concentrating on Communication and Training for current active worship participants and church members. We will stress developing ministries that are creative, compassionate, and Christ-centered. The desired outcome: 20% of our active worship participants at St. John's will invite an unchurched, dechurched, or unaffiliated person to St. John's in In order to do this, we will focus on these categories: Developing worship strategies to become more inviting through brief talks in worship, inserts/flyers, and sermons Developing creative invitations that our members/participants can use to invite others Developing studies or workshops that are meant to train/inspire our members/participants to invite others Improving outdoor signage Continue to improve and refine our strategies in welcoming visitors Planning and organizing special events that are meant to invite our neighbors, with a special target of year olds Improving media relations, use of media, and marketing methods Our 2017 mission: To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world by being a creative, compassionate, Christian community! Invite! Invite! Invite!

2 THE NEBRASKA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY CHOIR The Nebraska Wesleyan University Choir is a select ensemble, more than half of whom are music majors. The choir has a long history of performances throughout the world and performs extensively in the United States. Annual domestic tours as well as regular foreign concert tours are part of the Wesleyan Choir experience. Major performances with a professional symphony are part of each year with the choir having performed with orchestras in New York, Omaha, Lincoln, Madison, and Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Convention concerts for music organizations are a regular part of the concert year. Performing concerts rich in global diversity, the Wesleyan Choir has received critical acclaim in the major cultural centers of England, Scotland, Ireland, Western Europe, China, Korea, Japan, Russia, Estonia, Sweden, Romania, and throughout the United States. The Nebraska Wesleyan University Choir will present a concert in our Sanctuary on January 10, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. with a reception in Fellowship Hall to follow. We are in need of one night of housing and breakfast for the 46 choir members; overnight January 10 to January 11. If you can help, please contact Bruce Wallace, Director of Music, at brucewallace@stjohnsumc-dav.com, or call the church at , or Bruce s cell phone at CHURCH CLOSING INFORMATION In the event of inclement weather, St John s UMC will follow the Davenport Public Schools lead. If school is cancelled on a day, the church will be closed and all meetings and groups scheduled for the church that day will be cancelled. If the school system declares an early out, all activities from that point forward will be cancelled at the church. Once a cancellation takes effect, for the safety of all, all church activities will be cancelled. We will not cancel weekend worship, but we encourage you to use your best judgment on those days. Your safety is primary. No weddings or funerals that are scheduled will ever be cancelled for weather. We will notify the local media as soon as we are aware of cancellations. We will also post notifications on our church website at

We feel it was really successful. We had more children this year than last so we were cleaned out of many things. 5 MISSIONS UPDATE Rev. Willie Trusheim, Missions Committee Coordinator January "Kids Against Hunger Offering" The Kids Against Hunger offering will be on January 7-8. Refugee numbers continue to greatly increase because of war and political upheaval. Children make up a large number of the hungry and dying. When you give to Kids against Hunger every dollar ( $1.00) provides four (4) meals. Our goal is for $1,000.00, providing 4,000 meals. At least 15% of the meals are retained in local communities in the Quad City Area. Pray about your gift, knowing it will help a needy person. Thank you for your generous gift. An Offering Envelope will be provided. Proposed Offerings Schedule for 2017 The Mission Offering Schedule is provided to enable you to plan your giving support for the year. If there are special causes, such as disasters, they will be inserted in the schedule or the schedule will be altered. You may also choose to support our missionaries: Jane and Larry Kies in Zimbabwe, The Fogleman's in South Sudan, and Angela Hubbard at Red Bird Mission Clinic. Thank you for your response. THANK YOU for your faithful mission giving in You have helped many people and projects local in the United States and around the world. PRAYER AT ST. JOHN S BEHOLD WE PRAY HAVE HOLY URGENCY WITH PATIENCE Happy New Year! This year s prayer paragraph will be thoughts from HOW TO PRAY: THE BEST OF JOHN WESLEY ON PRAYER. John Wesley said: All that a Christian does, even in eating & sleeping, is pray, when it is done in simplicity, according to the order of God; without either adding to or diminishing from it by his own choice! Romans12:11-12 NASB says, Fervent in spirit devoted to prayers. You can fill out a prayer card in your service and state if you want the request to be on the prayer bookmark or the prayer chain. The prayer chain is more private and includes a large variety of prayer concerns. It is important that we get permission to put the prayer request on the bookmark and/or chain. Some people want their prayer needs to be just between them and God. It is also very much appreciated when you let us know of changes in your prayer concern! ADULT FELLOWSHIP NO MEETING IN JANUARY AND FEBRUARY!! FOOD PANTRY NEWS Sharon Imming Happy New Year to each and everyone of you. The Center made 250 baskets for Thanksgiving. Thank you St. John's and thank you from all the people who received our donations. We collected 619 items and $ in monetary donations for the Food Pantry.
