6 MINISTRY OF MUSIC Mitzi Harris, Chancel Choir and Chancel Bells Director Do you have just enough time to join the choir for one short season?...like October-December? We will begin work on the Christmas Cantata on Saturday morning October 6, from If you would like, we would love to have you join us for this "read-through" session to see what the cantata is like. There will be donuts/muffins/coffee and lots of good singing fellowship. After October 6, we will rehearse the cantata on Thursdays from 7-7:30 p.m. It will be presented at 4:00 p.m. on December 2, with pieces from the cantata used in 9:00 a.m. worship throughout December. We hope you will consider joining us for this music ministry and outreach time. Handbells will also be joining the choir for the Christmas concert, and we need bell ringers. (3 of our bell members moved away.) If you are interested in trying bells, contact Mitzi or any of the bell players. God Bless you for keeping the music program in your prayers. Mitzi Harris October 7 is World Communion Sunday. To celebrate our unity with other Christian communities, we will have a SERVICE OF THE LOAVES during the 11:00 Celebration Worship Service which will include readings, songs, and breads from around the world. Come and experience the blessing of sharing Holy Communion with fellow Christians everywhere. PRAYER AT ST. JOHN S The Lord is Loving Toward all He has Made The Lord is righteous in all his ways and faithful in all he does. The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them. The Lord watches over all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy. Psalm 145:17-20 NIV MISSIONS UPDATE Scott Wolf, Missions Committee Coordinator WORLD COMMUNION OFFERING on Oct. 6 & 7 This offering calls United Methodists to join Christians around the world to reach out to all people and model diversity among God s children. It is a day when the diverse body of Christ shares the sacrament while affirming that there is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all (Eph 4:4-5). Half our Offering for Worldwide Communion is for Ethnic Scholarships for students needing financial help. Lena Kuffuor- Afriyie tells of her goal to open a pharmacy in Ghana to help people get proper medications and to help people having health needs who are not near hospitals. Lena s story is typical of the many students who need our help to pursue their educational dreams. An envelope will be in the worship bulletin. Our goal is $300. Thank you for generous gift. HURRICANE DISASTER HELP At the time of this Tidings article, Hurricane Florence is hammering the east coast. Your contributions directly aide people affected by the hurricane and flooding through UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief). We received a special offering on September 30. If you would like to donate, send your gift to the church office. CROP WALK for HUNGER on October 7 Sponsored by Church World Service, the CROP Walk is committed to building a hunger-free world. 95 million people around the world need your support for food. $20 supplies a year s worth of micronutrient packets. $100 helps train 25 farmers to raise food. $500 provides seeds and garden tools for a community garden. The money you raise through donations helps young families, homeless folks, the elderly, the hungry and the hurting, poor neighborhoods, helps to build wells, rebuild farms, resettle refuges, and, above all else, provides hope. Thank you to all who have contributed to CROP. Our goal is for $2,000 or more. You can give on Sunday mornings, or you can contact Willie Trusheim for support forms. The Walk starts at 2:00 pm at the Freight House on October 7. This is a great cause because 25% stays right here in the Quad Cities. FOOD PANTRY Sharon Imming, St. John s Food Pantry Coordinator We collected 226 items for September, down from a year ago by 94. I need to get that challenge out again that we want to beat a year ago; our goal is 148. I know YOU can do it. Cash for July was $540 (Thanksgiving in July month), thank you! School has started so lets watch the sales for snack items for after school. Also watch those ads for bargains eg: 10 for $10 or coupons. What you don't want, the Food Pantry will accept. Thanks to those who brought in paper products, they are greatly appreciated. Don't forget laundry soap, bar soap and dish soap. They aren't food but are necessities. Thank you and God's Blessings to all!

We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 A Letter from Paul Beatty It has been awhile since my last letter, so let me recap our beginning of school. Teachers came back August 1, and students followed suit on August 7. We launched our professional learning with an introduction to growth mindset based around Carolyn Dweck s work. Dweck s basic premise is that performance is hampered by a fixed mindset believing our intelligence and skills are fixed traits that cannot be significantly developed. Conversely, Dweck argues that performance is enhanced by a growth mindset believing that our intelligence and skills are malleable with effort, rehearsal, and adaptation. Two weeks later, I find myself reflecting on the role that faith plays in remaining growth minded in the face of adversity. With Bangladeshi Christians after speaking engagement The accomplishments of the two weeks included first and foremost starting school on time. In June, there was a real possibility that William Carey Academy would not be able to open due to the number of vacancies we had on the teaching staff particularly at the high school. God blessed us with 2 long term substitute teachers and one new staff member which was sufficient to open our doors on time. August 7 th arrived and students returned with enthusiasm for the new school year. Open house for elementary, middle school, and high school on three consecutive evenings were inspiring to meet the parents who have profound loyalty and support for the school and its future. We had our annual school dedication ceremony and staff overnight retreat. We transported 36 staff members 4 hours over very bumpy and congested road to a village named Malumghat. It was certainly a nice change to travel outside the city and learn about life in the rural regions. Personally, I was given the privilege to address over fifty Bangladeshi Christians about overcoming our personal barriers to sharing our testimony. I was thankful for my experiences with St. John s United Methodist Church, the House of Refuge Church, and the Walk to Emmaus events through which God equipped me for that message. Thanks for staying with me through this letter. This is all to say that in the midst of all the demands of starting school normally, these challenges could have pushed our staff into a fixed mindset of being victims. However, the strength of this staff s faith emerged and kept us focused on solutions and possibilities. As we finished the two weeks with our retreat, not a single pessimistic comment was uttered by the staff. In fact quite the opposite, they expressed optimism for our mission and future. I am certainly blessed to be part of this organization through your support. Prayer Requests: We have urgent needs to fill our high school math position and an elementary position by October 1 st. Please lift prayers and mention these needs to anyone you know who might be able to help us fill these vacancies. A very warm and humbling welcome from many of the William Carey staff upon my arrival to the school The complete letter is available on the church website.
