2 Inspiring Stewardship Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God s grace in its various forms (1 Peter 4:10). Beginning September 24, we will be entering our annual stewardship emphasis entitled, Faithful Stewards of God s Infinite Grace. We will consider what it means to be a faithful steward and how our stewardship translates into practical Christianity. This emphasis is built on two concepts: God owns everything! Our responsibility is to manage that which belongs to God, which God has entrusted to us. In other words, all that we have is a blessing from God and represents that which God has loaned to us on a temporary basis. What kinds of things belong to God? Our time is a gift on loan from God. All of us have the same amount of time 24 hours per day. How we use our time is what makes the difference for this life and for eternity. Will we waste it or invest it for God s glory and the good of others? Our talents are also gifts on loan from God. Not everyone receives an equal amount of talents or abilities, but all of us can excel at something. Will we share our talents for our own benefit or in ministry to strengthen the world? Our treasure is a gift on loan from God. Make no mistake about it: According to Deuteronomy 8:17-18, God gives us the ability to earn money. Even work itself is a gift from God (Ecclesiastes 5:18-19). Will we keep our treasure for only ourselves or will we share it to support God s work in the world? The question is not whether we can do something for the Lord. The question is if we will use our time, talents, and treasure to serve the Lord. As one of the Faithful Stewards of God s Infinite Grace here at St. John s will you make a commitment to God to use the time and talents that have been given to you to make a difference in the ministry and outreach of our church? Remember, as one of those to whom God has entrusted time, talents and treasure, God is counting on you.... 4 Pathfinders Located: Lower Level Room 10 This class is for the young adults to middle agers and parents that just need to talk about being a parent. We are about coffee and Christ led conversation. There is talk about parenting, social issues, and relationships, using study books, articles, videos, and the Upper Room. We have a passion for service and community so we will have the option to do at least one act of service quarterly, while also serving at Café on Vine twice a year, serving 2:42 meals, or helping with the monthly food pantry and can collection drive. We re always up to pitching in and helping where we can! Open Door Located: Lower Level at bottom of steps near the 14th St church entrance Lively, informal, and open discussions paired with books by Max Lucado, teaching authors J. Ellsworth Kalas and James Moore, or studies on the various books of the Bible make this class diverse. We support a couple of the UM missionaries, as well as serving at Café on Vine, participating in Volunteers In Missions teams headed to disaster areas and the Redbird Mission in Kentucky, holding potluck socials around holidays and events like the Super Bowl and Quad Cities Pops. 49 ers Located: Wesley Room on the main level Going since 1949, the 49ers are a group of studious minds working together to understand and practice Jesus Christ s words and love. We use the Uniform Series Adult Bible Studies. We have occasional outings during the year. Questors Located: Conference Room on the main level In existence over 50 years, this class has literally grown in our faith, raising our children, and growing older together. Four teachers rotate teaching the Uniform Series Adult Bible Studies, and everyone is encouraged to share experiences and situations matching to the lessons. We hold group socials, serve Salvation Army/homeless center meals and support many other church missions. Voyagers Located: Parish House This class uses the Upper Room Daily Devotional, mixing in discussion, prayer, and scripture readings. We sponsor a domestic abuse family during the Christmas season. Sojourners Located: Fellowship Hall The Sojourners class meets in Fellowship Hall for coffee and donuts to catch up on their week and connect through prayer and devotion. The group is designed as a small and informal group. Nursery Located: ML105 Currently staffed by Zaida Bradley and Abby Meeks and available from 8:15am-12:15pm Sundays, as well as other special events hosted at the church. The nursery provides a safe and fun place for your babies and toddlers to play and be cared for. Preschool - Kindergarten Located: ML107 Taught in rotation by Jennifer Knutsen and Jennifer Jones using the younger elementary curriculum of Deep Blue Adventures, where kids learn their Bible through science activities, arts and crafts, skits or animated videos, and games. 1st - 4th Grade Located: LL08 Taught in rotation by Molly Giese and Rachel Lanning using the older elementary curriculum of Deep Blue Adventures, where kids learn their Bible through science activities, arts and crafts, skits or animated videos, and games. 5th - 6th Grade Currently seeking a teacher. (TBD) Located: LL06 Confirmation Located: LL12 Taught by Jamie Nielsen using the Confirm curriculum. More information is included on The Spark page of this month s Tidings. High School (7th - 12 Grade) Located LL14 This year our students will study the Bible through the teens version of The Story which uses video lessons and discussion. It is becoming more and more apparent that youth need a safe place to talk about the tough stuff, this class strives to provide that place in which students feel comfortable sharing. 4

5 From the Financial Secretary, Don Sprosty: Effective Monday, 8/28/17 my office hours will change. My new schedule will be 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM, Monday thru Thursday. Thank you...don Sprosty MISSIONS UPDATE Rev. Willie Trusheim, Missions Committee Coordinator STUDENT DAY SEPTEMBER 2 & 3 With college costs going up yearly, early savings doesn't meet the cost of a college degree. Student Loan debt is at an all-time high. Students end up over their heads in debt and jobs are hard to get. The United Methodist Student Loan Program can assist some with a low interest rate and a repayment plan. There are some grants given as well in some cases. Great news about the Student Day Loan Program is that it has less than a 1% default rate through the years. This means money is recycled again and again to other needy students who need help. So, think about how many other students have been helped when a $1,000 loan ten years ago is repaid yearly. Ten students are helped with the same $1,000 dollars in ten years. Think what $100,000 does over 10 years. A goal of $ dollars may not seem like much but it makes a big difference when added to what other churches contribute yearly. An envelope will be provided for your gift. I am sure most of us have experienced college cost, so we know the feeling and need for help. Thank you for your generous gift. INGATHERING ITEMS NEEDED: September 2 & 3 and September 10 & 11 will be the weekends for people to take slips of paper with school and health kit items needed for the Ingathering in November. Our goal is 100 school kits and 25 health kits this year. Items for School Kits include 6 pencils # 2 lead, erasers 2 1/2" size, metal scissors with blunt tips, 1-30cm metric ruler, wide line spiral or bound note pads of 70 sheets, box of 24 crayons (only 24), and 1 handheld pencil sharpener. Health Kits include 1 new hand towel 15 by 25, 1 bath size bar of soap, 1 new toothbrush, 1 new washcloth, 6 band aids (3/4"), 1 large sturdy comb (not pocket sized), 1 fingernail clipper or nail file (no emery boards or toenail clippers). The Ingathering boxes will be in the entryways of the church for your donations. You may also donate money in your offering envelope marking the amount for the Ingathering. There is a $2 charge for shipping costs per kit. We also need funds to help complete kits. But do not leave money in the box at the entry. Thank you for your support!! PRAYER AT ST. JOHN S NOT PRAYING IS A SIN OF OMISSION John Wesley warns: Perhaps no sin of omission more frequently occasions this than the neglect of prayer! By being in a continual state of prayer our lives are less complicated! Isaiah 30:21 NIV says: Whether you turn to the right or the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you saying, This is the way; walk in it! You can fill out a prayer card at worship and state if you want the request to be on the Prayer Bookmark or the prayer chain. The prayer chain is more private and includes a large variety of prayer concerns. It is important that we get permission to put the prayer request on the bookmark and/or chain. Some people want their prayer needs to be just between them and God. It is also very much appreciated when you let us know of changes in your prayer concern! CANDLELIGHT HEALING SERVICE SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 3 On Labor Day weekend, we celebrate our various labors. We also realize that we sometimes need to rest from work. Jesus often retreated from his ministry to rest. Even God rested on the seventh day. Come and join us as we light our candles, share in Holy Communion, and provide an opportunity for anointing prayers. We invite you to take a break from your work and activities and worship with us at our Candlelight Healing Worship Service at 6:30 on September 3 in the Parlor! ADULT FELLOWSHIP MEETING The next meeting of Adult Fellowship is Wednesday September 6th at 1:00 p.m. in the Parlor. This will be a dessert and coffee meeting with a program. Our speaker will be Megan Keller, Director of Christian Education. New members are always welcome! Come join us for fellowship, dessert and an informative speaker. For more information or if you re not on our calling list, call Bob Faso at LABOR DAY WEEKEND! The Church Office will be closed on Labor Day, Monday, September 4. Regular hours resume on Tuesday, September 5. (8:00 am-5 pm Monday-Friday) 5

UNIT MEETING The unit meeting of United Methodist Women on September 13 will have a special program presented by Sarah Paulos. She is the Program and Outreach Coordinator for Iowa Interfaith Power and Light (IPL). The mission of IPL is to inspire and equip people of faith to become leaders in finding solutions to climate change. She is the creator of the Cool Congregations program, and she helped design Cool Neighbors, a neighborhood energy reduction challenge between historic neighborhood associations, based out of the center for Energy and Environmental Education at UNI. Ms. Paulos believes that climate change is a moral issue, disproportionately impacting those who are most vulnerable in our world. Everyone is invited!! Please call reservations to Linda Jantz at for the luncheon at 12:00 pm by Sunday evening prior the meeting. Luncheon is $3.00. This will be a really informative meeting so please plan to attend. If you don t want the luncheon, the program will start about 12:45 p.m. FROM PARISH NURSE This month my article is on sleep. I hope you find it useful. Barb Beeks, Parish Nurse. A good night's sleep not only helps your mood and energy level, it may also help make your immune system stronger and help you fight a cold or flu. New studies also show that if you get 7-8 hours of sleep at night, you can lower your chance of gaining weight in your belly area the kind of fat that increases your risk of diabetes and heart disease. Here are some tips to help you get a good night's sleep starting tonight. 1. Set a schedule. Go to bed and get up the same time each day. 2. Make it a routine. Do the same thing every night to get ready for bed. 3. Eating and drinking matter. Don't eat a heavy meal right before going to bed. If you are sensitive to caffeine try not to drink coffee, tea, or cola at night. 4. Prepare your space. Fix the room you sleep in to make it better for sleep. Usually this means a cool, dark, quiet space. 5. Don't take long afternoon naps. 6. Get regular activity. 6
