Fr George Kolodziej SDS Parish Priest Pope Francis April Prayer Intentions Universal: For Those who have Responsibility in Economic Matters That economists may have the courage to reject any economy of exclusion and know how to open new paths. Thoughts of Fr Francis Jordan You should be men of faith and, therefore, also have great confidence. Hope springs from faith. If you wish to do great things for the glory of God and the salvation of souls, then you need great, powerful faith and boundless confidence. Rejoice and be glad (Mt 5:12), Jesus tells those persecuted or humiliated for his sake. The Lord asks everything of us, and in return he offers us true life, the happiness for which we were created. He wants us to be saints and not to settle for a bland and mediocre existence. (GE, 1) 1 Keenan Street Mona Vale NSW 2103 Tel: Fax office@pittwaterparish.org website:

5 The Living Word - ANZAC Day 9.30am Mass First Reading Is 9:1-6 A reading from the prophet Isaiah Wide is the dominion of the Lord, in a peace that has no end. The people that walked in darkness has seen a great light; on those who lived in a land of deep shadow a light has shone. You have made their gladness greater, you have made their joy increase; they rejoice in your presence as men rejoice at harvest time, as men are happy when they are dividing up the spoils. For the yoke that was weighing on him, the bar across his shoulders, the rod of his oppressor, these you break as on the day of Midian. For all the footgear of battle, every cloak rolled in blood, is burnt, and consumed by fire. For there is a child born for us, a son given to us and dominion is laid on his shoulders; and this is the name they give him: Wonder-Counsellor, Mighty-God, Eternal-Father, Prince-of-Peace. Wide is his dominion in a peace that has no end, for the throne of David and for his royal power, which he establishes and makes secure in justice and integrity. From this time onwards and for ever, the jealous love of the Lord of Hosts will do this. The word of the Lord Responsorial Psalm Ps 114:5-6; 115: , R. v.9 (R.) I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. How gracious is the Lord, and just; our God has compassion. The Lord protects the simple hearts; I was helpless so he saved me. (R) I trusted, even when I said: I am sorely afflicted, and when I said in my alarm: No man can be trusted. (R) O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful. Your servant, Lord, your servant am I; you have loosened my bonds. (R) Second Reading 1 Cor 1:18-25 A reading from the first letter of St Paul to the Corinthians God s weakness is stronger than human strength. The language of the cross may be illogical to those who are not on the way to salvation, but those of us who are on the way see it as God's poower to save. As scripture says: I shall destroy the wisdom of the wise and bring to nothing all the learning of the learned. Where are the philosophers now? Where are the scribes? Where are any of our thinkers today? Do you see now how God has shown up the foolishness of human wisdom? If it was God's wisdom that human wisdom should not know God, it was because God wanted to save those who have faith through the foolishness of the message that we preach. And so, while the Jews demand miracles and the Greeks look for wisdom, here are we preaching a crucified Christ: to the Jews an obstacle that they cannot get over, to the pagans madness but to those who have been called whether they are Jews or Greeks a Christ who is the power and the wisdom of God. For God's foolishness is wiser than human wisdom and God's weakness is stronger than human strength. The word of the Lord Gospel Acclamation Jn 10:14 Alleluia, alleluia! I am the good shepherd, says the Lord; I know my sheep, and mine know me. Alleluia! Gospel Jn10:11-18 A reading from the holy Gospel according to John The good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep. Jesus said: I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd is one who lays down his life for his sheep. The hired man, since he is not the shepherd and the sheep do not belong to him, abandons the sheep and runs away as soon as he sees a wolf coming, and then the wolf attacks and scatters the sheep; this is because he is only a hired man and has no concern for the sheep. I am the good shepherd; I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for my sheep. And there are other sheep I have that are not of this fold, and these I have to lead as well. They too will listen to my voice, and there will be only one flock and one shepherd. The Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me; I lay it down of my own free will, and as it is in my power to lay it down, so it is in my power to take it up again; and this is the command I have been given by my Father. The Gospel of the Lord. ANZAC DAY FACTS ANZAC Day is upon us again, so Ihere are some interesting and often unknown facts about ANZACS and ANZAC Day, so others will understand why we honour this national day. The ANZACs were all volunteers. April 25, ANZAC Day, was the day the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula in April, was officially named ANZAC Day in The first dawn service on an ANZAC Day was in AIF is an abbreviation for Australian Imperial Force. There is no town called Gallipoli. It is the name of an area. Visitors to Gallipoli usually stay at nearby towns like Ecubeat. ANZAC Day was not a public holiday in New Zealand until ANZAC Day was not a public holiday in Australia until However it was not observed uniformly in all the states. The Gallipoli Peninsula is very near the famous ancient city of Troy. The term ANZAC is protected under Australian law. More than 11,000 ANZACs died at Gallipoli and more than 23,500 were wounded. Services are held at dawn because in battle, dawn was the best time to attack the enemy. Soldiers would wake in the dark so at the first signs of light they were alert and awake. The original ANZAC biscuit was known as an ANZAC wafer or tile and was part of the rations given to the ANZAC soldiers during World War I. They were included instead of bread because they had a much longer shelf life. ANZAC biscuits were created by wives of soldier s who wanted to bake healthy goodies for their men. They lacked egg and milk, so kept for a long time and didn t spoil during transport. The Poppy as a symbol comes from Canadian John McCrae s WWI poem, In Flanders Fields. It was used as a symbol by the Canadians for their Rememberance Day, and has been adapted as a reminder of the loss of all veterans in all wars. The wearing of rosemary on ANZAC Day is done as a mark of respect for the men who never returned from Gallipoli, or indeed, later wars. The wearing of it honours the memory of those brave men. The Last Post is incorporated into funeral and memorial services as a final farewell and symbolises that the duty of the dead is over and that they can rest in peace. The men who served on the Gallipoli Peninsula created a legend, adding the word ANZAC to our vocabulary and creating the idea of the ANZAC spirit. In Tonga, Samoa, Cook Islands and Niue, ANZAC Day is also commemorated to honour their soldiers who participated in the campaign. ANZAC Day is commemorated in France in the towns of Le Quesnoy and Longueval. ANZAC Day is commemorated in the village of Harefield in Middlesex just outside of London because of a quirk in history. In 1914, millionaire Sydney expat Charles Billyard-Leake offered his manor home and 250 acres of parkland for injured Australian troops to recoup. It was imagined 50 soldiers in winter, 150 in summer would be catered for. But by the following year and post Gallipoli, it had become a fully-fledged hospital with 1000 beds just for Australian soldiers. More than 50,000 wounded Diggers passed through the home, which became known as Number 1 Australian Auxiliary Hospital.

6 The Living Word First Reading Acts 4:8-12 A reading from the Acts of the Apostles This is the only name by which we can be saved. Filled with the Holy Spirit, Peter said: Rulers of the people, and elders! If you are questioning us today about an act of kindness to a cripple, and asking us how he was healed, then I am glad to tell you all, and would indeed be glad to tell the whole people of Israel, that it was by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, the one you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by this name and by no other that this man is able to stand up perfectly healthy, here in your presence, today. This is the stone rejected by you the builders, but which has proved to be the keystone. For of all the names in the world given to men, this is the only one by which we can be saved. The word of the Lord Responsorial Psalm Ps 117: R. v.22 (R.) The stone rejected by the builders has become the cornerstone. or (R) Alleluia. Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, for his love has no end. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in men: it is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes. (R) I will thank you for you have given answer and you are my saviour. The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes (R) Blessed in the name of the Lord is he who comes. We bless you from the house of the Lord; I will thank you for you have given answer and you are my saviour. Give thanks to the Lord for he is good; for his love has no end. (R) Second Reading 1 Jn 3:1-2 A reading from the first letter of St John We shall see God as he is. Think of the love that the Father has lavished on us, by letting us be called God s children; and that is what we are. Because the world refused to acknowledge him, therefore it does not acknowledge us. My dear people, we are already the children of God but what we are to be in the future has not yet been revealed; all we know is, that when it is revealed we shall be like him because we shall see him as he really is. The word of the Lord Gospel Acclamation Jn 10:14 Alleluia, alleluia! I am the good shepherd, says the Lord; I know my sheep, and mine know me. Alleluia! Gospel Jn 10:11-18 A reading from the holy Gospel according to John The good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep. REFLECTION by Dianne Bergant CSS This Sunday is traditionally known as Good Shepherd Sunday. Two major themes emerge from the readings: an image of the one who saves; and the power of salvation itself. The one who saves is not a mighty warrior who comes in military array. In fact, he is the one who was rejected, who was hunted down, humiliated, tortured and hung naked on a tree, there to die in shame. The one who saves is the cornerstone of the building, holding it together, forming a firm foundation so that the structure will not collapse. The one who saves is a lowly shepherd, entrusted with sheep, not with the affairs of state. The one who saves is an unlikely saviour. This characterisation should give us pause. Is it possible that we have been looking for a saviour in the wrong places? God s saving power flows from steadfast covenant love. It broke open the world in the death and resurrection of Jesus and it overflows as healing grace. The saving power in the name of Jesus, a name that itself means saviour (cf. Matt 1:21), is for all people, even for those sheep who do not yet belong to this fold. Furthermore, it is for all time; God s mercy endures forever. Through our baptism we can bring the saving grace of God to a world in desperate need of healing. We can do this in our families, in our local communities, in the workplace, in so many situations of our lives.
