1 A Beautiful Prayer I asked God to take away my habit. It is not for me to take away, but for you to give it up. I asked God to make my handicapped child whole. His spirit is whole, his body is only temporary. I asked God to grant me patience. Patience is a by product of tribulations; it isn t granted, it is learned. I asked God to give me happiness. I give you Blessings; Happiness is up to you. I asked God to spare me pain. Suffering draws you apart from worldly cares and brings you closer to me. A warm welcome to our parishioners and visitors who are celebrating the Eucharist with us at Sacred Heart Church and Maria Regina Church. Fr George Kolodziej SDS Parish Priest Pope Francis Prayer Intentions For October The Mission of Religious That consecrated religious men and women may bestir themselves, and be present among the poor, the marginalised, and those who have no voice. Thoughts of Fr Francis Jordan No sacrifice, no cross, no desolation, no trial, no temptation, oh! absolutely nothing should be too difficult for you with the help of God s grace. I can do all things in God who strengthens me. I asked God to make my spirit grow. You must grow on your own, but I will prune you to make you fruitful. I asked God for all things that I may enjoy life. I will give you life, so that you may enjoy all things. I asked God to help me LOVE others, as much as He loves me. God said... Ahhhh, finally you have the idea. 1 Keenan Street Mona Vale NSW 2103 Tel: Fax office@pittwaterparish.org website:

4 Our prayers for rain for Australia was most certainly answered as it poured non-stop on Friday. On Saturday morning, the sky was blue, the sun was shining through, the birds were chirping away and the bay was just serene. We were blessed with the most beautiful conditions for our rosary in the park. Fr George greeted everybody and Sam Browne sang Ave Maria and Hail Mary Gentle Woman and Fr George started the Rosary assisted by Theresa who introduced the Joyful Mysteries. The decades were lead by Kathy Geach, Mary O Connor, Brian Wright, Martin Kerrigan and Ray Gillis. Sam closed the Rosary with Hail Queen of Heaven and Fr George thanked everybody who organised and set up the morning for all.
5 Pope Francis invites the faithful to pray the Rosary in October tuque, Princeps militiae caelestis, Satanam aliosque spiritus malignos, qui ad perditionem animarum pervagantur in mundo, divina virtute, in infernum detrude. Amen. Let us pray the Rosary Pope Francis' invitation The Holy Father has decided to invite all the faithful, of all the world, to pray the Holy Rosary every day, during the entire Marian month of October, and thus to join in communion and in penitence, as the people of God, in asking the Holy Mother of God and Saint Michael Archangel to protect the Church from the devil, who always seeks to separate us from God and from each other. In recent days, before his departure for the Baltic States, the Holy Father met with Fr. Fréderic Fornos, S.J., international director of the World Network of Prayer for the Pope, and asked him to spread this appeal to all the faithful throughout the world, inviting them to conclude the recitation of the Rosary with the ancient invocation Sub Tuum Praesidium, and with the prayer to Saint Michael Archangel that he protect us and help us in the struggle against evil (cf. Revelation 12, 7-12). [Saint Michael Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; may God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen]. The Rosary is a synthesis of the mysteries of Christ: we contemplate them with Mary, who allows us to see with her eyes of faith and love. Pope Francis Reflects on the Rosary. Here I would like to emphasize the beauty of a simple contemplative prayer, accessible to all, great and small, the educated and those with little education. It is the prayer of the Holy Rosary. In the Rosary we turn to the Virgin Mary so that she may guide us to an ever closer union with her Son Jesus to bring us into conformity with him, to have his sentiments and to behave like him. Indeed, in the Rosary while we repeat the Hail Mary we meditate on the Mysteries, on the events of Christ s life, so as to know and love him ever better. The Rosary is an effective means for opening ourselves to God, for it helps us to overcome egotism and to bring peace to hearts, in the family, in society and in the world. -from the book Mother Mary: Inspiring Words from Pope Francis The prayer the Pontiff affirmed a few days ago, on 11 September, in a homily at Santa Marta, citing the first book of Job is the weapon against the Great Accuser who goes around the world seeking to accuse. Only prayer can defeat him. The Russian mystics and the great saints of all the traditions advised, in moments of spiritual turbulence, to shelter beneath the mantle of the Holy Mother of God pronouncing the invocation Sub Tuum Praesidium. Sub Tuum Praesidium The invocation Sub Tuum Praesidium is recited as follows: Sub tuum praesidium confugimus Sancta Dei Genitrix. Nostras deprecationes ne despicias in necessitatibus, sed a periculis cunctis libera nos semper, Virgo Gloriosa et Benedicta. [We fly to thy protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O Glorious and Blessed Virgin]. With this request for intercession the Holy Father asks the faithful of all the world to pray that the Holy Mother of God place the Church beneath her protective mantle: to preserve her from the attacks by the devil, the great accuser, and at the same time to make her more aware of the faults, the errors and the abuses committed in the present and in the past, and committed to combating without any hesitation, so that evil may not prevail. Prayer to Saint Michael The Holy Father has also asked that the recitation of the Holy Rosary during the month of October conclude with the prayer written by Leo XIII: Sancte Michael Archangele, defende nos in proelio; contra nequitiam et insidias diaboli esto praesidium. Imperet illi Deus, supplices deprecamur:
6 The Living Word First Reading Is 53:10-11 A reading from the prophet Isaiah If he offers his life in atonement, he shall see his heirs, and have long life. The Lord has been pleased to crush his servant with suffering. If he offers his life in atonement, he shall see his heirs, he shall have a long life and through him what the Lord wishes will be done. His soul's anguish over he shall see the light and be content. By his sufferings shall my servant justify many, taking their faults on himself. The word of the Lord Responsorial Psalm Ps 32: R. v.22 (R.) Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you. The word of the Lord is faithful and all his works to be trusted. The Lord loves justice and right and fills the earth with his love. (R) The Lord looks on those who revere him, on those who hope in his love. to rescue their souls from death, to keep them alive in famine. (R) Our soul is waiting for the Lord. The Lord is our help and our shield. May your love be upon us, O Lord, as we place all our hope in you. (R) Second Reading Heb 4:14-16 A reading from the letter to the Hebrews Let us be confident in approaching the throne of grace. Since in Jesus, the Son of God, we have the supreme high priest who has gone through to the highest heaven, we must never let go of the faith that we have professed. For it is not as if we had a high priest who was incapable of feeling our weaknesses with us; but we have one who has been tempted in every way that we are, though he is without sin. Let us be confident, then, in approaching the throne of grace, that we shall have mercy from him and find grace when we are in need of help. The word of the Lord Gospel Acclamation Mk 10:45 Alleluia, alleluia! The Son of Man came to serve and to give his life as a ransom for all. Alleluia! Gospel Mk 10:35-45 A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark The Son of Man came to give his life as a ransom for all. James and John, the sons of Zebedee, approached Jesus. Master, they said to him, we want you to do us a favour. He said to them, What is it you want me to do for you? They said to him, Allow us to sit one at your right hand and the other at your left in your glory. You do not know what you are asking Jesus said to them. Can you drink the cup that I must drink, or be baptised with the baptism with which I must be baptised? They replied, We can. Jesus said to them, The cup that I must drink you shall drink, and with the baptism with which I must be baptised you shall be baptised, but as for seats at my right hand or my left, these are not mine to grant; they belong to those to whom they have been allotted. When the other ten heard this they began to feel indignant with James and John, so Jesus called them to him and said to them: You know that among the pagans their so-called rulers lord it over them, and their great men make their authority felt. This is not to happen among you. No; anyone who wants to become great among you must be your servant, and anyone who wants to be first among you must be slave to all. For the Son of Man himself did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. The Gospel of the Lord. REFLECTION by Dianne Bergant CSS When we set out to follow Jesus, faithful to the promises that we made at baptism to renounce sin and live lives directed by the Spirit, we normally do so with generosity of heart. However, after we have borne the burdens of this decision and realise some of the implications of our commitment, we begin to wonder if it was worth it. We believe that God will generously bless us. Still, would it be so wrong to hope for a little more, especially if we have made significant sacrifices along the way? Of those to whom much has been given, much will be required in return. The closer we are to Jesus, the more we will be expected to mirror him. The great ones in the reign of God, the ones who exercise authority over others, must be the servants of the rest. Parents, teachers, civil authorities, managers of every kind, pastoral leaders must all be servants, as Jesus was a servant. We will also have to drink from his cup of suffering and be baptised into his death. As we draw close to the one who gave his life as an offering for sin, we will find that the same self-sacrifice is being asked of us. When we struggle with the misfortunes that we face because of our commitment to Jesus, we will have him as an inspiration and a model to follow. He can sympathise with our weaknesses, identify with our suffering. We can draw strength from his example and hope from his kindness.
