2 The Queen of Sheba visited the King of Israel to test him with hard questions. Solomon answered all her questions; there was nothing hidden from the king that he could not explain to her (1 Kings 10:1-3). I don t have all the answers and many times my responses are not to the satisfaction of the one bringing the question. My problem is not only that I am finite, but that I am fallible. Often I have to resort to the frank reply, I do not know. People have real questions. They have important and difficult questions about life and faith. In my years of Christian ministry, I have met countless people who are worried, angry, fearful and just plain confused. The challenge in attempting to answer those questions is that we might not have all of the answers. God, however, does not leave us in this precarious spot. In his mercy and tenderness he has condescended to speak with us, to teach us through his creation and his Word. Lucy and Linus are gazing out the window at a staggering downpour. Boy, look at it rain, Lucy says, fear etched on her face. What if it floods the whole world? It will never do that, Linus responds confidently. In the ninth chapter of Genesis, God promised Noah that would never happen again, and the sign of the promise is the rainbow. You ve taken a great load off my mind, Lucy says with a sigh of relief. Linus replies, Sound theology has a way of doing that! That is the aim of this summer s sermon series Questions and Answers: Practical Answers for Life s Tough Questions. Brandon and I are excited to begin this new series as we look to God s Word for practical answers and sound theology. So join us this summer and invite a friend for a little Q&A. Senior Pastor Johnny Mac
3 DAVID Worship beyond the song Have you ever been so overjoyed that you lifted your hands and shouted YEESSSS!? Have you ever been so overwhelmed that you were brought to tears? Have you ever been so happy that you found yourself doing a little jig? Now, I understand that I am probably only connecting with a few of you at this point. A handful of you who are reading this are saying, Absolutely, that is me! The rest of you show excitement much like my husband. His emotional pendulum doesn t swing quite as far as mine does. And that is ok! Nevertheless, God created all of us as emotional beings. We laugh. We cry. We shout. We dance. We grieve. We smile. We mourn. The same is true in our worship. As we understand who God is and who we are, we become emotional. Everyone who came face to face with the glory of God displayed emotion. One perfect example is described in 2 Samuel 6. David was bringing the Ark of the Covenant (the dwelling place of God on earth) back to Jerusalem. Here are the words used to describe David s worship response: celebrated, afraid, sacrifice, danced, rejoicing, shouts. As he was giving honor to God and putting the Ark in its proper place, David became emotional. He couldn t contain himself. This can be difficult in a society that has put tremendous value on science and less value on mystery. Yet, if we are going to worship biblically, it is important that we evaluate whether or not our response to God matches the response to the saints described in Scripture. Is your worship an emotional experience? Do you feel something when God s people gather together on Sunday mornings? In your quiet times alone with the Lord, are you stirred in your spirit? I am not saying you have to bust a move like David did. (Although, as one who likes to move in worship, I would encourage you to give it a try!!) However, I do challenge you to be vulnerable in His presence. When you allow God s Spirit to connect with your spirit, you will worship.beyond the song! Worship Pastor Holly Parks
4 Have you ever thought about what happened to people after they met Jesus? I mean, when they actually encountered him, talked to him, received a touch on the shoulder, were healed by him. How did they react? What did they do next? Did their 10-year plan change? So what happened? Their lives had new trajectories and new potential that would not have been possible without meeting Jesus. At Summer Blast, we know that kids encountered Jesus. We know for some it was the first time they made any type of commitment to Him. For others, they felt a renewed sense of relationship with Him. So what happens now? From people s actual encounters with the human Jesus, we know a little about what s next for so many of these kids. Just like the blind man who received sight (John 9), the woman who gave him a drink (John 4), or the ordinary guys who were his disciples, kids who encountered Jesus are set on a new path. They have a fresh direction for life that, without Christ, would not have been on their radar. They will never be the same. That is how incredible a single moment with Jesus can be. For so many kids this week, they had an eternity changing encounter with Christ. For those of you who were a part of Summer Blast, you played a role in introducing those kids to Jesus. Even if you only had passing moments with kids, you were (maybe literally) setting the table for other leaders to succeed. It was a special week. It was a life-changing week for many. Thank you volunteers. Your faithfulness opened doors, and your willingness to point kids to Jesus may have just changed their possibilities and direction forever. Children & Family pastor Devin Reed

8 THANK YOU CHURCH! Dear First Church, During a time like this we realize how much our friends and relatives really mean to us. Your expression of sympathy will always be remembered. The family of Evelyn Crawford First Church, Thank you so much for the flowers and Bibles. Dawn and I never had so many people touch our lives at one time. My earthly father is gone however my heavenly father is always beside us. Alan & Dawn Ramsey Dear First Church, Thank you for the lovely plant and 5 Gideon Bibles sent in Dad s memory. Dad worked tirelessly to help his church family in any way he could because he loved First Church and its mission to lead people to Christ. Thank you for your prayers and support during our loss. Thank you for providing the funeral luncheon for our large family. It meant so very much to all of us. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Maxine, Brenda, Dennis, Randy, & family First Church Family, Thank you for all the prayers and cards during this sad time in the loss of my Mom. You have cared for and loved us with meals, flowers, and the Bibles in Mom s name. Thank you so much! Church family is so important! Charlie & Lisa Richmond and family First Church, Thank you for the blue planter and the donation of Bibles in her name. The family of Burneida May Hodson Dear First Church, One year ago our house was destroyed by fire. What seemed like a terrible devastating blow to our family has turned out to be one of the biggest blessings we could have imagined. We were surrounded by so many friends, old and new. We also received so much anonymous support from friends that we may never be able to identify. We just wanted to take a moment to remember and again thank you all. May God bless each of you! The Kanagy Family To our family at First Church, From our entire board, thank you for the use of your facility for the cook off dinner. We are so encouraged by how you share what God has provided for the good of the Kingdom. We couldn t do what we do without you. Seth Nash for the Center Board First Church, Thank you for the planter and the 5 Bibles donated in our mother s name from the church. It is very much appreciated. Thank you also for all the thoughts and prayers sent. Randy & Melanie King, Dave & Jeanne Howell, Alan & Lynette Stultz Dear Church Family, Thank you so much for remembering me while I was in the hospital following my stroke. I so appreciated the prayers lifted for me and continue to covet your prayers as I continue my recovery in the weeks to come. Thank you. Sharon Lemon First Church of God, Thank you for the prayers that get me through the difficult chapters of my life. Thank you also for the Gideon Bibles in memory of my mom. When I was growing up the Family Bible was a safe place to keep important papers because no one ever looked in the Bible. During my mom s last year of life I was able to show her it s so much more than that! To God be the glory! Tracy Weigel and family
