3 Noah and the Ark Story (Based on Genesis 6:1 9:17) When God created the world it was a beautiful, perfect place. Then the first man and woman, Adam and Eve, disobeyed God. That brought sin into the world, and it was perfect no more. As the years went by, Adam and Eve had children and their children had children, and so on. More and more people were living on the earth and there was more and more sin. When God saw how sinful people had become, he was angry. What a mess they had made of His perfect world! Only one man in the whole world pleased God with his obedience. That man s name was Noah. One day God said to Noah, I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am going to destroy both them and the earth. Then God told Noah to build an ark, a huge boat. God gave him detailed instructions: The boat was to be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high with three decks. It was to be built of cyprus wood and coated with pitch, a substance that would make it water-resistant. Noah listened carefully to all that God told him. God had special plans for the big boat; He was going to use it to save Noah and his family in a worldwide flood. Noah and his wife, their three sons, and their wives would be the only people saved in the flood. Why did the boat have to be so big? Because God was not only going to save Noah and his family; He was also going to save two of every kind of animal He had created. The boat had to be big enough to hold eight people, two of every kind of animal, and plenty of food for the people and animals to eat for a whole year. Noah must have wondered about God s plan. It would take a whole lot of water to float a boat that big! But Noah did everything just as God commanded him. His neighbors must have laughed at him and made fun of him for doing such a silly thing, but rather than get upset, Noah preached to them, trying to warn them that they needed to turn to God before it was too late. But no one listened. He hammered and sawed and sweated and strained for days, weeks, and months. His sons probably helped him. It was an enormous job, but Noah finally finished the boat. (People in those days lived much longer than people today. Noah lived to be 950 years old.) God had told Noah to bring animals of every kind into the boat, two of each, a male and a female. How did Noah capture all those wild animals? Did he have to go running out into the woods and jungles after them? No, God told him that the animals would come to him, and that is just what happened. All Noah had to do was lead them into the ark, to the rooms that had been prepared for them. God did the rest. After all the animals were on board and Noah and his family had loaded all the food for themselves and the animals, God told Noah it was time to get on the ark. Noah and his family walked inside and God shut the door. Soon the rain began to fall. #7051 Bible Stories & Activities: Noah s Ark 4 Teacher Created Resources, Inc.
4 Noah and the Ark Story It rained harder than anyone could ever remember. The ground became soggy and puddles were everywhere. Then the puddles became shallow lakes and water began getting into people s houses. As the rain continued people had to move to higher ground, but the rain kept falling and the water inched up until even the highest hills and even the mountains were covered. For 40 days and nights it rained until everywhere you looked all you could see was water. The fish and water creatures loved it, but they were the only living creatures that survived the flood, except for those inside Noah s boat. Noah and his family and the animals in the ark were warm and dry and safe. Everything else on earth was under water. Noah had no idea where they were. He had no way to steer the ark. Where would they end up? How long would it take? He and his family trusted God to take care of them as they lived in the ark, feeding and caring for the animals. They did not know what was happening outside the ark, but they knew they were in God s hands. The earth was flooded for five months; then the water began to go down as God sent a wind to help dry things out. The huge boat stopped floating on the water and came to rest on a mountain. But it was not time for Noah and the others to leave the boat yet. It took a long time for the water to go down. Finally, the tops of the mountains could be seen sticking up through the water. One day Noah opened the window at the top of the boat and released a raven, a lar ge black bird. The strong bird flew back and forth looking for a place to land. Perhaps it rested on the mountaintops sticking out of the water. Since ravens can fly great distances and often eat dead animals, the bird was able to survive even though water still covered the ground. When the raven did not return to Noah, he released a dove. The dove flew around, but returned to the ark when it could not find a place to land or anything to eat. Noah waited a week, then he released the dove again. The dove flew back to him that evening with the green leaf from an olive tree in its beak! Noah realized that the water had gone down enough for the trees to start growing again. After another week, Noah sent out the dove again and this time it must have found a place to nest and food to eat because it did not return to him. Finally, God told Noah, Come out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and their wives. Bring out every kind of living creature that is with you. They had not set foot on dry ground for a year! How excited Noah and his family must have been! They all came out of the ark and looked around, happy to once again see grass and trees and sunshine. The first thing Noah did was to build an altar and sacrifice burnt of ferings to the Lord. It was Noah s way of thanking God for saving them all. God was pleased with Noah s offering and promised to never again destroy all life with a flood. As a sign of His promise God put a beautiful rainbow in the sky. From that time on, whenever it rained, Noah and the others did not need to be afraid that God was flooding the earth again, because they could see the rainbow and remember His promise. And they knew from experience that God always keeps His promises. Noah and his family had children and their children had children, and the earth became populated again. The animals that had been on the ark had babies and their babies grew up and had babies, and the animal population of the earth grew and grew. The earth was renewed but not perfect, for as long as there were people on earth there would still be sin. But instead of destroying the whole earth again, God had a different plan: to send His Son Jesus to the earth one day to die for people s sins. 5 Noah s Ark Bulletin Board 1. Cover the bulletin board with black paper or dark gray paper. 2. Print this verse on a strip of paper and mount it at the top of the board: Whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe. (Proverbs 29:25b) 3. Enlarge the ark pattern on page 7 to a size that will almost fill the board. Make two copies of it. 4. Color both copies of the ark. Mount one on the board. 5. Make eight copies of the person pattern on page 7. Color the patterns and make changes to them to make figures of Noah, his wife, their three sons, and their three wives. Cut out the figures and put them in the ark on the board. 6. Let students draw animals or cut them from nature magazines. They should try to get two of each animal. Put all the animals inside the ark on the board. 7. When you talk about the flood, mount the second copy of the ark on top of the first ark, closing in all the people and animals. 8. Have students cut raindrops from blue paper and attach them to the board everywhere. 9. Crush blue tissue paper and attach it to the bottom of the board for water. 10. When the rain is over remove the raindrops. As the water goes down, remove the tissue paper. 11. When you talk about the flood being over, remove the ark cover to reveal the people and animals. Use crepe paper or construction paper strips of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet to make a rainbow over the ark. #7051 Bible Stories & Activities: Noah s Ark 6 Teacher Created Resources, Inc.
