2 King s Messenger Pastor s Page April 1, 2018 I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. As noted in the theme for Sunday, April 22, it has come to be known as Good Shepherd Sunday. It is a hope filled and maybe even overly sentimental day, since we all remember cleaned up and cute Sunday School visions of shepherds. Let us not forget the hard work, dirtiness and danger that go with this image as well. Shepherds were a rough crowd maybe like our image of cowboys, which is why they were not trusted as witnesses in court or allowed in the temple. An interesting image of God that comes with the one who lays down his life, lied against, cast out, and finally killed by the wolves. He emerges victorious to shepherd us with the same ferocity of love and devotion. It is one thing to dress things up for our children, but it is another to miss the earthy power of the image, even as it is transformed by its association with God. God as shepherd, not only watches over us, but fights our enemies, rescues the lost and risks his life in all sorts of ways. This is not a God who is far off, but is among and with the sheep. The sheep need the reassurance of the voice, precisely because even a green pasture is surround by those who would wreak havoc among the sheep. I remember as a child being shocked by the news account of sheep attacked not by wild dogs, but pet dogs running loose, who ravaged a farmers sheep, leaving the dying and dead. I learned then that sheep are not good at protecting themselves. In that same way, we are not good at protecting ourselves or guiding ourselves through the ways of this world. We are more vulnerable than we wish to admit and therefore too proud to know better. Our shepherd is wise, devoted and active to watch over us and lead us where we need to go. This is reason to celebrate a God who is willing to be revealed in the image of the shepherd. Pastor Tim Adult Education Men s Bible Study, will finish with 2 nd Timothy and Titus. We meet every Saturday at 8:00 a.m. Come join us in reading and learning from some of Paul s most personal letters. We will finish the year with some topical studies. Women s Group continues Meeting on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. The group will be working on a bible study. Bible Study: Putting 1 Corinthians 13 in Its Place We all know some, if not all, of the words of 1 Corinthians: If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. or Love is patient, love is kind We hear these words at weddings all the time, but is that where they find the true meaning? We will spend 4 sessions together on Sunday mornings beginning on April 15 th during the Sunday School hour. Please sign up on the kiosk in the narthex.
3 Confirmation Classes Resume on April 4 th at 6:30 p.m. We resume meals and class for three weeks at our usual time. Meal is at 6:00 p.m. and class is at 6:30 p.m. Our final section of class will be the Lord s Prayer. Our last Wednesday is our annual Battle of the Congregations, held this year at Vogel Arena against our nemesis, Our Savior s. Yes you are expected to come and not leave your classmates hanging against superior numbers. Plus it is not good etiquette to refuse the invitation of Our Savior s. High School Youth are Invited to this Year s Battle of the Congregations, held this year at Vogel Arena against our Nemesis, Our Savior s The time will be the same for the event as always, 6:30 p.m. Come and help out, it will be the last event with Zach Hansen as well. So we can say goodbye to him as well. Worship Notes for April April 1 Easter Sunday at 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Readings and Psalm: Isaiah 25:6-9; Psalm 118:1-2, 14-24; 1 Corinthians 15:1-11; Mark 16:1-8 Theme: For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, 4 and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. On this April Fools Day we proclaim the message which was handed on to us, knowing that if it isn t true that Jesus was raised from the dead, we are fools. It is either the idle tale the disciples first thought it to be or it is the truth which brings life and immortality to light. God has determined the world s future an destiny in raising the Jesus who was crucified and buried. That is Good, Easter News! Come and Rejoice! April 8 Second Sunday of Easter Readings and Psalm: Acts 4:32-35; Psalm 133; 1 John 1:1--2:2; John 20:19-31 Theme: Today we gather with the disciples on the first Easter, and Jesus breathes the Spirit on us. With Thomas we ask for a sign, and Jesus offers us his wounded self in the broken bread. From frightened individuals we are transformed into a community of open doors, peace, forgiveness, and material sharing such that no one among us is in need. April 15 Third Sunday of Easter Readings and Psalm: Acts 3:12-19; Psalm 4; 1 John 3:1-7; Luke 24:36b-48 Theme: Jesus comes to his disciples in the flesh after he has been raised from the dead. Resurrection is still life in a body, with which we eat, drink, love and serve. This life is now preparation for that perfected life yet to come. Christ comes to bring healing to our broken bodies that they might be made whole. April 22 Fourth Sunday of Easter Readings and Psalm: Acts 4:5-12; Psalm 23; 1 John 3:16-24; John 10:11-18 Theme: I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. And so this Sunday has come to be known as Good Shepherd Sunday, a hope filled and maybe even overly sentimental day, since we all remember cleaned up and cute Sunday School visions of shepherds. Let us be led and comforted by our Good Shepherd. April 29 Fifth Sunday Easter Readings and Psalm: Acts 8:26-40; Psalm 22:25-31; 1 John 4:7-21; John 15:1-8 Theme: We will hear these words today: In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth. 34 The eunuch asked Philip, About whom, may I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else? 35 Then Philip began to speak, and starting with this scripture, he proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus. How are people born into the church? We worry about the future as we see so many leaving our churches. We forget that people are not born into faith. The new birth of faith comes through the good news about Jesus. This is your task, to know the message, or at least know where to point others that they might find Jesus.

Our Sunday School offering through May will be going to locally impact the Ivy House (Southern MN Crisis Nursery) in our community. The Ivy House (SMNCN) opened in New Ulm in 2017, with the purpose to provide 24-hour care for children ages 0-12 in a safe and loving environment while supporting families who are experiencing a stressful situation. Check it out at: We are also collecting new or gently used outside toys and activities for children ages 0-12 that go to the Ivy House. Ideas (not limited to): sidewalk chalk, bubbles, bug nets, toys to play with in a sandbox, toy sprinklers to play with in a yard, soft baseballs and mitts, different kinds of balls, plastic bat & ball sets, hula hoops, frisbees, jump ropes, foam pogo jumpers, stomp rockets, (kid size) outdoor plastic chairs, outdoor games If you are interested in donating other items that could be put to use such as a water play table, little tykes slide, and/or ball equipment pump, please let the office know. Extra envelopes to label with your child s name are in the bin if needed for checking out books. Your child will also have access to the library cart during Sunday School. We are creating a wish-list of good reads to add to our grades 4-6th collection. If you have any titles to share, please let Margo Becker know! Have fun reading and learning about faith in action together! Also " If you are interested in donating other items that could be put to use such as a water play table, little tykes slide, and/or ball equipment pump, please let the office know."-just fyi all, so we don't get doubles of these particular things.
