3 MISSIONS AND OUTREACH ONE GREAT DAY OF SERVICE :30 AM FRIENDSHIP COURT We are excited to serve with you during ODGOS 2018! Projects supporting Soupmobile, House of Amos, Houston Food Bank, Backpack Blessings, Memorial Assistance Ministries, Westside Homeless Partnership, Stop Hunger Now, Crosswalk Houston, Spring Branch and Alief Elementary Schools, and more are available for all ages to participate! Online registrations are open at mdumc.org/register. We look forward to involving many of you on our campuses as well as various ministries and nonprofits across the Houston area. Childcare provided for our little missioners. MEET OUR NEW DIRECTOR OF MISSIONS AND OUTREACH, KANDICE KIRBY Our new Director of Missions and Outreach is Kandice Kirby! She starts at MDUMC on March 1, and her office is in the Adult Ministries Center on the West Campus. She has been actively involved with our Young Adults, Missions, OGDOS, and many of our outreach projects over the last few years. When you see her make sure to stop her and welcome her to our staff! Introduce yourself to her and let her know of your passion and interest in Missions and Outreach. Welcome, Kandice! SOUPMOBILE Thank you to everyone who made donations during our SouperBowl of Caring Sunday! Your change and bills will help feed Houston s hungry. The Soupmobile Ministry provides over 2,000 meals every month to men, women and children in our community. All of this is made possible by your generous donations dropped in the soup pots on the first Sunday of each month throughout the year. This ministry depends on countless volunteers each week. If you want to help those in need, we are looking for more volunteers to help in the following ways: volunteer one Wednesday a month to pick up supplies from Sam s Club and deliver to the Scout Hut (about an hour of your time), volunteer to deliver a hot meal to St. James UMC on the 4th Sunday of the month for one month (or more), volunteer to deliver meals to Rose of Sharon and St. James UMC one Saturday each month. Everyone can support the Soupmobile ministry by praying for the volunteers and for the recipients of the meals, and filling the soup pots with change, bills, and checks on the 1 st Sunday of each month. For more information, contact Linda Linderman at linderman_ family@earthlink.net or KandiceKirby@mdumc.org. For more information contact RandyLee@mdumc.org. CROSSWALK HOUSTON UPDATE As Director of CrossWalk Houston, I have so enjoyed coming to Sunday school classes and various groups to update you on all that s happening at your local mission initiative. If I haven t had the opportunity to visit your class, please contact me to schedule your next availability. Recently, CrossWalk partnered with the Probers Sunday school class to host Dads & Donuts at Thornwood Elementary. It was a huge success! Many thanks to the Probers class for donating the donuts. I d love for your class or group to come together to host an event at Thornwood or CrossWalk Houston. There are lots of opportunities to take the love of Christ and MDUMC outside these walls and into our community. Thanks Sedonia Finstad Director of CrossWalk Houston SedoniaFinstad@mdumc.org THANK YOU, LIGHTEN UP Various ministries at MDUMC always reach out to give Thornwood Elementary much needed support. On a routine visit to the school, Linda Linderman discovered there was only one tattered soccer ball for all 5 grades to share during P.E. Linda put the need out to the Bible study she attends, Lighten Up, and within the week, each grade had an equipment bag filled with soccer balls, basketballs, footballs, and baseballs. Just one more story of being the church outside our walls and engaging Houston - thank you, Lighten Up MISSIONS TEAMS Looking for the trip of a lifetime? Join us on one of our 2018 mission trips. Sandra Roberson (shopper1220@gmail.com) will lead a group to Jamaica from July Marc Shellum (mcshellum@sbcglobal.net) will lead a group to Guatemala from July Elaine White (white6044@msn.com) will lead a trip to Cuba in 2018 probably late December / early January, so look for more information, and contact Elaine with any interest or questions. We look forward to serving with you this year! MAM HOME CARE CUPBOARD Throughout March, we will be collecting items for MAM s Home Care Cupboard for the families they serve in Houston. When a family turns to MAM for help with rent and utilities, the grocery budget is also diminished and home care supplies are often neglected. If you want to help, just purchase any of these items and place them in the collection bins around our campuses. At the end of the month, we will take the items to MAM. If you want to make a financial donation, we ll do the shopping for you. The items needed are as follows: Dishwashing liquid, all-purpose household cleaner, bars of soap, rolls of paper towels, 4-packs of toilet paper, and tissues. 2
