REMEMBERING HARVEY An intimate diary of struggles and darkness during Nouwen s hardest days. You ll want to pick it up, read, and let it simmer. SEDONIA FINSTAD This book does an exceptional job of using context and culture to show the impact and power of what Jesus said to an even greater degree. DR. JOHN ROBBINS God our Source, We give you thanks for the gift of this day, and for all the days that have passed since Hurricane Harvey came upon our shores one year ago. There have been days of hope and days of despair. There have been moments of light and moments of darkness. We give thanks that through all these moments, you have cared for us so that we can care for others. It s refreshing, but Claiborne means business. To take up your cross and follow Christ comes with a social price, but the reward is sweet. Jesus is worth it. These days have been challenging for so many among us. We pray for those for whom Harvey has made life more difficult, for lives where inequalities have been worsened, for lives where just getting by has been made more trying. REV. MICHAEL JARBOE STAFF PICKS This prayer has been adapted from liturgy provided by Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston. Know that as you pray these words, other families, small groups, and faith communities throughout Houston are lifting similar words of thanksgiving and petition to the God who creates and loves us all. Continue to open our hearts to listen to one another, to offer hospitality to friends in need, to offer shelter to the stranger in our midst, to be good stewards of the world in which we live. Give us rest from the long work of recovery; strengthen us so we can be strong for others. Help us to remember to be joyous in times of joy; lift us when our spirits fail. More than anything, give us an assurance of your presence. Let our faith in you and our faith in one another be a source of renewal. In the name of Christ, we pray. Anyone who is interested in learning more about intentional community and relationships should read this book. Amen. DREW ESSEN The Restoration Team A West Houston Network of Houston Responds We need this book now more than ever as it shows us what a loving conversation looks like between two people with completely different worldviews. REV. COLIN BAGBY Whether you were raised in the church or are currently encountering the Bible for the first time, you ll find something here to challenge and compel you. - REV GINNY GRIGGS TINCHER MDUMC has partnered with other local churches to own the long-term recovery process brought on by natural disasters. This network exists to engage our congregations in service to the most vulnerable populations that are at risk after suffering damage from a disaster event. There is a place for you to serve either as a volunteer, or in a leadership role. If you would like more information on how you can be a part of this team, please contact KandiceKirby@mdumc.org, or visit mdumc.org/missions.

This is a place where you can feel at home among friends, a place you go to check in on your weekly walk with God, a place to find shelter and rest from the busyness of life. Home Groups meet at the same time and place every week in order to build relationships with one another and grow closer to God. Ideal group size is 8-15 people and groups are usually made up of a mixture of ages and life stages. We hope the following Q&A helps you to understand more about Home Groups at MDUMC, and we re always available to answer any other questions you may have. WHO ARE THESE GROUPS FOR? Home Groups are open to anyone church members, visitors, neighbors, even people who have never been to any church! The groups will be especially good for anyone at MDUMC who has not yet found their tribe. In other words, if you are craving a sense of belonging and community, this is a great way to find it. HOW WILL THIS HELP ME GROW IN FAITH? Structuring our Home Groups around this question How is your life in God? might seem odd. But the very act of asking that simple question on a weekly basis in the presence of like-minded friends causes you to pay more attention to your spiritual formation. It becomes a practice that the Holy Spirit can use to drastically change your life. WHAT DO HOME GROUPS DO? Groups meet for an hour and a half, once a week. The first half of the meeting is a time of guided discussion. For the first 2 months, groups will read and discuss The Class Meeting by Kevin Watson. The book explains a lot of the why and how behind these groups. After the book study is complete, groups will be guided in discussion based on sermons from the previous Sunday. In the second half of the meetings we ll each engage the question, How is your life with God? Our meetings begin and end with prayer and snacks are highly encouraged. WHY SHOULD I GIVE THIS A CHANCE? We are not created to do life alone. We all need people that we can trust with our stories and who can help us listen for God s guidance in our lives. The best way for us to be more like Jesus Christ is to gather with his people and share the journey together. We re committed to helping you find a group that feels like home. MDUMC Home Group ministry exists to create ever-expanding circles of belonging where God s love and grace are communicated and lives are transformed. If you re ready to join a group, or if you d just like more information, contact Rev. Jennifer Veres- Schrecengost at JenniferVS@mdumc.org. 7

Checks can be made out to MDUMC with Backpack Blessings on the memo line. For additional information or to volunteer, please contact Barbara Calhoun at bbcalhoun5@gmail.com. Thirty-five minutes was all it took. That was the time of our Florida-leg flight to Havana which would change our team s perspective from simple acceptance to an experience full of complex impressions and a love of new friends. One common thread between Methodist church members in Cuba and our team was a love of sharing Christ s teachings and singing the Lord s praises. We, in our naïvety, went to share tangible gifts of over-the-counter medical items, building tools, sewing supplies, financial donations and energy for our shared projects. We returned changed with hearts full of special memories. From a Sunday visit to a local Havana Methodist Church where we participated in an energetic and music-filled service to a week s stay in Cienfuegos assisting in the pouring of concrete, laying tile, sewing lessons and worshiping - our hearts were opened to appreciate the Cuban congregations spirit of love. Yes, we came home with much more than we gave. We connected with love and respect for one another and each other s cultures. We connected to Methodist pastors and church members. We connected spiritually as a team with a common mission of serving with our brothers and sisters in Christ, regardless of nationality. Whether or not you are able to serve on a specific mission to Cuba (which we hope you will be), remember those on the ground there working to share Christ s message of love for all. The Cuban Methodist Church history from 1898 to the present is one which we can all appreciate and continue to support with our prayers and service. ELAINE WHITE CUBA TEAM LEADER _ To learn about how you can join us in Cuba from January 26 - February 2, contact Elaine White at white6044@msn.com. Missioner spots are still available, but time is running out to be a part of this team - register soon! Our hearts were opened to appreciate the Cuban congregations spirit of love. Yes, we came home with much more than we gave. 9
