February 2018 There will be a special offering taken on February 4 th for the New Brethren Haitian & Spanish Congregations and support for the Church of the Brethren in the Dominican Republic. We will be hosting the Southern Cove Ministerium Ash Wednesday Service here at the Woodbury Church of the Brethren on Wednesday, February 14 at 7:00 p.m. Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the Season of Lent. The anointing with ashes has long been seen as a way to express humility, repentance and seeking God more fully in our lives. It s a good way to begin focusing our hearts and minds on the events to come during Holy Week, and the Easter celebration. 2 We will be welcoming Teen Challenge here during our morning worship service. We look forward to hearing what the Lord is doing in this ministry. February 11 th 6:30 The only way to truth is through facts, says Chicago Tribune legal affairs reporter Lee Strobel. Facts are our greatest weapon against superstition, against ignorance and against tyranny. Lee declares himself an atheist because we only believe in what s real, what we can see and touch. His life is turned upside down when his wife faces a near death experience and through the help of a new friend, starts to question the existence of God. So Lee begins a quest to disprove his wife s new beliefs, but he finds something much different than what he was looking for. 3 I Will Be Joyful! Famous last words from my January 2018 Newsletter Article: I am excited for the month of January, I think it will much more than just the month after Christmas. I think God has set before us a great way to break in the New Year! OK, OK. I wasn t expecting frigid cold temperatures. I wasn t anticipating three funerals and an additional death affecting the church family in the first two weeks. I didn t know the Village would be quarantined due to the flu. And I certainly wasn t looking forward to a sinus infection that has now officially surpassed the week mark. But we still met regularly and worshiped together. We installed new Deacons. We still dedicated our 2018 Leadership, and we still had our Renewal Service for the Body of Christ. Other good things have been happening as well, and the foundation has been laid for more good things to come, like dedicating three young lives on February 11, and a service of baptism to come. What happens to our joy and our view of God s faithfulness when unanticipated and unappreciated events invade our expectations? Is our joy tied to the situations around us? Is our view of God determined by our limited view of our current circumstances? The psalmist writes: For the word of the LORD is right and true; He is faithful in all he does. The LORD loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love. Psalm 33:4-5 (NIV84) Circumstances notwithstanding, God is faithful, righteous, just and loving in all He does. A truly amazing passage is found in Habbakuk 3:17-19 (NIV84): Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior. The Sovereign LORD is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to go on the heights. The writer describes a situation of devastation and seeming hopelessness, yet he declares I will rejoice, I will be joyful, the Sovereign Lord is my strength. So whatever January has brought, whatever February may bring, we can be joyful. The Lord is faithful and He is our strength. Pastor David Looking for more meaningful friendships? If you have your kids in Sunday School, why not stay yourself! You might find that it is just what you need! 6 Nigeria Crisis Response Celebrates Work and Achievements of food distributions to 75 to 250 families at each distribution. 3,600 families received seeds, and 1,800 families received fertilizer, in 29 districts of EYN and 2 relocation villages. 1,664 orphans and vulnerable children assisted through independent learning centers, school fees, and fulltime care. 472 women helped with businesses and empowered to care for themselves, through seminars, literacy programs, and cash start-ups. 16 medical responses to groups of 400 to 950 people at a time. 50-plus communities involved in a joint soy beans project of EYN, the Illinois-based Soybean Innovation Lab, and the Global Food Initiative of the Church of the Brethren. Agricultural trainings held in Kenya with Farming God s Way, and an ECHO training in Nigeria. 2 tractors purchased and put in use in the Kwarhi and Abuja areas. 9 people participated in a peace training in Rwanda through Turning the Tides of Violence. 10 workshops for peace and trauma healing were held at various locations, including training of Listening Companions at the local level. Real-time evaluation conducted of the EYN disaster work, and a Tripartite meeting was held. An EYN Solar Powered Internet café was put in place 100 homes destroyed by Boko Haram received new roofing. Building projects including the Kwarhi Medical Clinic, new offices for EYN, and roofing of a classroom at Kulp Bible College. 10 new water sources including one at the EYN relocation camp in Maiduguri. Assistance to the area of Numan following an attack by Fulani herdsmen. Shipment of a container of books and distribution of books to children s schools and EYN Bible schools. Assistance for the medical bills of one of the Chibok schoolgirls who has been released from captivity. *Picture and article taken from Brethren News Line* A Nigerian Woman receives a bag of food at a distribution from the Nigeria Crisis Response. There are some fundraisers in the works for our Relay for Life Team. We will keep you posted, so watch for more details to come!

7 Youth Follow us on The youth will be participating in the Middle PA Youth Volleyball Tournament on March 17 th. Sign ups and permission slips are due to Director Dave by February 25 th. Looking Ahead.. NYC will be held July 21 st 26 th. This is for students currently in 9th grade through 1 year post high school. See Director Dave for details. The Youth will be getting new tee shirts, and anyone that is interested may see Director Dave to order! More details to come. F.R.O.G. Time meets the first and third Wednesdays of the month at 6:30. All children Pre-k through 5 th grade are invited! Come out and have some fun! We would love to see you!

8 News Our Women s Fellowship will not be having a regular meeting in February. Instead, we will be having our Ladies Retreat! It will be Friday and Saturday, February We will arrive at the Camp Blue Diamond in the evening on Friday and have our meal together. Then, we will play games and do other fun activities, who knows what we might get into! It is always lots of fun and a great time to bond with other women. On Saturday, we will have a brunch and some other activities. You are free to leave whenever you want, there isn t a specific schedule. We hope you may consider joining us! See Joyce or Karen to sign up. Space is limited! Saturdays at 8am at the Community center to walk through scripture to find peace in the present, and hope for the hereafter. Come early for coffee. Come out for a time to connect with other men.
