1 Tidings from the Woodbury Church of the Brethren Helping people to know God as revealed in His fullness through Jesus Christ and responding to God and mankind in love and service. December 2018 Pastor David will begin a series of Advent messages on Sunday, December 2 nd and continuing through Sunday morning December 23 rd. They are as follows: Dec. 2 nd - The Anticipation of Christmas Dec. 9 th - The Reality of Christmas Dec. 16 th - The Gift of Christmas Dec. 23 rd - The Sacrifice of Christmas Our hope is that these messages will enable you to emerge from this Advent season with a deeper, fuller sense of Jesus presence in your life. Children s Christmas Program Sunday, December 16 th 6:00pm Drive to Bethlehem A Drive-Thru Living Nativity At Woodbury Church Of the Brethren Saturday, Dec. 8 5:30-8:30 In the church parking lot Come and see the Bible s Christmas story unfold from the comfort of your car! Complete with shepherds, angels, wise men and live animals that lead you to the manger scene! Cancelled for extreme weather There s still time to sign up to help! Angels Say What? Come see the Christmas Story from the perspective of the angels! The service project this Advent Season will be Mealson-Wheels. The money we collect will assist in providing hot meals to local shut-ins in our community. There will be a collection box in the narthex Sunday, Nov. 25 th through Dec. 23 rd. December 24 th at 7:00pm Adult Choir will sing Join is singing Christmas carols Brief Christmas message The service will conclude with the singing of Silent Night by candlelight. An offering will be taken for our local Salvation Army Unit to help families in our area.

2 The Village at Morrison s Cove Birthday Party Thurs. December, 6 th at 5:15 Join us in the dining room to visit with residents and serve coffee and cake. You may play the piano or sing, if you would like. Children are especially welcome. We will give gifts to the residents with December birthdays. Items include tissues, combs, brushes, emery boards, pens, pencils, note pads, lip balm, socks, large print word searches, etc. Please place these in the box in the narthex. The Village at Morrisons Cove Auxiliary Christmas Cards If you would like to bring your Christmas cards for those in our church family, please bring them by December 16 th so there is time for them to be distributed. Please have them sorted in alphabetical order and banded together so they can be easily distributed. Each family will be assigned a bag with your name on it. Please remove your cards and leave your bag so we can reuse them next year. Only include cards for our regular attenders, other cards can be mailed. There will be a box in the narthex to place your cards. Annual Christmas Cookie Sale Friday, December 14 th, :00pm until Sold Out In the Activities Hall $12.00 Large Container $6.00 Small Container You can also make cookies or candy to donate for sale. 3 Anticipation An-ti-ci-pa-tion. An-ti-ci-pa-tion. It s makin me late. It s keepin me wai-a-a-a-atin. I think that s how the song went, Carly Simon or someone like that. Can you tell I m past the double nickel. It seems to me that anticipation is a very big part of the observance of Christmas. There always seems to be a great deal of anticipation or looking forward to the events surrounding the celebration. What is it that we look forward to? Maybe it s the shopping. It s hard for me to believe, but some people actually enjoy fighting the crowds to track down those precious Black Friday bargains, and find the perfect tie to hang in the back of dad s closet. (Truthfully, I ve gotten some very nice ties for Christmas.) Maybe it s the presents. Everyone likes to receive and open gifts. It s fun to get nice presents. It s a hassle to return them. Maybe it s getting together with friends and family. That s always a great time of fellowship and catching up on details of each other s lives. As our families grow, it s harder to accomplish, and even more important. Maybe it s the lights and decorations. Things sure look nice at Christmas time with lights twinkling and reflecting off the clean white shine of a new snowfall. The decorations dress up our homes, the church and the town of Woodbury, putting us in a festive spirit. Maybe it s time off from work and school. How much time do you kids get off now anyway? Back when I was a kid... We call the period including the last four Sundays before Christmas Advent. It s from the Greek meaning to come. It s in anticipation of someone coming, Jesus Christ Himself. But didn t He already come, a long time ago? Yes He did. Yet each year when we celebrate Christmas, it s almost like He comes again. We have a special opportunity to allow Him to be born in our hearts anew, almost like the first time He entered this world, like the first time He was born in our hearts. We can start all over again with Him. It s also a great time to allow Him into our hearts for the very first time. Not just as the Baby Jesus of Christmas, but as the Lord and Savior of all, the Lamb who takes away the sins of the world. Why not let Him come into your life as we celebrate His coming into this world? Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and give birth to a Son, and will call Him Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14, NIV84) Make sure that your anticipation of Christmas includes the One who came, and the One who keeps on coming again and again into the hearts of those who seek Him. 6 We are always looking for teachers and helpers for the Kids WOW and Kids WOW 2k. The material we are using is easy to use and requires little preparation. Please consider thinking about how you could help out in our children s ministry. See Director Dave if you are interested.. Messenger Renewal Please contact the church office by December 16 th if you need to make changes to your Messenger subscription, whether to start or stop a subscription. If no changes are needed, no action is necessary. ( ) Christmas White Gift Tree Be watching for the Christmas White Gift Tree to be in the narthex. The trees have Christmas balls on them that display a need for a child with the age and size needed. These items are given to families that may have extra needs this Christmas. The gifts will be due back on December 16th. Our congregation donated 93 boxes total to Operation Christmas Child! Thank you for your generosity! Thanks to Richard and Cindy for delivering them for us! The F.O.C.A.S. Sunday school class will be delving into a new video series, beginning Sunday, December 2 nd. If you are not currently a part of a Sunday School class, we d like to invite you to come learn about a topic that we already attending this class know little about. What comes to your mind then you think of heaven? Clouds? Harps? Angels? Singing? Now, honestly, does that sound like a good way to spend eternity? The good news is,that is NOT what heaven is like. And when you discover what really awaits you there, it will radically change your view of heaven. In this video series from Living on the Edge, Chip Ingram digs into scripture to reveal what our heavenly home will be like, what we ll do there, what we ll experience, and how we re to prepare for eternity today. If you secretly thought that heaven sounded kind of boring, well, think again. In this series, you will discover the amazing truth of what awaits you there.

7 Youth Follow us on Kidz Konnect will be learning about How to Be Generous. Bring your child out on Wednesday nights to be involved in this study and to have fun! There will be no Kidz Konnect Dec. 19th or 26th. We will be back to our normal schedule on Jan. 2nd. The Youth Christmas Party is set for Sunday, December 16th from noon till 1:30. There will be Christmas games, snacks and selfies with Santa! Everyone is asked to bring your favorite Holiday snack to share. See Director Dave with any questions! December 30th Please remember that the children will be practicing for the Children s Program on Wednesday evenings at 6:00pm with Kidz Konnect ending at 7:30 and Sundays during Sunday school. No sign up Needed! Women s Fellowship Donated 32 Boxes for Operation Christmas Child!! Thanks Ladies!! 2 Chicken Breasts-cut in slices Salsa Packet of Taco Seasoning ½ c. Shredded sharp cheddar cheese 2T. Flour Put taco seasoning and flour in plastic bag. Place chicken in the bag and shake until covered. Place chicken in a greased pan and cover with salsa and ½ c. shredded cheese. Bake at 350 for 30 min.
