1 MEMO MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF MEMORIAL CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN AUGUST 2016 From Pastor Joel s Desk... Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. James 1:12 The volunteers will be here next Thursday to put the Memo together and mail it. This is the final warning our secretary, Amy, gives me every month. Loosely translated it means, You can t procrastinate this any longer; I need your front page article Now. I ve been writing pastor s pages for over thirty years and I ll let you in on a secret: it never gets any easier. I struggle with getting an idea and then labor making the idea come to life. There s a word for this. Perseverance. Pushing through the sometimes tedious, often times difficult in order to achieve a desired goal or result. Paul says perseverance produces character. If that s true, a lot of us have character. Planting a garden in the spring and seeing it through the harvest takes perseverance. Waiting on a delayed answer to prayer takes perseverance. Remodeling a bathroom? Perseverance. Waiting for biopsy results? Going through radiation and chemo? Mending fences in a relationship? Playing for the Curve while waiting for the Pirates to call you up? All require getting through the going through stage before any desired result appears. Paul, who spent as much of his ministry in prison as he did out planting churches, said that in all of that he pressed on to take hold of the prize (the goal) that God had called him heavenward. So now I ve written another pastor s page and I like the result. In what area of your life are you needing a little perseverance? Don t give up just yet. With a little help from the Father, you are closer to your goal than you think! Joel COMING BACK CHURCH ON THE LAWN August 7, 14, 21, 28 & September 4 An informal early service will be held on the east lawn (beside the parking lot) of the church. Dress casual. Bring a lawn chair and some church chairs will be provided as well. 8:15 9:00 a.m. +In case of rain, worship will be held in the sanctuary.

2 Leadership Team Minutes July 12, 2016 The meeting was called to order by Paul Longwell at 7:00 p.m. Devotions and a prayer were shared by Doris Reighard. The agenda was approved as presented by consensus with the addition of DVD Ministry under New Business. The minutes from the June 7, 2016 LT meeting were approved by consensus. REPORTS OF PASTOR AND OFFICERS All written reports are attached and become a permanent part of the minutes. PASTOR No report MODERATOR No report LT CHAIR: Paul Longwell reported live streaming on the website should be functioning in August. Amy Bean would appreciate feedback about the website. Alan M. will place a red emergency box around the new shut off switch outside the basement boiler room. New tax assessment notice reflects a net decrease of $438 An unused electric meter was removed because it was outdated, unused and costing $13.00 per month. The insurance company did not have suggestions for step safety. They did suggest Joe Keith measure the step height. He will do that this week and report to Carolyn. VBS props are still looking for a home. Larissa Caporuscio said a church in Roaring Spring may be interested. Kathie Nogle shared that she learned at Annual Conference many churches struggle to offer VBS. In the future, it might be nice to share VBS materials throughout the denomination by connecting with a church in need. There will also be time during the beginning of worship to complete the assessment. The completed assessments will be deposited in a box and sent directly to Dave Steele for his review 2. Accounting and Financial Services Paul Longwell gave an update of the status of Accounting and Financial Services since the June LT Meeting. Paul L. met with David Hagstrom to discuss concerns. 7 From Your Steward... Hi Everyone, This is my Fourth Message for the 2016 Giving. If you look at the Budgeted Giving Comparison you will see that our Budget Giving for 2016 is $14, more than Our Total Overall 2016 Giving is also more by $8,271 compared with Both of these giving figures are excellent. The Deacon Assistance Fund is ahead of last year at this time by $161. This is much too close for comfort. We need to increase our Deacon Assistance Giving. The Deacons are receiving many requests for assistance this year. They will continue to need your support in 2016, so that we have sufficient funds available for those less fortunate. Even though it has been a mild winter, there are still many requests coming in for assistance in other areas of need. The Food Bank Donations have dropped behind last year at this time by $514. We need to turn this around. Hopefully this will not adversely affect our neighbors in need, so that some would go hungry during the coming months. This is the second time that I have had to ask for a more favorite outcome in our Food Bank Giving. The Heifer International Project has good news since my last message. The 3 rd, 4 th, 5 th & 6 th Sunday School Class has collected $ and the congregation has added $3, The Children s Sunday School Class set a goal to buy a heifer this year which costs $500. This means that they have already met their first goal. They are off to a great start. Maybe they will be able to buy 2 Heifers at this rate. We as a Congregation have never set a goal for this year. What do you think the goal should be? I haven t heard from anyone. The donations from the Sue Stoudnour and Friends Concert raised $1, for the Heifer International Project. Great job to Sue and her Friends. Heifer International is such a great way to globally help those less fortunate in other countries. It is not just a handout; it is a way to change a person, family and a whole village. You should read some of the heartwarming stories in the World Ark Publication that is available in the Church Narthex. Please continue to support this important outreach giving project. We have received donations totaling $3,365 for the Acorn Cove Project at the Memorial Park so far. Way to go. We are anxiously waiting to hear from the Facility Review Team on the second phase of their review on recommendations on how to meet the deficiencies in our church building and how to meet the current needs and future ministries of this Congregation. I am sure there will soon be new challenges lurking around the corner for our congregation to tackle. I will continue to keep you abreast of our giving challenges during the year. Your financial support and talents of time will ensured that all of our 2016 church ministries are successful. We will be looking for your continued support during the year. May the love of Jesus continue to bless you and the ones you love. Your Stewardship Voice Darrell Smith Stewardship Report as of July 17, 2016 Budget giving for the first 29 weeks of the last three years is as follows: , , , Total giving for the first 29 weeks of 2016 compared to 2015 is as follows: Budget Giving 173, , Building Fund Deacon Fund 3, , Memorial Fund 3, , Food Bank 3, , Missions Youth Ministries Credits 11, , Backpack Program 2, One Great Hour of Sharing 1, Acorn Cove-Memorial Park 3, Projector Donation 4, NYC Fund 1, Silent Auction-NYC 2, Heifer Int.--Children & Congregation 1, , Souper Bowl , Other Miscellaneous 6, , Total 213, ,116.45
