3 FOREWORD Bishop Helen-Ann Hartley 3 Tikanga Youth Liaison Bishop For any church to be relevant it must listen carefully to all that surrounds it and enfolds it. We listen firstly to God, inspired by the Holy Spirit and following the example of Jesus. Each person is made in the image of God, and each person has much to contribute as we engage in God s mission together. The church needs to both listen to the voices of our youth and to enable those voices to actively shape our engagement in the many communities of which we are part, and with those who don t feel they belong. It s a cliché perhaps to say that we were all young once, but that is true for each of us, regardless of our age. When I think back to all those people who said yes to me when I was a young person, and who encouraged me, without those voices, I would not have chosen to commit my whole life to following Jesus, and to being faithful to that call to go wherever it would take me, even to the ends of the earth! Of course, we aren t really the ends of the earth here in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia. We are in fact the centre of the earth! Our task is to build a Kingdom that is fully inclusive and reflective of the rich tapestry of all God s people, and here in the Youth Commission, we seek to do just that in an unreasonably hospitable way! So what are we waiting for? Let s begin and say yes to God s call to engage with all our youth! 4 WHAT IS THE TIKANGA TORU YOUTH COMMISSION? Working to fulfil the vision for 3T Youth Ministry, the Commission and Commissioner occupy the space between Tikanga and: Encourage us to talk with and support each other. Support resourcing, events and education. Speak up about young people and youth ministry across the Church. Our Kaupapa Discipling young people to be Christ-centred in our Three-Tikanga Church. Our Values In this season, the Youth Commission is guided by and seeks to exemplify the following values: 1. We exercise unreasonable manaakitanga; not only are you welcome, but we re committed to bridging any obstacle that stands in the way of us being together in Christ. 2. We work at high trust relationships; we are committed to speaking the truth in love, being open, honest, and vulnerable. 3. We listen to each other s talanoa; together we have a thousand stories, of who we ve been, who we are and who we will be of God and God s action. Every story, no matter the inconvenience of hearing or telling it, is important. 4. We operate with creativity and imagination; we have deep roots but we are not shackled to old ways of doing things. We are committed to asking, time and again, What new work is God doing? 5. We aspire to be edge-walkers; as God goes before us all, we are committed to embracing our calling to go to those on the margins and beyond. 4

7 Make the first move Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well. 1Thessalonians 2:8 The most effective way to get young people living Christcentred lives is to live that life ourselves and to share that life, in intentional relationships, one-on-one with young people, indeed, with young disciples. Young people need someone willing to share their lives with them and to walk alongside them. Someone to make the first move. Make the First Move: A Practical Resource for Mentoring Young People is designed to make mentoring easy to stress its importance, give some simple answers to common questions, and provide you with the know-how and confidence to make the first move and get involved. 7

8 Every moment is the right moment Christ chose some of us to be missionaries, pastors, and teachers, so that his people would learn to serve and his body would grow strong. Ephesians 4:11-12 Often we feel like we have to wait for the right moment before allowing young people to have a go. If you re waiting for the right moment to include and involve young people there is no right moment; every moment is the right moment to include young people, to make way for young people to be involved and contribute to the life of this church. Every Moment is the Right Moment for Doing Theology Where You Are: A Practical Resource for Doing Theology is an easy to follow guide to doing theology to help you to think a little more deeply about God in relation to you, where you are, and the issues with which you are faced. In this resource you will find several methods or ways of doing theology from Pākehā, Māori and Pasefika contexts. 8

9 Because it matters Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 2 Corinthians 9:6 Young people and youth ministry is a stated priority in every Tikanga of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia. This is awesome! We all know that if we want our youth ministries to succeed we must resource them, provide training for their leaders and give of our time and talents; a lived mentality of providing on-going support for those ministering with young people. As part of the Network of National Youth Ministry Leaders, the Tikanga Toru Youth Commission has helped to design Sustainable Practices for Youth Ministry a straightforward resource that will lead you through making 7 key commitments to your Youth Worker or Lead Volunteer Youth Leader to ensure a sustainable and successful youth ministry. 9

13 Archbishop Brown Turei Kei whakahāwea tētahi ki a koe, he taitamariki nōu; engari hei tauira koe ki te hunga whakapono, tāu kupu, tāu whakahaere, tōu aroha, tōu whakapono, tōu ngākau mā. Let no man despise your youth; but be an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.1 Timothy 4:12 Being young is not just a time in life, it is a state of mind one that our Haahi needs to nurture from generation to generation. The best way to do this is nurturing rangatahi and tamariki: in our churches, alongside us in mission, and beside us in service and as kaiarahi as we follow Te Karaiti and learn and grow together. It is vital that all our leaders work together, kaumatua and tamariki mokopuna. Our rangatahi are already capable of being examples of faith, word, conversation, charity, spirit, faith, and purity. That s why it s so important that rangatahi leadership is never despised, it should be honoured and included fully in all levels of the church. In Tikanga Māori we have a saying: Tuia te here tangata Weave together all the strands of our people. We weave ourselves together through prayer, and through sharing and hospitality. I commend this directory to you as a resource for more than just staying in touch, I commend it to you as another way to start weaving meaningful and trust-worthy relationships with each other in Christ Jesus. Under the leadership of Ana Sciascia, Doc Ferris and pakeke such as Piri Sciascia and Don Hutana, we performed the oriori E Tipu E Rea composed by Te Wi o Te Rangi of Ngati Hinetewai. This taonga illustrates how critical it is to impart knowledge in order to instigate maturity and growth within rangatahi a practice fundamental to the survival of any kaupapa. The words E Tipu E Rea describe the activity we are called to support in our youth ministry as Kaiwhakaako Rangatahi. In other words, we exist to help rangatahi become what they have been called to be so that they may fulfill God's purpose in their life. Our mission for Tairawhiti is to cultivate self determination among rangatahi that fosters intergenerational contribution to their communities. In faith, we serve to protect, guide and provide opportunities for rangatahi to reach their potential within their whanau, hapu and iwi. The role of Kaiwhakaako Rangatahi is to support the development and growth of a new generation of leaders to achieve God's purpose in their life for the betterment of their whanau, hapu and iwi. 17 Archbishop Philip Richardson When I was confirmed by the Bishop of Auckland, Bishop Eric Gowing as a 12 year old I was in a group with some fifty others. These numbers quickly dwindled and I would most likely have drifted away as well had it not been for the gentle mentoring and friendship of some adults in my church including our vicar. I was given a place and a role as an altar server and then at 16 I was invited by the Parish AGM to join Vestry even though at that time you had to be 18 to be a member. At each step in my early years I was made to feel valued, encouraged in all my endeavours including my faith, I was taken seriously and made to feel that I had a contribution to make. The wide variety of ministries with and by our children and young people across Tikanga Pākehā and our whole Church is inspiring. There is fantastic energy, innovation and creativity. It can be found in large urban Churches and in tiny struggling rural communities. There are congregational children, family and youth programmes and initiatives as well as innovative community based initiatives working with some of our society s most vulnerable. Any thing that helps support and network those involved in this important work is to be encouraged. I welcome and commend this directory and pray that it will strengthen our mission together in Christ s name. 25 Archbishop Winston Halapua Moana Children s Ministry The commitment of the Diocese of Polynesia to Moana Children s Ministry is central in our Diocesan Strategic Plan. The curricula for Christian Education of Primary Schools of the Diocese in Tonga, Samoa and Fiji are well established. Teachers who are Anglican and from a variety of faith traditions are enabled with regular in-service training. The Teachers are enthusiastic about this opportunity to deepen their understanding of the Christian faith and prepare to share that understanding. A new Curricula Committee of the Diocese of Polynesia comprising members from American Samoa, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji and our Tikanga in New Zealand will be set up to begin work in the year Lotu Youth Mission Community The able leadership and the contribution of young people is visible and celebrated in Tikanga Polynesia, in our Church and around the world. One of our young leaders is a member of the Anglican Consultative Council, young people serve at General Synod, its Standing Committee, on our Diocesan Synod and its Standing Committee and on Vestries throughout Tikanga Polynesia. It is our policy that young people are represented and supported across the board. This simply reflects the fact that young people make a vital contribution to leading and energising our common mission. The contribution of our young people is essential in the life and mission of our Three Tikanga Church and it is important that we actively know who they are and where they are so we can all get on board with our common mission too.
