Counselor s Corner by Rev. Rolf Preus, Senior Counselor The LWML supports Lutheran Church Charities (LCC). LCC exists to share the Mercy, Compassion, Presence and Proclamation of Jesus Christ to those who are suffering and in need. They are well known for the comfort dogs they provide to bring comfort to people who are suffering. Amazing! Dogs who preach the Gospel! Who would have thought of such a thing! No? They don t preach? They do what? Oh, I get it. They comfort. That s why they call them comfort dogs. They comfort. The comfort they provide is non-verbal, of course, because they cannot verbalize anything inasmuch as they are dumb animals, unable to speak. But they do provide comfort. This, dear friends in Christ, is how language is twisted. The result is confusion. After the massacre in Orlando, Florida last summer, the LCC website featured the LCC sharing the comfort provided in Orlando by their comfort dogs, followed by the words, Please pray for their families. Isaiah 40:1 Comfort ye, comfort ye my people. Comfort dogs and the comfort of Isaiah 40 are related how? The word comfort is used for both in the very same context without any distinction made. So then, what is the comfort of the Gospel? How does this comfort of the Gospel differ from the comfort of dogs? I admit. I don t like dogs. I don t derive a positive feeling from having a dog in my presence. If I were suffering a terrible loss, I don t think I would want a dog around. But I know many dog lovers. Even if I were a dog lover, whatever comfort I could derive from a dog s presence has nothing to do with the comfort I get from the Comforter through the proclamation of the Gospel. The one kind of comfort is purely emotional. It is of no spiritual benefit. It is as comforting to those who in unbelief hold onto their sins, refuse to repent, and are heading toward hell as it is to those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, trust in Jesus for their salvation, and have eternal life through faith in Jesus. Yes, but aren t we to provide food and clothing for those in need and isn t this a bridge toward sharing the Gospel with them? Can we regard comfort dogs in the same way? They provide emotional support even as more traditional forms of aid provide physical support? We refer to the provision of food and clothing as a ministry of mercy. Therefore we can refer to providing comfort dogs as a ministry of mercy. Neither are adequate for the spiritual comfort that only the Gospel can provide, but both serve the purpose of preaching the Gospel by building relationships, breaking down barriers, and providing a climate of trust in which the uniquely Christian task of bringing the comfort of the Gospel to people in need of a Savior can take place. Right? Ah, but it doesn t work that way. Confusion is engendered by using the word comfort to refer both to the emotional benefit allegedly provided by comfort dogs and to the spiritual comfort provided by the Gospel. This confusion is inevitable. Sinners by nature look within themselves for spiritual guidance. This is why there is so often a confusion of emotional feelings with spiritual impulses. We should do everything we can to distinguish between faith and feeling. The confusion is compounded by the persistent reference to the use of comfort dogs by the LCC as a ministry. The LCC website featured a story about a man who was called to be Director of LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Ministries. They even had an installation service on October 2! Comfort Dog Ministries? No! The ministry of Christ is the ministry of reconciliation. St. Paul writes: Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation. Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ s behalf, be reconciled to God. For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him (2 Corinthians 5:18-21 NKJV). The use of comfort dogs that cannot possibly strengthen faith is called a ministry of the church. The ministry of Christ is the ministry of reconciliation. It brings eternal comfort and peace to people who were trapped in their sin and heading toward eternal ruin. The ministry of Christ is not to be confused with providing transient, shallow, unspiritual, emotional comfort to folks suffering momentary distress. Christ s ministry provides eternal life! To speak of the ministry of providing comfort dogs for people facing tragedies in their lives is to cheapen our language, our theology, and our faith. Count me among those who would advise the LWML to discontinue their support of the ministry of comfort dogs. 3 District President Shari Miller With the Lord begin your task; Jesus will direct it. For His aid and counsel ask; Jesus will perfect it. Ev'ry morn with Jesus rise, And, when day is ended, In His name then close your eyes; Be to Him commended. (LSB 869:1) Sometimes the tasks we have at hand seem very great. We know that most activities and jobs that we tackle (paid or unpaid) require a toll on our energy, our time, and even our emotions. The things that must be done often become a chore, rather than a joy. The words of the hymn above remind us that every task begun should start with the Lord. We can meditate on His Word and find strength and guidance for each undertaking. We can go to Him in prayer and ask for wisdom and encouragement for the task. Colossians 3:17 reminds us: And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Do we remember this as we look at the days ahead with so much to do? (Perhaps some of us are already counting down the days until Christmas!) Do we look on our occupation and the tasks that we do as working for the Lord? How does that change our attitude toward our neighbors, our co-workers, or even our family? What task has God appointed you to do? Do you regularly read the Bible and attend Bible study? Do you participate in worship and fellowship activities? Do you look for service opportunities? Do you have a career in the workplace and/or as a homemaker? Are you a wife, mom, sister, aunt, grandma, or daughter? As God s dearly loved children, it seems that we can easily be women who multi-task! Isn t it reassuring to know that God is there each and every minute, guiding and directing us. Our response is simply to do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus. An excerpt from our LWML pledge reads: In fervent gratitude for the Savior's dying love and His blood-bought gift of redemption we dedicate ourselves to Him with all that we are and have to the great task of bringing the lost and the erring into eternal fellowship with Him. The LWML Montana District has been tasked with many service opportunities. You can read about some of them throughout this newsletter. Together we can study God s Word; give our mites for grants that will support the spread of the Gospel to those who need to hear about Jesus and His love; participate in service opportunities in our churches, our zones, and for the LWML Convention; and confidently look to the future with the Lord at our side. If your task be thus begun With the Savior's blessing, Safely then your course will run, Toward the promise pressing. Good will follow everywhere While you here must wander; You at last the joy will share In the mansions yonder. (LSB 869:1) Are you staying in His Word and participating in His Sacraments?

Christian Life By Sonja Reeves, Vice President of Christian Life Cause me to hear Thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in Thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul Nothing strengthens our faith more than the Word and Sacraments. If we are talking about the Lord s Supper, we can experience that blessing, in some congregations, four times a month. If it is Baptism, we have the initial transformation of dying to the self and being born again through the Spirit to remember on a daily basis. Last, but certainly not least, there is the Word! He who has ears, let him hear (Mark 4:9 ESV). The Psalm 143 verse above quantifies the very core of the Christian life. Hearing God s Word daily and trusting in that Word is what guides us on the path of righteousness. Y our word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105). It is my hope that each of you take advantage of what the Lord offers to us through His Word, every day, because it is truly how the Spirit enables us to lift our souls unto Thee! Another way our faith is strengthened is through fellowship with our sisters in Christ! That is exactly what happened the weekend of September at the Treasured Fall Retreats. Many of you from all across the state got to enjoy this special weekend in which we were blessed by a wonderful Bible study brought to us by Rev. Preus and Rev. Whaley, time in song, crafts, and free time to play catch-up with those not seen since the last LWML gathering. I think that we all walked away feeling a bit more treasured than when we arrived! Have a blessed fall season as we prepare ourselves for the new church year! Servant Resources By Pam Kercher, Vice President of Servant Resources There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven (Ecclesiastes 3:1). As the plans for the Fort Peck retreat began to unfold, we found that there would be a time for change and the time was now. As it ended up, we needed to change the venue because of a scheduling problem. With just two weeks until the event we decided to relocate the retreat to the fellowship hall at Trinity Lutheran Church in Billings. It turned out to be a good move, as we did not lose anyone that had registered and added seven more ladies to our numbers. With 22 ladies studying the Word under the wonderful guidance of Rev. Preus, the retreat was filled with fun, fellowship, food, and even some bling. Our servant event was cutting fleece blankets to be tied at the upcoming LWML Convention to be held in Albuquerque in June of Ladies who crochet and knit were encouraged to take yarn home and work on the dishcloths and scrubbies for the convention. Friday night and Saturday morning creativity was running wild as we colored cards for the people we treasure in our lives and made bling to mark our places in our Bibles. Our time together was truly Treasured

Gospel Outreach Committee By Kathy Scott, Vice President of Gospel Outreach Many thanks go to Judy Blakesley for her years of service in this position; especially the two highly organized, concise file boxes with letters and procedures she had ready for this newby! Actually, it didn't take me long to realize that this is possibly the best job on the Board of Directors. I get to send lots of mail, get lots of mail, send happy $ mail (to grant recipients), and forward their thanks on to all of you! So far we have paid two of our new grants: Montana Pastors in Foreign Fields and Sharing Jesus in the Dominican Republic. As Terry Putnam wrote with thanks for the Bethesda Auxiliary and the LCMS mission team and Dominican church members, "This grant will be a great help in the disabilities ministry, that the Lord continues to bless, as the care continues to improve, and the Gospel shared." As we make plans to wrap up this year; keep in mind the possibilities you see for the next group of grants that will help focus on sharing the Gospel and pointing people to the Savior. Young Women By Roseanne Larson, Young Woman Co-Chairman An Opportunity to Serve LWML gives women in The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod an opportunity to serve that is like no other women s organization. We provide funds for missions of the church with over $1,000,000 given to Mission Grants in the last 75 years. Each District supports missions and Montana alone provides over $22,000 in Mission Grants over the biennium. Local societies are active and help out in projects in their own communities. The list could go on and on. My own experience with LWML started with my mother-in-law and my husband s grandmother encouraging me to join them in the meeting. Over the years I held many offices and went to conventions and rallies. And why? Only because someone invited me and encouraged me. We have been able to share this with young women in our churches and encouraging them to become active in LWML. Like the rest of us, they are busy with their vocations that God has provided for them. Even though they are busy, they have taken the time to become a part of LWML. We are so blessed to have them participate with us at the local, district, and national level. It is exciting to see the enthusiasm of the YWR s when they return from an LWML Convention and hear about the experiences they have had. We will be sending two Young Women Representatives to the Convention in Albuquerque next June. This is a wonderful opportunity for someone you know to have a closer look at LWML and what we do; and to become involved and be encouraged. Look around your congregation and talk to all the young women. Please encourage young women in your society to send an application to both Billye Roseleip and me by October 31. Blessings as we press on toward the goal!

Nominating Committee By Christine Wallace, Nominating Committee Chairman Dear Sisters in Christ, Fall is in the air and I hope you were able to attend one of our LWML Montana District Fall retreats and zone rallies! I am grateful for the many talented ladies we have in Montana. They make our activities so enjoyable, we are truly blessed, and we are treasures one and all. Please continue your work in the LWML. Perhaps you are involved in your local society or on the zone level. Perhaps you are a much needed contact person serving to support one of the District officers. Perhaps you are in a position to take on a new role or activity in the LWML and could join us on the District Board in the spring of 2018? You are all treasures and your service is vital to the LWML. We need you and it is my prayer that you will consider serving as opportunities become available. I m reminded of a song I learned as a young child: Two little eyes to look to God Two little ears to hear His word. Two little feet to walk His way, Hands to serve Him all my days! C.C. Kerr Structure Committee By Mryt White, Structure Committee Chairman But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way (I Corinthians 14:40). I am honored to serve as the LWML Montana District Structure Committee Chairman for the coming term. Shari Miller, who previously served in this position, did extensive work to organize the Bylaws, LWML Montana Manual, and provide a wide variety of other information on a flash drive which has been very helpful and eliminated a lot of paper. I thank her for her work on this which has certainly helped me during this transition. Bylaw changes approved at the LWML Montana District Convention in April 2016 have been updated in the flash drive. They will be available at the website, lwml.org.

Our region is hosting the LWML Convention in Albuquerque in 2017 and we have A LOT of work ahead of us. If every society in the host districts donates $85 to the cause, we will have the seed money needed to get the major planning underway. I hope that you will all make plans to join us! If your society is able to give this $85, please send it to the following address: and make checks payable to the Albuquerque Host Committee LWML Convention ABQ Host Committee Treasurer Rhonda Johnson 743 Wayne Avenue Pocatello, ID Ways to Involve Young Women By Rosanne Larson, Young Woman Co-Chairman As LWML members we look to aid the women of our LCMS congregations in growing their faith in Jesus Christ. It is not always an easy thing to do as so many women today work outside of the home and may not be able to come to Bible studies or other congregation activities. I truly believe that the biggest reason that women are less involved in the church today is that they may not be in the Word as much as they need to be for spiritual growth. And they do may not have close relationships with other members. Some Ideas to Consider: Become involved in the LWML Devotional Tea Party which happens every Saturday and is a 30-minute Bible study through face book. com/ the lwml where women from across the nation can interact in the study. Go to LWML for more information. Women don t have to leave home to have Bible study. As an individual or as a group give a young mom a break and offer to bring a dinner for her family. She will see that you are there for her and it may open doors to grow a closer friendship. How about offering, as some do, a couples date night where you will offer babysitting for them at your church or in their home. It shows that we care for them and desire, as God s children, to serve them. If you have a service project like making fleece blankets for people in your community, you can invite women to come and have a working lunch and devotions on a Saturday or a time that she is free and can even bring the kids. Drop off a batch of cookies with a small devotion book for mom ( CPH has several of them). Give the children Bible story books to encourage families to be in the Word together. As we become closer to each other as a church family we have more opportunity to encourage each other We all know that every penny helps us achieve our mission goals and here is a great way to earn a penny for every search you do on the Internet. The search engine Goodsearch will donate a penny towards the cause of your choice for every stop you make on the Internet looking, shopping, surveying and searching. Simply sign up on with your and then let the fun begin I support national LWML one penny at a time and I hope you will too! ~ Brook

Human Care By Deborah Knudsen, Vice President of Human Care God's blessings to all! Summer is leaving, leaves are falling, and snowflakes are soon to follow. Where have we been? We went to camp. Camp Utmost was fantastic! Oh how we shined, Bling! Bling! Towels were gathered and fleece was cut for blankets to be tied at the 2017 LWML Convention. Activities included making "bling" crosses, coloring bookmarks, and going on walks. And we sang praises to our Lord. Rev. Kyle Whaley gave a Bible Study on "Bling. We are all "diamonds" in the rough being transformed by our Lord. Many of us will attend Zone Rallies. Be sure to ask how you can be a part of the 2017 LWML Convention. The help-wanted list from national convention planners includes many easy projects which could be done at gatherings or at home. Check with your Zone President, Sonja Reeves, or Marjorie O'Rourke for more information. As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace (1 Peter 4:10).

Web Coordinator By Stephanie Edgar Montana District LWML Website The first step as Web Coordinator was to find a new platform for the website. The old format was not userfriendly and it was difficult to update, add photos, add documents, etc. With the help of President Shari Miller and former Web Coordinator, Nenette Loftsgaarden, we chose Weebly as our new website host. Once Weebly was purchased, I created our new website from scratch, minus documents and forms already created from the old website. I chose a background and colors that had purple as the main theme. I worked with different fonts until I found some that worked well and I created the different tabs to reflect main categories. I added all of the documents and pictures that I could find, in order to help zones and churches be able to get all of the information needed. I will continue to add information about the 2017 Convention as I receive it. There is a link to the convention information as well. I have tried to make our district website as informative and easy-to-use as possible. If something doesn't seem to work correctly, please let me know that as well. I would love more pictures for the website. Please send me any you have. You can also submit them through the website. Faith-filled Parenting: Beauty In the Word I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalm 139:14 Of the Word Beauty is in the eye of the beholder is an oft-repeated phrase. Fortunately, God the Father looks at His dear children through the eyes of Jesus, the Savior and Redeemer of the world who suffered and died on the cross so that everyone could be saved. Our Heavenly Father, looking through the shadow of the cross, sees His children as forgiven. This spiritual beauty is much more important than any physical trait or characteristic. In our world, physical appearance is very important, especially to young people. Children need to receive affirmation from their parents that they look nice, have a beautiful smile, or have a great sense of fashion. Most importantly, however, parents must assure their children that they have inner beauty because God has claimed them as His own. Stretch your faith-filled parenting: Make an effort to compliment the appearance of your child each day. Be specific. Remind your child of the inner beauty that is a gift from God. Walking with my Lord Creating Father, thank You for sending Jesus to take away the stain of sin and making me clean and beautiful in Your sight. In Jesus name. Amen. 11 Date: June 22-25, 2017 Location: Albuquerque, New Mexico Theme: Jesus Christ Above All Scripture Verse: Therefore God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name that is above every name (Philippians 2:9). Convention Goal Statement: Empowered by the Holy Spirit, through Word and Sacrament, I will proclaim Jesus Christ above all. Convention Objectives Each convention attendee will be: Encouraged through worship and Bible study. Equipped to share His message of salvation.
