1 HARBOUR LIGHT December 2012 Party Time! What a great party to attend! Face painting, Jumping castle, bubbles, craft, a flannel-graph Christmas story, pizza and ice-cream cones. What kid could ask for more? Well presents of course and they had those too! Each child received a gift of a book A couple of children even put on a magic show. After a very busy year it was great to have so much fun together on one evening. Around thirty children and twenty adults joined in the fun and festivity. Just look at the beautiful Christmas Tree the children made. What wonderful mesmerised looks on faces! No professional magician could ask for more. 1 Recently the children learnt about giving and made money boxes which were used to collect donations from parishioners. The $65.00 raised was used to purchase school supplies, chickens, safe drinking water and a vegetable garden from the TEAR shop.

2 Ebenezer- Thus far the Lord has helped us- 1 Samuel 7: 12 This month I have been thinking of how fast this year as gone. We have been running around doing so many things, very busy. At the same time we realized how God s hand is on us as we continue our journey. The word thus far is like a hand pointing in the direction of the past. It has been, a long time or last year or several years but the Lord has helped us to cross all the honour, dishonour, difficulties, joy, sorrow, triumph, prayer or temptation. When we think about the next year, the same God who is with us will continue His blessings on us for the future. God holds our future in his hands. We are organizing a week of activities for children 6yrs to 12 yrs called the Grow Together program from Jan This program will start at 9am finish at 2.30 pm. The kids will learn Spanish for 40 minutes and then the 5P program Painting, Pool fun, Play, Pottery and Picnic fun. If you would like to help us, please let us know. Day Care centre - the Parish is planning to start a day care centre with the help of AusProof Pty. Ltd. Please kindly pray for this program. AusProof has promised to help us to organize the playground too. If everything goes well we will start the day care centre in the early March From your Priest School Break Care- we are trying to organize school break care for disadvantaged families who are unable to pay for their kids to attend school holiday care. GAPDL may help us with organizing this program in the school breaks. Parish AGM- we will have our AGM on the 10 February 2013, please mark in your diaries to attend this so that we will plan for our parish next year. We have been blessed to have Wendy and Noel Wootton with us for some years. They have been helping us in Sunday services and also in nursing homes. We are blessed by them a lot but now they are moving to Townsville. Please continue your prayer support for them. We are organising a farewell for them on the 14/12/12 at the Christmas Tree festival. Country side Christmas- We had a wonderful time in Ubobo on the 3 rd Dec, now we are organizing one at Mt Larcom on the 16/12/12. Please come and participate. Once again Wayne Paton will be playing and singing music for us. This n That Shop- the parish organized Christmas Lunch for all the volunteers at St Saviour s Hall on the 8/12/12. I thank everyone who participated and helped in that lunch. It was great to have our Bishop came to encourage these people. The parish gave a small gift to each volunteer as a small thankyou for their generous contribution to the shop. Yours in Christ Daniel 2

3 Parish Roundup Sparks. What a wonderful addition to our Christmas decorations. St Saviours Saviours As you are all no doubt aware the big organ at St Saviours blew up some months ago. After some months of using second hand keyboards we now have a brand new electronic keyboard which was played for the first service on Sunday December 9. This instrument is much more user friendly for those who help our worship by playing the music for hymns each week. How wonderful to have this in time for Christmas! Our new Nativity display Wendy Wootton at the new keyboard St Peter s After a rocky start to the year, St Peter s Sunday School found our groove in semester 2. The Sunday schoolers all did a fantastic job remembering their memory verses and we finished off the year by going through the Old Testament making a felt banner to highlight creation through to Jesus. A highlight was the Sunday School shop where stars accumulated during the term were cashed in for lots of little goodies. A special thanks to all teachers involved: Danielle Ellis, Jenny Hinde and Annslie Stovell. Have you had a chance to checkout the new Nativity set in the front garden at St Saviour s. We crafted, playdohed, sang and storied to our hearts delight. A special thanks to all the Mum's who get involved each week to bring morning tea, help setup, organise crafts and make the playdoh. It really is a mixed effort. We were sad to see Rosemary leave us this year as she had been an integral part of our lives for a few years. We have a new few faces this year and we welcome Edna who has brought her own special mark to the group. continued from page 3 The wonderful new storage shed at St Peter s Union Church Calliope Through the efforts of the Union Church Committee the Union Church has received as facelift. The building now has cladding which will ensure it remains looking good for years to come. Wow! Is the best word to describe the new shed at St Peter s. This shed has been specially built to store large items donated for the This n That Shop. The covered open area at the front of the shed is to allow those donating large items to leave them undercover and off the footpath. Kerry Janes has worked hard to get this built with the assistance of parishioners. Fund raising is still in process to pay the $25,000 so keep an eye on the information in the beacon if you can or would like to help. The new look Union Church at Calliope continued on page 8 4

Addressing our responsibility to have all electrical equipment tagged and tested. Young Adults group will investigate the possibility of a parish car rally early next year. There are now 3 Brekky clubs operating in the Parish thanks to generous donations from GAPDL. Mondays at Central State School, Tuesdays at Clinton State School and every second Friday at Calliope. There will be a school holiday Grow Together program at St Saviours from Jan 14th -18th This will be run in conjunction with the GAPDL. A call has now gone out for annual reports from each group within the parish. 8 Parish Roundup continued from page 4 St Luke s Ubobo The afternoon heat of Sunday 2 December shimmered over the dry grass around the little weatherboard church of St Luke. As regulars in our Parish know, Ubobo is a small township about an hour by road South West of Gladstone. The small congregation was swelled to about 20 by friends and relatives from Calliope and Gladstone. After the communion service celebrated by our Priest-in-Charge the Rev Daniel Paulraj, the congregation crossed the road to the CWA hall for a BBQ tea. Steak and salad were accompanied by Wayne Paton on the guitar. In the cool of the evening there were Christmas carols, plenty of rock and roll and even a little dancing to go with it. John Williams passed a vote of thanks to Father Daniel and to the Gladstone crowd who catered and cooked. Alan McLeod All Saints Mt Larcom December 16th will see All Saints Mt Larcom come alive again a Wayne Paton again leads parishioners and locals in Christmas Carols before a BBQ tea. Men s Breakfast. [From discussions with Herb St Pierre] Most men drag themselves out of bed early each working day to go to work and enjoy the opportunity to have a sleep in on Saturdays. The men of this parish, six times a year, get up early on a Saturday morning too to go out for breakfast. Herb St Pierre said, It all started back when Fr Mike Vercoe first came to the parish so it would be about 10 years now. The men gather at the first BBQ area from the bridge in the Marina at 7am on the first Saturday of each even month. This means the next breakfast will be in February He continued, We always have a guest speaker, sometimes this speaker will talk on his spiritual journey but sometimes the speech is on a topic of general interest. Our last speaker told of his profession as a teacher at a local high school. On other occasions we have heard about the adventures of the speaker whilst travelling. Usually about 20 men attend these breakfasts to enjoy good food and good company. As each event concludes about 8.30am there is plenty of the day left for all those necessary weekend tasks! All men of the parish are encouraged to mark the 1 st Sunday of each even month [February, April, June, August, October and December) in their diaries so they too can join in the experience of a Men s Breakfast at the Marina. 8
