1 KENWOOD LUTHERAN NEWS May 2018 FAITH UNDER FIRE I would like to invite you to the spring bible study! Surprise the title is Faith under Fire. It s focused on exploring Christianity s 10 toughest questions. For example: in week four the question is Do all roads lead to God? Well, do they? I am interested to hear what the presenters say about that, and to hear what our bible study participants think. This bible study is in DVD format along with a study guide just to help us dig in a little. Hope you can make it, because I would love to hear what you think. We are meeting on Monday evenings at 6:30 pm. Since the weather is getting nicer and the evenings are still bright with sun, we should enjoy a good study and you can still get home before it s too dark. So come and join us. DO ALL ROADS LEAD TO GOD? The season of Easter is a good time to be WELL, DO THEY? starting this new bible study and especially this year. Throughout the season of Easter this year (2018) our first scripture lesson is taken from the book of Acts. Acts is a record of what happened to the early church following the resurrection. Talk about faith under fire, it was a church under fire. Following the Ascension, all kinds of things start happening. First the disciples had to choose a replacement for Judas, and then they almost immediately go public with their faith. So the Jewish leaders are in hot pursuit and they are not only finding ways to defend their new found faith in Jesus but they are reaching out to all sorts or unsavory characters and inviting them to become followers of Jesus. Next, the Holy Spirit descends on them at Pentecost and the Christian faith starts spreading throughout the whole Mediterranean world. The church is growing and they have to find some way to be the church. This faith invites them to care for the needs of all and they discover just how LIFE IS FILLED WITH TOUGH hard it is to follow Jesus example. Then in Acts chapter 5 the story of Ananias and Sapphira is told, QUESTIONS AND SOMETIMES VERY who instead of giving the money from a property they had sold decided to keep some of the proceeds for themselves. Big mistake! Not the keeping of the money so much, but the lie that went with it. So do you know what happened? They both died! That has got to raise a few tough questions, right? FEW ANSWERS. YOU ARE NOT ALONE IF YOU ARE FACING TOUGH QUESTIONS OR DIFFICULT TIMES.

2 Life is filled with tough questions and sometimes very few answers. You are not alone if you are facing tough questions or difficult times. Questions about life, and raising children. Maybe you are HOW DO WE NAVIGATE ALL THE facing end of life questions, like where to live. INCREDIBLY TOUGH QUESTIONS? Today may be that day that you realize you can no longer be alone in the home you have lived in for 20 or 30 years. It s possible you see a new opportunity coming or a change in employment. How do we navigate all the incredibly tough questions? I know we will not be addressing all of those questions in our bible study but it s good to know that we can ask those questions, and in a safe place. That we can trust those around us as we struggle to know what God is doing and what scripture says about life. We may even learn that the scriptures do help us, if not directly at least indirectly by reminding us that God is present. There is a reason that we are reminded weekly to be the body of Christ for each other. Here s another way tough questions get answered. We come together to support each other. I am proud to report that Kenwood contributed $ to CHUM. This money went to the CHUM Food Shelf. On top of that, during March all gifts of food and cash were matched. That makes our gifts worth twice as much. Then to top it all off, the Food Shelf obtains food from participating vendors who lower the cost to the Food Shelf which helps stretch that $1 and give it the purchasing value of $7. So. The CHUM director Lee Stuart, would like to thank each and every one of you who make feeding those in need possible. I too would like to thank each of you for this good work and for giving your answer to that tough question. How am I to treat my neighbor? As if Jesus were your and my neighbor. Thanks! Peace in Christ, Pastor Jeffrey Holter

3 Happy May! It sure doesn t feel like it right now. Duluth just broke a one day total for snowfall this past Sunday, April 15. As my Dad would say, That s an Uff dah. Being Minnesotans, we still got together for church. On Saturday, April 14, a bunch of us got together to clean and paint. There were 12 people here that day. The tables in the Fellowship Hall have been cleaned. The storage room (former preschool room) was cleaned and organized. The Fireside Room was also painted. In addition, a group of Youth led by Shannon Borgeson painted the new Youth Room. A huge thank you for all who helped! The funny thing about cleaning and organizing God s House is stuff starts showing up. Joan Holter found a box filled with old bulletins. The bulletins dated back to the early to mid 70s. There were some familiar names like the organists one Sunday were the Jensen Sisters: Linda (Tyacke) and Peggy (Simensen). The acolyte was Steve Greenfield. There are a thousand of other little gems in the box Joan found and other boxes waiting to be found. We do need some help. We need help scanning the bulletins into electronic copy. Help is also needed to go through the information and help it get organized for the church archives and the 75 th Anniversary. The same is needed with the Messiah Lutheran Documents. Would you like to reminisce and help with the project? Your church experience and memories are needed. Please let either Joan or me know. It will be fun. Speaking of the 75 th Anniversary, there will be a carnival and ice cream social the afternoon of August 11. There will be a combined service with a meal following on Sunday, August 12. Everyone is invited. Plans are in the works. The other 75 that keeps coming up is the $75,000 for the Raise the Roof Campaign. The total amount (pledges and cash received) as of April 16 is $33, Praise be to God for the funds raised! Blessings, Joy Michalicek Kenwood Lutheran President

9 Self and Service 2018: Serve in the Light of God You are my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth. Jesus (Acts 1:8) For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has St. Paul (2 Corinthians 8:12) We continue to live into our promise this year to march [live] in the light of God. Look at the steps we have taken so far Committing money to our mission and ministry as a church Sharing personal gifts to enrich our worship life as a congregation Taking care of the building that God provides for us in the Raise the Roof campaign to replace the church roof. As of April 16, we have received cash and pledges totaling $33, toward a goal of $75,000 to replace the roof, repair masonry and complete repairs to the building interior resulting from roof damage. We are following in God s footsteps. Now we get to give another kind of gift of ourselves. These gifts of ourselves are what help our congregation live and thrive. You see the list on this page. We get to add beauty to the inside and the outside of our church as we care for the property. We can add to the spirits of others through Card Ministry, CARE, engaging with one another through events (like the Senior Lunch, Rummage Sale, helping with fundraisers, etc.) The key to your gift isn t which one you give, it is your eagerness! God has a place for you. So here is your invitation from Jesus to give yourself and your service: during worship. Remember, these opportunities aren t routine: they support our guests and one another to follow Jesus. Our service helps us to grow spiritually in friendship with God and in faith. What else can you do? During the year there will be other opportunities serving at church and being the face of Kenwood in the community. Each contributes to following Jesus. You are important to God. You are important to Kenwood. Thank you for using this form and placing it in the offering plate this Sunday. Additional copies will be available at worship during the next few weeks.
