1 CHURCH RUMMAGE SALE Aloha! Someplace that I would like to visit someday is Hawaii. Preferably in the dead of winter, so that I can replenish the depleted vitamins we lose for lack of sunlight in these northern Minnesota winters. Presently my only real knowledge of Hawaii comes IT MAKES IT FEEL LIKE ONE IS from the show Magnum P I., which by the way STILL OPEN TO NEW ENCOUNTERS, was Awesome! But I hardly think that makes me MAYBE EVEN HOPING TO SEE a native. In spite of that, I did learn a lot about the islands and appreciate the green foliage and the THAT PERSON AGAIN. beautiful sunrises and sunsets. I also learned a few words, including Aloha! Which we all know means both Hello and Good Bye in Hawaiian. See, I think that is just so righteous. Which is 70 s for cool. Let s just say it s pretty neat, using the same word to both say good bye and hello. After all, it does seems like a friendly thing to do. It s nice to leave a greeting open ended like that. It makes it feel like one is still open to new encounters, maybe even hoping to see that person again. In Brazil the people say: Ate Logo. Which means: Until Soon. Making it so that one never has to say Good Bye if they don t want to. This may all be very strange to us but it does remind me of an important liturgical piece that perhaps we could make better use of here at Kenwood. We used this when Frank and Kristy Stokes moved away. It s not in our ELW hymnbook, but it s in the Occasional Services handbook that most pastors own. It s one of the ways we live out our baptismal vows to support and care for each and every member. What I really appreciate about this service (Farewell and Godspeed) is that it reminds us that we are the body of Christ together. Apart, the church of God and the body of Christ becomes fragmented and our witness WE WOULD HAVE LOVED TO HAVE also then becomes fragile and fragmented. SAID, WITHOUT YOU, THE BODY OF CHRIST FOR US WILL FEEL This year we had two families leave our church and few of us even know that they were leaving until they INCOMPLETE. were already gone. Ernie Dornfeld and his wife Meredythe, and then just last month Doris Sodahl left to be closer to their families. We could not be happier for them, knowing that they were going to be taken care of and that their families could provide the kind of ongoing support that we will all need as we get older. But this all took place without our church family
2 here at Kenwood having a chance to say Aloha. It happened without us having that opportunity to tell Ernie and Meredythe and Doris how much we have appreciated sharing our lives with them, worshipping with them, and being church with them. We would have loved to have said, Without you, the body of WE ARE THE BODY OF CHRIST. Christ for us will feel incomplete. YOU ARE MY EYES AND EARS AND Let me make a suggestion, for the sake of ARMS AND LEGS. the church and for the sake of Kenwood. Please let us change our culture and how we see ourselves tied to each other. We are the body of Christ. You are my eyes and ears and arms and legs. You complete me, and when you hurt or are absent, if I don t see you and at least know where you are, well then I am in essence broken. It s absolutely true. You are important to God..BUT.. You are important to Kenwood. So my suggestion is this; if you are going to leave, please let Kenwood know. OK? Maybe it seems like a small thing, but it s not. It s kind of what Joan and I have told our kids. A phone call means a lot to us, especially when we have no idea where you are. Honor us and let Kenwood know where you are and when you are going. Kenwood wants to share an Aloha with you. Hello! And in Christ, Good bye. Godspeed! Until later! Blessings, Pastor Jeffrey Holter
3 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Fall is in the Air The leaves are turning and fall programming started up in September. I am writing this the day after Rally Sunday. The Sunday School kids had fun at the fire pit roasting marshmallows and eating s mores. It was fun to see cradle roll kids get blessed during church. The Stewardship Drive will begin this month. The Stewardship Team is working with the Council on this year s Stewardship Drive. Why is pledging important? Pledging helps us to plan for next year. It allows us to form a budget so that we as a church can be better stewards for Christ. The Council is also working with Stewardship to have a Volunteer Fair on All Saints Sunday. There will be tables set up with the different opportunities and activities that happen at Kenwood. Please come and enjoy a treat and learn a little more about what is happening. Please note, the 75 th Anniversary History Display is still up in the Messiah Room. We will be keeping the display up through the end of the year. The Pictures are also on display.
