September From Pastor Sarah / Council News Page 2 From Pastor Sarah September is often a time of transition. Students and teachers head back to school. The days get noticeably shorter. My family certainly has transition on our minds! We are preparing to welcome our second child in November. Our to-do lists are growing even as we try to relish this precious time together now. As your pastor, I am spending much energy trying to plan for the future without knowing exactly what will come. For the church, being in a transitional time means planning for Sunday School and Adult education, setting the groundwork for funding future capital improvements, getting our great new members, new council members, and new staff people (Kris Rinnert and Rev. Brian Erickson) integrated into our life together, and always, attending to the shifting needs of our community. Transitions can cause anxiety and destabilize even the most centered people. When you get so caught up in the frenzy of change and the uncertainty of the future, it s easy to lose sight of the ongoing presence of God. At the same time, if you try to live as if nothing should change, you risk missing out on the ongoing creative work of God s Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today and forever, reads Hebrews 13:8. And See I am doing a new thing, says Isaiah 43:19. So which is it? Does God remain stable or does God create change? Yes. Yes to both. The stability of God s faithful presence to us goes hand-in-hand with the change that God creates in our lives. We are able to move through the changes and go through transitions because we can rely on God s love to be unchanging. AND we are able to find divine sources of stability in the midst of what seem to be impossible changes. I have no doubt that each of you reading this is in the midst of some change in your life. As the saying goes change is not optional. I pray that as you face whatever change or transition you are undergoing, you will find both Godgiven stability and God-given newness. I certainly trust that in our life together as Peace Lutheran Church, a life that thankfully is full of good and exciting changes, God is present in all of it. Happy Fall! Be at Peace, From Council President, Cathy Kroohs Hi everyone -- I know that the calendar says the year starts in January, but for me it always feels as if September is the beginning of the year. I guess all those years of school had some effect, anyway! I hope you've had a good summer and are ready for school, autumn, and (hopefully) some cooler weather. For those of you who've been away, or just too busy to keep up, things have been happening at Peace, I'll give you a rundown. In June, the Brass of Peace presented their outdoor alumni concert. It was well attended, with members of Peace, neighbors, and friends and families of the musicians. The music was great and the food was also welcome. Put this on your calendar for next year - it is always a wonderful afternoon. In July, Peace and St. Alban's Episcopal cooperated on 2 big events: Vacation Bible School and (Continued on page 3)

September Words Council of Peace News Page 3 (Continued from page 2) the Youth mission trip to Hurley, VA. We've been working together with St. Alban's for quite a while now, and I think that we have been able to be blessings to each other as well as to the people of Hurley and the children who attend VBS. Peace also hosted a music camp organized by Hanna Kebbede and the Emahoy Music Foundation (ask her about it!). For 3 weeks children learned piano and guitar, and then presented a concert for their families and friends. In August, Pr. Sarah led a 3 week discussion of the book The Trouble I ve Seen: Changing the Way the Church Views Racism by Drew Hart. The discussions were well attended, thoughtful and thought provoking. If you haven't read this book, ask around and borrow a copy! So now, for the new beginnings - Sunday school will begin in September and we'd certainly like to have some additional volunteers in our class rooms. No theological or Bible training is needed - there are lesson plans & books to use. My personal conviction is that it is the responsibility of the adults in the church to make sure that the children understand 2 things: that God loves them just the way they are, and that they are important enough to us (the adults) that we will show up to be with them on Sundays. If you think our children are important, please consider volunteering some time with the Sunday school (or confirmation, or youth). Our music programs will soon swing back into their full schedules, and you are always welcome to join the fun. Voices of Peace (more commonly called the 'adult choir') meets Mondays from 7 to 8 pm. Messengers of Peace (the ones who lead worship on the 3rd Sunday of the month) meet Tuesdays from 8:15-9:15 pm. Handbells offer you 2 choirs, and Paul Sticha has been heard to say that all you need is the ability to count to 4 and to swing the bell; he'll teach you the rest. I can testify that color coding the music (red notes get played with the right hand and blue notes with the left) is very helpful. Mondays from 8:15 to 9:15 pm or Tuesdays from 7-8 pm. With many, many thanks from us, Marcia Dursi is passing the baton of adult forum organization and leadership. We don't yet know who is taking it up... is it you? Marcia led the Sunday morning discussions, but if you'd rather organize by arranging for others to lead, that has worked well in the past too. Pr. Brian Erickson will lead a 4 week series during October, so that gives whoever volunteers some time to work things out. If you are interested in organizing, leading a discussion for a week or longer, or want to recommend a speaker or a topic, please let me know. Next year (2017 already!) Peace will celebrate its 60th anniversary, but how do we want to celebrate? A formal dinner or a picnic or both? T-shirts, ball caps, bumper stickers? A written, or oral, or video history? A cookbook? A series of concerts, or a series of speakers, or both? If you have a suggestion, if you are interested in doing anything to help us celebrate, please let me know. You don't have to organize the whole thing unless you want to... just choose the part you like. People who understand organization and scheduling tell me that I'm already a bit late with this, so anyone who wants to help get us moving is welcome. We'll have a family meeting in October (probably the 2nd, but it isn't actually scheduled yet). We'll talk about the budget and the Funding the Future campaign, about Pr. Sarah's maternity leave and how things will run while she is gone, and about the anniversary celebration if there is anything to talk about by then. Please let me know what else you think we should be talking about.

September Words FINANCE of Peace Page 5 Different Ways You Can Give to Peace Lutheran When giving your offerings to Peace church, you have the capability to determine how the donated funds will be used. Designated giving is always available to members of Peace. The majority of offerings received are undesignated or designated to the general fund. These offerings are used to operate the church and to support its core missions. They could also be used in other ways if designated by the council or the congregation. These offerings are added to other undesignated income sources, such as the T- Mobile cell tower lease payments, to become our total income for the budget each year. Undesignated giving provides Peace with the flexibility to meet unexpected needs and the ability to make sure the highest priority areas get the funds they need. It also helps us to execute our budget by achieving at least a zero net income at year end. Designations can be provided by the donor when the offering is given to the church. Monthly special offerings are used to guide you to make a designated offering to those areas the Ministry to Others committee has chosen as the most worthy. Designated gifts have their own dedicated liability accounts to ensure these designated offerings are accounted for separately. After you give the offering, our financial team will credit your gift to the appropriate designation. Giving reports provided to you will include the designations, as well as the amounts given. Examples of types of designations include those provided to religious or charitable organizations. Two of these designations are the Annandale Christian Community for Action (ACCA) and the Village of Hope (VOH) in Haiti. Other designations are for some of Peace s ministries or programs. Examples are Women Renewing at Peace (WRAP) and the Quilter s Ministry. Other notable designations include the Music Fund, used to provide support for many aspects of the music program; and the Pastor s Fund, used by Pastor Sarah to assist members in times of financial need. How to designate depends on how you provide your offerings to Peace. If you use the traditional giving methods (envelopes, checks and cash) make sure to write your designation on the envelope and on the check. Loose cash is considered to be undesignated. If you use electronic checks or credit/debit cards, there are provisions in the system to allow you to choose one of the designations. If you use the Peace brokerage account to deliver stocks, bonds and other non-cash donations to the church without selling them, you cannot make a designation. Sincerely, Alan Byroade Treasurer/Financial Officer The September Special Offering is for Lutheran World Relief Lutheran World Relief is an international non-governmental organization that focuses on sustainable development projects and disaster relief and recovery.

September Words WITNESS of MINISTRY Peace Page 6 Are We a Welcoming Church? An interesting article in the June issue of Living Lutheran says we may be misplacing our energies. Yes, we have greeters, name tags, friendly people, but being friendly means we are waiting for people to come in the door. But are we actively inviting people to come? We may be out of our comfort zone to do this, but God has called us to join God at work in the world. Never fear, the author of the Living Lutheran article, Pastor Rob Moss, provides suggestions on how to invite. First, think of what brings you to Peace, what inspires you, what soothes and helps you. As you are in conversation with others, he offers ways to bring Peace into the conversation. At the simplest level, use the phrase my church with one person each week. He offers the example, two blocks past my church is the grocery store you asked about. That s not too hard. Pastor Moss proposes thinking of something that you particularly enjoy at Peace and use the phrase, my church is with one person each week. My church is really amazing; we have so many babies and toddlers. In everyday conversations, listen for the other person s interests. Relate those to a program at Peace. How wonderful that your son sings in the school chorus. My church has a really good music program. Would you like to come to our Advent Carol Festival? We are now getting Pastor Moss theme. As we become more comfortable using the words my church in daily conversation, we can gradually introduce others to Peace. We may even get so bold as to invite someone to come on Sunday. Do read the entire article. It is interesting, enlightening and inspiring. or click here. Hope to see you at my church this Sunday. Witness Ministry, Sue Clark, Natalie Cain, Cilicia Wong-Lopez

MUSICIAN NEWS September Page 9 Augsburg Fortress Summer Music Conference, August 2016 In August this year, I joined hundreds of other church musicians who attended the Augsburg Fortress Summer Music Conference organized by the Augsburg Fortress Publishers, the ministry of publishing within the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ardmore, Pennsylvania. Designed for musicians involved in creating and planning music for worship, this event offered a great opportunity for exploring fresh and innovative ways to uplift music in worship. I am so much thankful for having this opportunity and at the same time equally excited to share with Peace s family some of my professional experiences as a participant. The workshops at the clinic were led by distinguished professionals in their specialized fields. The prominent Organ teacher and performer Dr. Kristina M. Langlois, a professor and university organist at the Concordia University, St. Paul and the Director of Instrumental Music at Augustana Lutheran Church in South St. Paul, led the Organ clinics. Her workshop What Tools Are in Your Hymn Playing Toolbox was valuable and very helpful when it comes to new techniques to uplift the congregational hymn singing. An amazing performer, she was able to demonstrate in her playing a variety of articulation and stylistic elements involved in the playing of hymns from the Renaissance/ Baroque era throughout Gospel/Spirituals, Revivalist, Folk/Contemporary, and Global hymns. I was also grateful to meet the well-known composer and arranger of more than 150 choral songs and the editor of Choral Music for Sundays and Seasons Bradley Ellingboe. He was in charge of leading the Festival choir and the choral reading sessions. He also taught a Choral workshop Effective Rehearsals Planning, which was instructive in giving mathematical charts for planning a Choir rehearsal and creating a viable rehearsal schedule. Under his baton, I had the privilege to sing Soprano in the Festival choir, which presented a Holy Week Journey: A Festival of Hymns. During the choral reading sessions, I was introduced to and sang more than a hundred new choral selections of a variety of difficulty levels and performance settings. As we prepare to start the new choir season and the New Year at Peace, I am grateful for the opportunity to attend such an important and inspiring conference as well as to meet and connect with many new colleagues who are dedicated to the art of music for worshiping. Be at Peace, Dr. Adela Peeva

We are always looking for new ideas for activities and new folks to plan games, set up tables, or serve food are always appreciated. New Service Opportunity! Senior High Quilts Every year as a group of our high school seniors graduate and transition into a new phase of their life, our congregation would like to honor them by presenting each senior with a homemade quilt. The quilt is carefully made with the senior s favorite colors and is filled with personal touches to reflect each senior s personality. These quilts will be a tangible reminder that wherever they may go in life, they are part of a caring community and are beloved children of God. I welcome anyone to join this group who loves fabric, likes to sew, likes to quilt, or would like to learn. The pattern we will use is very easy and a lot of fun to assemble. Those not inclined to sew can participate by sponsoring fabric for the quilt. Watch for opportunities this fall. Questionnaires will be sent to all current graduating seniors in September. In October, we will meet to gather fabric and begin work on the quilts. A series of workshops will be scheduled to assist in completing the quilts. Then the finished quilts will be presented to the graduating seniors on Senior Recognition Sunday in the spring. I hope you will consider joining me in this worthwhile and rewarding endeavor! We will have a great time, and the presentation of the quilts is a very meaningful experience for both the student and the quilters. Contact Kris Rinnert at ktrinnert@gmail.com to join in the fun!
