1 Hancock Covenant of Welcome We welcome all who seek to know God. We believe that, although we are many members, we are one body in Christ. We have been called as well as challenged by God to respect and reconcile our differences. We recognize and love each individual as a child of God. We welcome, respect, support, and lovingly encourage people of every race, ethnicity, creed, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, and physical and mental ability to join us on our journey of faith. This faith journey indeed calls Hancock Members not to be silent in the face of prejudice, injustice, and exclusion, but to express our faith, in word and deed, for justice and inclusiveness for all humanity. As Paul wrote to the Galatians, In Christ there is no longer Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for all are one. 2 Service of Worship Gathering Together To Praise God MOMENT FOR REFLECTION [The retort of the Canaanite woman] has the effect, as the story is told, of enabling Jesus to see the situa on in a different way. That new perspec ve appears to free Jesus to respond, to heal, to become again the channel of God's redeeming presence in that situa on. Whatever provoked the ini al response a ributed to Jesus... it is the Gen le woman who is said to have called his bluff. In doing so, she enabled him to act in a way apparently blocked to him before. Her wit, her sharp retort, was indeed a gi to Jesus a gi that enabled his gi of healing in turn, her ministry that opened up the possibility of his. Sharon Ringe, "A Gen le Woman's Story" "The narra ve portrays Jesus being bested by a woman, and changing his behavior on that account. This is the only instance in the extant tradi on of Jesus being taught by someone, and that someone is a woman who should not properly be speaking to him at all." Joanna Dewey, "Jesus' Healings of Women." PRELUDE Prelude on Hyfrydol by Flor Peeters CALL TO WORSHIP Based on Psalm 89 ONE: I will sing of your steadfast love, O Lord, forever. 4 Service of Worship PRAYERS FOR THE WORLD Becca Lockwood THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into tempta on, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. The Good News Is Proclaimed THE SCRIPTURE READING Matthew 15:21-28 Ed Cox Jesus le that place and went away to the district of Tyre and Sidon. Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shou ng, Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is tormented by her demon. But he did not answer her at all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, Send her away, for she keeps shou ng a er us. He answered, I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. But she came and knelt before him, saying, Lord, help me. He answered, It is not fair to take the children s food and throw it to the dogs. She said, Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters table. Then Jesus answered her, Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish. And her daughter was healed instantly.
