3 PAGE 3 MINNESOTA SOUTH DISTRICT WOMEN ON A MISSION FALL, 2011 ISSUE PRINTED: SEPTEMBER, 2011 The Care nucopia The National Convention in Peoria is now a memory and what a wonderful and uplifting experience it was! The Minnesota South Human Care Committee extends another Thank you to everyone who donated items for Gifts from the Heart, helped sort and pack these items at the Convention, helped at the Human Care Booth, and/or participated in the Servant Events. The response for Gifts from the Heart was fantastic with 30,341 items being collected: 2587 quilts 2382 towel sets 2795 underwear sets for men, women, and children 13,205 children s Arch books and picture Bibles 5587 health kits for men, women, and children 3875 miscellaneous items, including many not requested, such as a walker and a pair of crutches! The quilts and miscellaneous items went to Orphan Grain Train, and the remaining items went to three organizations in Peoria. The delegates at the Convention voted to eliminate the office of Vice President of Human Care. The national Human Care Committee is now called Mission Servants Committee and is part of Gospel Outreach. At this time, though, the Minnesota South District will continue to have a Vice President of Human Care and Human Care Committee. However, if you want to find Human Care information on the national level, look for Mission Servants on the website. You can find many Human Care ideas to put in your care nucopias such as hugging, listening, running errands, etc. because Human Care doesn t just mean donating items. Praying is also important, such as for people affected by global disasters. The website also has a link for these and how you can help, the most recent of which is the famine and hunger crisis in East Africa. Keep filling your care nucopias. Pray for ideas, ways to be led to people in need, and for specific ways to help them. Care y that care nucopia with you at all times! Patti Thies, Vice President of Human Care New Items Available from LWML Catalog I want to highlight two products that I bought at the National Convention in Peoria. The new Joyful, Joyful Mustard Seed packet (#40214) just jumped out at me. This packet uses familiar hymns as the basis for Christ-centered devotions and prayers. The various pictures of musical instruments drew me to picking up the packet in the LWML store. This set is $ The Mustard Seeds from this set could be sent with greeting cards, left in your child s lunch box or left with your hotel room tip or restaurant bill. The NEW pearl cluster stretch bracelet (#31008) is a must have for every LWML lady. For $ this beautiful cluster bracelet has simulated purple and clear crystals, simulated purple pearls of various sizes, and silver tone accent charms like a heart, Jesus Fish and the LWML sterling silver charm. It goes great with LWML attire or adds the touch of LWML purple to any outfit. I wore the bracelet the first Sunday following Convention and so many ladies at church noticed it and complimented me on it. I really like that there are no clasps to work; just slip the bracelet on and you are ready to go. Check out both of these items in the new LWML catalog or order online at or LWML. Joy Anderson, Vice President of Servant Resources Christian Life News A Woman in God s Plan was the title of the 2011 LWML Retreat held at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter on July 29 and 30. Each lady was greeted by Registrar Barb Meyer and President Darleen Harens at a table adorned with a beautiful iris bouquet grown in the Meyer garden. Ladies who took advantage of the early check-in enjoyed an ice-breaker session with Barb Fellersen. Opening devotions were led by Rev. Jon Olson on Friday morning. Presentations on the life lived by people during this time in history and how God provided one more piece of the puzzle of His plan of Salvation were led by Counselor Jon Olson on Ruth, Counselor Dale Kohrs on Boaz, and Dr. David Preuss on Naomi. As the ladies reflected on this information they were encouraged to view God working in their lives and to willingly submit to His guidance, even when it is not easy to understand. Thank you to everyone who participated in this event. We look forward to seeing you at future LWML events. Margaret Hohenstein, Vice President of Christian Life

4 PAGE 4 MINNESOTA SOUTH DISTRICT WOMEN ON A MISSION FALL, 2011 ISSUE PRINTED: SEPTEMBER, 2011 Our Mites at Work! Thank you from John Hall, Executive Director Trinity/HOPE Feeding Haitian Children our Mission Grant #1. Mr. Hall thanks us for sponsoring their school, First Lutheran of Les Cayes, where the children can be educated and prepared to lead a productive life. The children are also taught the Good News of Jesus Christ. Seeing the bowls of beans and rice we provide is confirmation to the children of the love of God. With our support, Trinity/HOPE is now providing over 15,000 meals every school day in 86 different Christian schools. Just two years ago that number was closer to 8,700. Two mission teams have gone to Haiti in the past few months to check on the schools and the children. The first mission team concentrated their efforts in the Port au Prince area, visiting four schools and close to 1,000 children. They found a couple of schools were still dealing with earthquake damage, but overall the feeding programs were in great shape. The second mission team visited eleven schools and saw over 1,600 children. This team found the children generally very healthy and learning age appropriate school material. Both teams enjoyed the children telling them Bible stories they had recently learned. Handwritten messages and cards from the children show their gratitude - Merci (Thank you)! Thank you much for the food you have provided us! We thank you very much for the food. May God bless and guide you! Happy Easter. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink,... Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me. Matthew 25:35, 40 ESV Check out their website at: More on Our Mites at Work Seminarians, Karl Yahr (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) and Justin Pahl (St. Louis, MO) wrote notes of thanks for all of our LWML support. From Grant #2, Seminary Student Tuition Assistance for St. Louis and Fort Wayne, to Grants #9 and #10, Concordia Seminary Food Bank (St. Louis) and Food & Clothing Coop (Fort Wayne) both of these men and their families have benefited from our support. With our support of the food bank in St. Louis, Justin Pahl and his wife are very appreciative of our help to offset their cost of groceries. Karl Yahr and his wife have three children with another one on the way; the Fort Wayne Food and Clothing Coop has helped them to save tremendously on the necessities of life. Both of these men attest to the fact that everyone- faculty to student body - benefits from these services. To quote Justin in his closing statement, May God bless you richly in your efforts of delivering the Word to a world in need of Jesus Christ! Check out the Seminary websites at: (St. Louis) and (Fort Wayne) Debi Ylitalo, Vice President of Gospel Outreach Mission Grants Proposals Needed for Biennium Before you know it, the 2012 MN South District LWML Convention will be here. At the Convention a new mite goal will be set. In preparation, the Gospel Outreach Committee is requesting that Mission Grants Proposals be sent to the Vice President of Gospel Outreach by January 15, The Mission Grant Proposal Form, along with the instructions, is located on the Minnesota South District LWML website at Grant proposals may be submitted by LWML individual members, units, zones or conferences, or LCMS-affiliated organizations. Grant proposals should be detailed, giving background information of the needs, including photos relating to the grant proposal. It should also include the grant goals, need for funds and the amount of funds needed. After the project proposals are received, they are studied by the District LWML Gospel Outreach committee, the LWML President and Pastoral Counselors, the MN South District LCMS and the Synodical Mission Board. The final decision is made by vote of the delegates at the next District LWML Convention.

5 PAGE 5 MINNESOTA SOUTH DISTRICT WOMEN ON A MISSION FALL, 2011 ISSUE PRINTED: SEPTEMBER, 2011 CHANGE Change according to the dictionary when defined as a verb would be to make or become different, exchange, give or receive change. Have you ever heard anyone say I haven t changed since yesterday or even in the last ten years? Unbelievable. Change could involve your health, a job, your family situation, for a few examples. We are always changing, only God does not change. Let us consider the themes of some of our LWML activities over the past year or so and how change could or should have occurred in each case. Looking back at our 2010 District LWML Convention where our theme was God s GPS. Turn right at the Light with the Bible passage Thy Word is a Lamp unto my feet and a Light unto my path. Ps. 119:105. Have you changed as you followed the Light? Hopefully we all can say yes, as we have grown in our faith, in our words, and in our actions. Next we consider the 2011 National LWML Convention in Peoria where the theme was Being with JESUS, Living on the Edge where we are to speak of Jesus of whom we ve heard at every chance we get. In attendance were 174 people from Minnesota South ranging in age from 4 to 80 plus. What a great group. During the opening communion service we heard Pastor Klaus talking about commitment what are we doing to help spread the Word? Or the inspirational speaker and singer Miss America 2009 Katie Stam who was so convicted of not doing all she should do after hearing Pastor Klaus s sermon, she completely rewrote her speech. She was so changed. Has anything ever changed you that much that quickly? How are you living on the Edge? What is changing in your life? Are you a Barnababe, an Encourager? Find someone who attended and see if they remember what Barnabas did? How did he live on the edge? The end of July this year, 64 people attended the Retreat on the Gustavus Adophus campus in St. Peter where the theme was A Woman in God s Plan based on the book of Ruth. How did God change Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz? Also how did He change those who attended the retreat? How has he changed you as you continue to read and study His Word? With all of this we look ahead to the future and the 2012 District LWML Convention where the theme will be Extreme YOU Makeover based on Eph.2:8a, 10a ESV For by grace you have been saved through faith For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works. As you grow in faith, you should be changing and growing in His glory. Are you changing? Throughout our life we have opportunities to change. Some steps we can take to make us more ready to do His work are to be daily in the Word, exercise our bodies, be patient and relax around people, take time for yourself, and get plenty of rest to enable you to do all He wants you to do. When you put yourself in God s hands He will guide you so that when change comes you will grow in Him more and more. Change is inevitable, as one saying is Let Go, Let God. To God be the Glory. Blessings to each of you, Darleen Harens, MN SO District LWML President From the Pastoral Counselor... A DEVOTION FOR THE 2012 CONVENTION THEME THE EXTREME YOU MAKEOVER. His Workmanship For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10. ESV One day, I felt a tug on the vacuum. My little two year old daughter wanted to help. Suddenly it took double the time to vacuum the house. I really did all the work as she was so small. I just loved the fact that she loved to spend time with me. If God can instantly throw together universes and direct an eternal agenda for every atom, does He really need us to get His daily chores done? No. Our lives are all about God and His joyful labors that He loves to share with us. As the Father of fathers, He loves the child-like heart within us. In fact, it is the heart of His own Son that has been transplanted into us. Even though He could do everything mightily and gloriously in a moment, He loves to share His work with us and through us. He takes all our freedoms in His love and puts them in a larger plan of His love for all. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we are empowered to rejoice in this truth as a little girl lovingly and proudly vacuums alongside her daddy. Holy Father, thank You for sharing Your labors and joys with Your children, this day and always. Amen. Rev. Jon Vollrath, Pastoral Counselor

6 PAGE 6 MINNESOTA SOUTH DISTRICT WOMEN ON A MISSION FALL, 2011 ISSUE PRINTED: SEPTEMBER, 2011 May Lo, Young Woman Representative, Convention Report Thank you MN South District, for giving me this magnificent experience in Living on the Edge with the LWML National Convention 2011 in Peoria, IL. I had a miraculous time. There was so much liveliness and love all around; everywhere I turned, arms were wrapping around me with hugs. It was truly a mountain top experience being able to see all the beauties of what God created; beautiful women from all walks of life and backgrounds. A special thank you to my congregation King of Kings Lutheran Church in Roseville, MN and especially to our society Women Alive in Christ, Deb Schultz and Iris Curtis. Thank you both for your encouragements and willingness to serve the Lord. You came to me with great confidence that I would be chosen as the YWR rep for MN South and in your confidences it led me to a life changing event. Many thanks also to the YWR Task Force Team: Anne Hartman, Brandi Bucholz, and Mimi Shum! They gave us all sparks throughout the whole Convention from early morning until late into the night. We truly could not have asked for a better team to help guide us. God truly knows and puts us where we are needed to be. In my case it was to meet Deb Burma our keynote speaker. I was given the opportunity to sit in for a special luncheon where she shared her story of how God called her and her family. Not only did she answer a lot of my unanswered questions, she also gave me the courage to move forward. She shared the life of a seminary wife and how God equips the call. She titled her speech to us, Equip, Encourage, and Excite. She has definitely done that for me! Her conclusion was, You can do this! Not only did I get to meet her for a brief moment along with everyone else, God gave me another opportunity with her. We ran into each other again before leaving for the airport and that sparked an astonishing conversation reinforcing that I Can Do It. Katie Stam, Miss America was also a great inspiration to me as well. Seeing her tears in humbleness made me also look at myself and my conviction. My walk with the Lord has not been as often as it should be, but after the Convention I have started walking again and look forward to running with my Lord in spreading the good news of how much He loves me. The testimonies of how much lives were changed all because of those little Mite Boxes made me realize and appreciate how much more even a penny is worth. All the witnessing from speakers, Bible studies, hymns, and fellowship have truly equipped, encouraged, and excited me!!! Blessings to Darleen Harens, Amy Vincelli, Nicoleen Meyer, and Joy Anderson for all your love and supports. In Christ, May Lo Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!! To all who donated socks and blankets for the Servant Event. Even though the Servant Event was cancelled, your generous donations shared the love of Jesus with many in need. The socks went to the Sock Lady for Gospel Union to give to the men after washing their feet, and other supplies went to Bethlehem Lutheran Church and School in St. Paul. Truly God works all things for good for those who love Him. PARLIAMENTARY PAUSE Meetings of the Lutheran Women s Missionary League are marked by good order, guided by God s Word, and upheld in prayer. Using parliamentary procedures consistently will results in the following: courtesy to all, one item considered at a time, the majority will rule, the minority will be heard, absent member s rights will be protected, with partiality to no one, fairness to all. 7 PAGE 7 MINNESOTA SOUTH DISTRICT WOMEN ON A MISSION FALL, 2011 ISSUE PRINTED: SEPTEMBER, 2011 Mary Kay Mages, Young Woman Representative, Convention Report Being with Jesus Living on the Edge! The theme of the 2011 National LWML Convention played itself out in Peoria, Illinois throughout the four-day gathering of LWML women. Many of the women I met or heard at the Convention are the Face of LWML! The delegate from Pasadena, Texas shared with me how her flight to Peoria had been cancelled. Since waiting for the next available flight would have meant arriving at the Convention a day late, this fearless 70-year-old asked her daughter to punch the Convention address into her vehicle GSP system. She set out driving an unknown route, across unknown states, en route to Peoria. As a woman who refuses to let a travel glitch keep her away from LWML, this little old lady from Pasadena (driving a Buick) is Living on the Edge and is the Face of LWML. A missionary speaker serving in Africa told Convention goers about her weekly Bible study with an unlikely group of women prostitutes. With her courage to reach out to the fringes of society, this missionary is Living on the Edge and is the Face of LWML. I spent Convention sessions sitting next to one of our Minnesota South delegates who uses puppets and clowning to share the Gospel with children. Dressed up in costume and donning face paint, this Minnesota Lutheran woman is Living on the Edge and is the Face of LWML. One of the Young Woman Representative program coordinators is active and thriving in LWML even though her own congregation does not have an LWML group. She collects mites, studies her Bible, supports missions and even takes a national leadership role without the support of a local society. With perseverance in isolation she is Living on the Edge and is the Face of LWML. Another Young Woman Representative started a new LWML society in her congregation several years after the original LWML society disbanded. This new, young society president is Living on the Edge and is the Face of LWML. The women elected to national offices took their oaths of office with solemn excitement and enthusiasm for the future of LWML. The women who ran for but were not elected to national offices were not forlorn! They realized that a national LWML office is not what God had in mind for them at this time, and they were eager to learn and discern how they might best go on serving the Lord with Gladness in other roles. The newly elected and the un-elected are Living on the Edge and are the Face of LWML. On the last morning of the Convention, Sunday morning, in this midst of all these Faces of LWML women Living on the Edge I had one thing on my mind: I wanted to connect with my home congregation and share with my dear brothers and sisters in Christ all the joy and excitement I was experiencing! I decided to phone in a prayer request in thanks for the national LWML, in thanks for our local LWML society and for safe travels home that afternoon. I decided to call forty-five minutes before our morning worship service. I expected our pastor would answer the phone, in his office, while polishing his sermon. But do you know who answered my phone call? Our pastor? Nope. It was an LWML member, in the kitchen, making coffee! I should have known! I had been surrounded by the Face of LWML Living on the Edge all week and here was another Face of LWML Living on the Edge! Arriving at church early and faithfully serving the daily needs of her fellow parishioners, this early-rising, coffeemaking LWML member is Living on the Edge and is the Face of LWML! And what ties together all these diverse Faces of LWML Living on the Edge? What makes wearing clown make-up, making coffee, losing an election or reaching out to prostitutes Living on the Edge? Being with Jesus! LWML women relish Being with Jesus. We study our Bibles. We savor the Sacrament. We stretch and grow in our faith even as we endure marital strife, family conflict, professional set-backs and social pressures. We are sinners in a sinful world. And yet, we are constantly yearning for Being with Jesus. And we cannot but respond to Being with Jesus by Living on the Edge. Women Being with Jesus, Living on the Edge that s the Face of LWML. Thank you for the opportunity to be one of your Young Woman Representatives to the 2011 Convention Being with Jesus Living the Edge. Thank you for allowing me to join you all as another faithful Face of LWML. Mary Kay Mages, Young Woman Representative YWR Applications for 2012 District LWML Convention The Young Woman Representative applications for the District Convention are available from your zone president or on the Minnesota South District LWML website ( These applications are to be sent to your Zone President by February 1, If every zone sends a YWR to the Convention, there will be 24 YWRs in attendance. Societies may also send YWRs to the Convention.
