THINK INTERNATIONaL Lesson 1 (45 minute lesson) Print out puzzle. Cut apart puzzle pieces. Write one number from 1-6 on the back of each puzzle piece in the order that follows: 1- Peoples of Northern India 2- Peoples of Ethiopia 3- Berber People of North Africa 4- Vietnamese of Cambodia 5- Peoples of Iran 6- Lost Cities of China Hide 6 of the 8 puzzle pieces throughout the room. Do not hide the puzzle pieces labeled Lottie Moon Christmas Offering and International Mission Board. Locate the countries/regions on the world map prior to the lesson. Print out a copy of How it Works for each child. NOTE: the coloring pages are for younger children and the activity pages are for older children. Starter Activity (5 minutes) Puzzle pieces (download at: imb.org/lessonsforchildren) World map (download at: imb.org/lessonsforchildren) *The countries and regions you will use are outlined on the map. Welcome the children as they arrive and ask them to take a seat. Show the children a puzzle piece that was not hidden. Tell them to find the six other puzzle pieces hidden throughout the room. When the six pieces are located, Say: Look at the people on the puzzle pieces. These people are from international countries. Today s story tells about people from international countries. The story will help you understand what international countries are. Show the world map. Point out North America. Say: For you and me, international countries are countries outside of the United States. Although people from international countries are from countries outside of the United States, they may live in other areas. They may live in the country their people are from or they may live in other countries. They could even live in the United States. Ask: What are countries outside of the United States called? (international countries) Story (20-25 minutes) Pushpins Activity/coloring page, How it Works (download at imb.org/lessonsforchildren) Pencils/crayons Marker Ask the child with puzzle piece number 1 (Peoples of Northern India) to stand up and show it to the children. Say: This man is from India. Ask: What kind of country is India? (an international country) Does this mean people like this man can live only in India? (No, they could live anywhere. His people are from Northern India.) Continue: He has never heard the name of Jesus. Some people in India who have heard about Jesus are afraid to follow Him since following Jesus might not be safe for them. (Put the puzzle piece on the appropriate country with a pushpin.) Ask the child with puzzle piece number 2 (Peoples of Ethiopia) to Encourage the children to be attentive during the story. Let them know they will say international countries throughout most of the story to help them understand what international countries are. But tell them to listen carefully as their response will change halfway through the story. stand up and show it to the children. Say: This girl is from Ethiopia. Ask: What kind of country is Ethiopia? (an international country) Does this mean people like this girl live only in Ethiopia? (No, they could live anywhere. Their people are from Ethiopia.) 1

2 THINK INTERNATIONaL Story cont. Continue: She lives in a country where a lot of people die young from sickness. People of Ethiopia need to know Jesus loves them before they die. (Put the puzzle piece on the appropriate country with a pushpin.) Ask the child with puzzle piece number 3 (Berber People of North Africa) to stand up and show it to the children. Say: This man is from North Africa. Ask: What kind of area is North Africa? (The children may respond in saying international country as said previously. Correct them as follows.) Continue: Actually, North Africa is not a specific country. This area is called a region since it is not made up of one country but several countries. It is an international region. Ask: What kind of area is North Africa? (an international region) Continue: The Berber people of North Africa do not have material to read that tells them about Jesus. (Put the puzzle piece on the appropriate area with a pushpin.) Ask the child with puzzle piece number 4 (Vietnamese of Cambodia) to stand up and show it to the children. Say: This little girl lives in Cambodia. Ask: What kind of country is Cambodia? (an international country) Say: These Vietnamese are from the country of Vietnam. However, they live in Cambodia. This is a good example of how some people groups live in different areas from their homeland. Continue: The Vietnamese of Cambodia are mostly fishermen. They live on the water in floating villages. That makes it hard to get to them to tell them about Jesus. (Put the puzzle piece on the appropriate country with a pushpin.) Ask the child with puzzle piece number 5 (Peoples of Iran) to stand up and show it to the children. Say: This woman is from Iran. Ask: What kind of country is Iran? (an international country) Continue: The government in Iran does not allow people to be Christians. If people in Iran leave their religion to follow Jesus, they can get in a lot of trouble. They can lose their job, go to prison and even be put to death. (Put the puzzle piece on the appropriate country with a pushpin.) Ask the child with puzzle piece number 6 (Lost Cities of China) to stand up and show it to the children. Say: This baby is from China. Ask: What kind of country is China? (an international country) Continue: People from the country come to work in the city. There are so many people in the city but not enough people there to tell the Chinese about Jesus. (Put the puzzle piece on the appropriate country with a pushpin.) Continue: All these people live in international countries. They represent a lot more people than this. There are over one and a half billion other people just like them who have never had the chance to hear the Good News of Jesus. Say: All these people you heard about and more than one and a half billion more need to hear about Jesus. Continue: In Matthew 18:11, Jesus says, For the Son of Man has come to save the lost (HCSB). This verse is talking about those more than one and a half billion people who have not had the chance to hear about Jesus. Ask: Do you think there is anything you can do to help them hear about Jesus? (Allow the children to respond.) Continue: There is something you can do. Your church is already doing something to reach people from international countries and regions. Since you are in a Southern Baptist church you can also be a part of helping people hear about Jesus. Continue: This is how it works. Southern Baptists send missionaries to international places to live with the people. (Point to the various puzzle pieces on the world map.) The missionaries are known as international missionaries. They are able to live in these places since Southern Baptists support them through IMB, which stands for International Mission Board. (Put the puzzle piece labeled International Mission Board at the top of the world map.) Say: Southern Baptist churches, like this one, give offerings and send it to IMB. This offering is known as (hold up the puzzle piece labeled Lottie Moon Christmas Offering ) the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. (Put the puzzle piece underneath International Mission Board. ) Continue: All the money from these offerings is sent to international missionaries in the different international countries or regions. This way they can live among the people of the area and tell them about Jesus. Draw a line with the black marker from the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering puzzle piece to each puzzle piece on the map. Say: Let s see if you understand how it works. Distribute How it Works to the children to put in order or to color. When the children complete the activity, ask volunteers to tell how the process works from church to missionaries.

THINK INTERNATIONaL Lesson 1 Pull the puzzle pieces off the map. Place each puzzle piece on a different place on the walls in your room. Video (5 minutes) Lottie Moon to Me video (download at imb.org/lmcovideo or view from the Children s Leader s DVD) Say: IMB calls the offering they receive from Southern Baptist churches the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. Here s why... Show the video clip, Lottie Moon to Me or share this story: Lottie Moon was born and raised in America. She had a deep ache in her heart to tell the people in China about Jesus. At a young age, she moved to China to live among the Chinese people. Do Your Part (10 minutes) Say: You may not be old enough now to go across the world and tell others about Jesus. But, like Lottie, you can do your part to help spread the Good News of Jesus with people who live in international countries. Point to the puzzle pieces on the map. Say: These pieces do not make a complete puzzle. There are many missing pieces. You could be one of the missing pieces. You can help complete the puzzle by doing your part. Pray Tell the children to go to different puzzle pieces. Encourage them to pray for the international country, region and the international people. Tell them after they have prayed at one place to move In China, she became one of them. She told them of Jesus. She shared His love. She shared her food when there was little food to be found. She lived the rest of her life in China. When she got older, Lottie became sick and needed to come back to America. She died on the boat on her way home. After the video or story, say: In Lottie Moon s day, there was not an international missions offering. So, Lottie Continue: There are four ways you can help. One way is through giving. You can give your allowance or money you have earned. Say: You can also give your time to raise money for your church s international missions offering. Continue: Another way is to pray. You can pray for the people who have not heard about Jesus and pray for the missionaries who are trying to reach them. to another puzzle piece and pray for that area. Suggest the children move quietly and pray silently or quietly and simultaneously. Allow 5 minutes for this interactive praying. Moon wrote many letters asking Southern Baptist churches to send and support missionaries. Because of one of her letters, the Southern Baptist Christmas offering for missions was started. The first offering was enough to send three missionaries to China! Because of her hard work, the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering is named after her. Ask: So what will you do to help those who are missing out on hearing the name of Jesus? Continue: There are at least four things you can do. You can give money. You can give your time. You can pray. You can go. Today you can do your part by praying. See kompray.imb.org for more prayer requests from missionary kids around the world! 3

This offering is known as the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. From here, the money is sent to international missionaries. 5

Lesson 2 (30 minute lesson) Starter Activity (5 minutes) 1 LOving the lost Display world map. Cue Canary Islands Geographic Locator video or locate Canary Islands on the world map. (Look at the Atlantic Ocean northwest of the African continent.) As the kids arrive, ask them to form a circle. Start the game by saying: I went to the beach and I lost my. The child beside you will say: I went to the beach and I lost my (whatever Story (5 minutes) you said) and will add an item to it. Each person in succession must do the same by naming all the items before saying the item he lost. This goes around the circle until a player misses. Begin again with the next player in line. Say: All of us have lost things before. In today s lesson, you will learn another way the word lost is used. It s the lost people Jesus was talking about in Matthew 18:11 when He said, For the Son of Man has come to save the lost (HCSB). Canary Islands Geographic Locator video (download at imb.org/lmcovideo or view from the Children s Leader s DVD) or World Map (download at imb.org/lessonsforchildren) NOTE: this map might already be displayed from Lesson 1 Say: Many lost people live in the Canary Islands. Play Canary Islands Geographic Locator video or share this story and use the world map: The Canary Islands may be hard to find on a map even though there are seven islands. (Point to the seven Canary Islands.) Although the islands are close to Africa they belong to Spain. (Point to Africa and Spain.) Many people from Spain come to the Canary Islands on vacation. The Canary Islands are known as the Happy Islands. Maybe it s because of the beautiful beaches and other fun things there are to do on vacation. But the people on vacation are not the only ones who live here. Many people come from north and west African countries hoping to find a better life. But that is not always what they find. Especially for those who do not know the language. Continue: That s where Pepe and Shari Lopez (names changed) come in. They are missionaries who live on the Canary Islands. Since the islands belong to Spain, the language of the islands is Spanish. Say: Pepe and Shari offer English/ Spanish classes to help those who do not know the language. This is a way for them to connect with people who come to the islands from Africa. In Africa, these people did not have freedom to learn about Jesus. Since they have not heard about Jesus, they are lost. But in the Canary Islands, Pepe and Shari have the freedom to help these lost people find their way to Jesus.

LOving the lost Lesson 2 Print out a copy of What Can You Give? page for each child. If necessary, contact the church staff for a date to have a churchwide yard sale. Secure a room in the church for donations to be stored until the yard sale. NOTE: the coloring pages are for younger children and the activity pages are for older children. Video (5 minutes) Candra in Canary video (download at imb.org/lmcovideo or view from the Children s Leader s DVD) Say: Although there are many lost people on the Canary Islands, they do not know they are lost. Since they don t realize they are lost, or missing out on knowing Jesus personally, some do not want to hear what Christians have to say. Show video, Candra in Canary or share this story: Say: Candra Pennington spent six months in the Canary Islands working at an English camp for kids. Because some people living on the islands do not always want to be friends with Christians, Candra had to show them God s love without expecting anything in return. She did this by cranking up the fun. The kids practiced their English with Candra and other camp leaders. She Do Your Part (15 minutes) Activity/coloring page, What Can You Give? (download at imb.org/lessonsforchildren) Pencils/crayons Say: Candra did something about the lost people in the Canary Islands. She gave six months of her life. Ask: So what will you give to help those who don t know about Jesus love? Continue: There are at least four things you can do for missions. You can give money. You can give your time. You can pray. You can go. Say: Today you can do your part by giving your time like Candra. Give your Time Ask the children if they would be willing to give their time to raise money for their church s international missions offering. Let them know that children do not usually have their own money to give. However, children usually have more than enough toys or clothes. Present the idea of a churchwide yard sale. Tell them they can sponsor the yard sale. Explain this includes collecting, sorting, labeling and selling items church members may give and whatever the children give. Tell them the money raised from the yard sale will go to IMB. Tell the children the date of the yard sale. Let them know how long they have to collect items. Say: The activity/coloring page will help you think about what you can give. Distribute What Can You Give pages to the children to decode or color. After they have decoded or colored the activity/coloring page, talk about giving their best and not just giving out-grown clothes or useless toys. Share the following story: and the campers played a lot of games, sang and had fun. The kids loved that Candra came from America to talk to them and play with them. Once they spent time with her, they realized the love she had for them was special. When the kids asked why Candra cared so much about them, she could tell them it was all because of Jesus. By simply loving the kids, opportunities came up that allowed her to share her love for Jesus and Jesus love for them. Every year a woman goes into her closet. She looks at all the shirts, pants, dresses and shoes she has. Her clothes are hung up in a large closet. She picks through them until she finds her favorite outfit. She takes her favorite outfit out of the closet. She prays to God to use what she has for others to know Him. Then, she joyfully takes her favorite outfit to a local clothes closet. Say: You see she wants to give God her best. Think about that as you gather clothes and toys for the yard sale. Ask them to look at their toys or clothes and see what they would be willing to give up for the yard sale. Allow them to tell what they might bring if they are willing. Encourage them to start bringing in the toy(s) or clothes next week. 2

Lesson 3 (45 minute lesson) Starter Activity (5 minutes) Masking tape Cones, bean bag, any similar item 1 REACH OUT With the tape, mark an X in the middle of a playing area. NOTE: For small groups, this activity can be done with as few as two children. Print out a copy of Barriers page for each child. Write one of each of the following countries on an index card. Write the number in parenthesis in small print on a corner of the card: (1) Iraq, (2) Romania, (3) South Africa, (4) Guinea, (5) France, (6) Japan, (7) Mali, (8) Poland, (9) Afghanistan, (10) India. Put the cards in a bag. NOTE: the coloring pages are for younger children and the activity pages are for older children. Form two teams. Be sure to evenly distribute the weight of the children so neither side will be able to easily pull the other. Choose one person from each team to place his or her right foot beside the line at the center of the X. They should be side by side facing opposite directions. Ask those two to link arms. Tell the other children to link arms with Story (20 minutes) Activity/coloring page, Barriers (download at imb.org/lessonsforchildren) Pencils/crayons Index cards Marker Lunch bag Say: The activity/coloring page tells what some of the barriers are. We will go over each barrier when you finish. Distribute Barriers pages to the children to work on. After the children have worked on the Barriers page, explain each barrier that stops others from being reached for Christ: Some people live in places that are hard to reach. Some people live a four-day hike up a mountain trail or a three-day paddle down a jungle river. one another and connect with the player standing on the X. Suggest the children clasp their hands together to help them stay linked. Place the item barely out of reach for each team. At the signal, each team should pull in an attempt to reach the item. After one of the teams has reached the item, ask the children to sit down. Some people live where it s hard to live. Some people have homes with no heat in the winter. Others have so much pollution in their city that it darkens the sky every day and there is so much traffic that getting across town may take hours. Outsiders have to have a pretty good reason to go there. (Explain that outsiders are any people that do not belong to the community. They are those who come in from outside of a community.) Say: In this game, you tried to reach an item. Continue: There are some people in the world who are not easy to reach. Since they have not been reached they have not heard about Jesus. They have never heard because it is hard for Christians to get to them. There are barriers, which are things that stop them from reaching these people for Christ. Colored pushpins (10) World map (download at imb.org/lessonsforchildren) NOTE: This map might already be displayed from Lesson 1. The countries you will use are numbered on the map. Some people live where there is little freedom. The government does not allow any information to be shared other than what they decide. Only a select few are allowed to speak about religion. Some people have leaders who do not want outsiders. Even caring leaders may be afraid that someone outside of their area might want to change the way they do things. Especially if they feel what they are doing has worked for a long time.

Lesson 3 Story cont. 2 REACH OUT Cue Beans on Toast video. Some people live where there are no resources. Some areas have no churches for hundreds of miles. Their language may never have been written down so they have no Bible stories in their language. Say: Although there are difficulties in reaching some people, one way God is allowing missionaries to reach these people is by bringing those hard-to-reach people to places where they can be reached. Continue: This is happening in London. Many people who were not able to be reached before now live in London. They are from many, many different countries. Ask the children to take turns pulling out one index card at a time from the bag. When they pull out a card, help them pronounce the name of the country. Give them a pushpin to put the index card on the map at the corresponding number from the back of the card. Video (5 minutes) Items Needed: Beans on Toast video (download at imb.org/lmcovideo or view from the Children s Leader s DVD) Show the video, Beans on Toast or share this story: The English have a recipe that is popular among them. It is beans on toast and it s easy to make. The English like to eat this for breakfast. First, you open a can of beans in tomato sauce. Warm the beans up in a pot. While the beans are heating up, toast two pieces of bread. When the bread is toasted, spread butter on each slice. Spoon the beans on the top of each piece of toast. You can add shredded cheese on top of the beans and enjoy! Continue until all cards have been pulled and the countries have all been named and identified on the map. Say: You identified 10 different countries. But there are almost 200 different countries that people are from who now live in one place London. Over 300 different languages are spoken in this city. Although these people may not have been reached in the country they came from, they now can be reached in London.

Lesson 3 3 Do Your Part (15 minutes) REACH OUT Say: We ve been talking about all the different people who have moved to London. They bring with them many different languages, cultures and even favorite recipes! Although beans on toast is a popular food for the English, there are many other kinds of foods in London, just like there are many different kinds of food where we live. Continue: Think about the restaurants in our city or in a large city near us. Go Construction paper Marker CD and CD player Ask: What type of food is common where we live? (For example, a common food for Southern states might be barbeque; New England states clam chowder, etc.) Ask: Although there may be a common food that is popular in our area, how many other kinds of foods are in our city? (Help the children think of international restaurants.) Say: The variety of foods in our city proves that we also have many different people where we live. These people may be lost and need to know about Jesus. Continue: Jesus said in Matthew 18:11, For the Son of Man has come to save the lost (HCSB). Ask: So what will you do to reach the lost for Jesus? Continue: There are at least four things you can do. You can give money. You can give your time. You can pray. You can go. Today you can do your part by going. Say: You have learned there are many people around the world who have never heard the Good News of Jesus. But there are also people in your life who do not know that Jesus loves them. Ask: Who are people that you can tell about Jesus? As the children name specific people, write each one on a separate piece of construction paper (parents, grandparents, siblings, neighbors, friends, teachers, bus driver, grocery clerk, waiter/waitress, etc.). Write enough so each child will have a piece of construction paper; duplicate if necessary. This game is like a cakewalk. Place the pieces of construction paper in a circle on the floor. Play a song for seconds. When the music stops, each child should stand on a sheet of construction paper. Ask each child to silently read what they are standing on. Suggest they think of someone they know, as indicated on the sheet, who does not know about the love of Jesus. Play several rounds. Suggest the children tell one of the people they thought of about Jesus. Let the children know simply telling them Jesus loves them is a great way to share the Good News. Close out the activity in prayer.

Barriers Activity 4 REACH OUT Barriers keep some people from hearing about Jesus. 1 Begin at the star and cross out every other letter. The first letter was done for you. 2 Write the remaining letters in order in the blanks in the middle. o a u p t w s h i r d ce m r q s v n g o a r l e r s p od u m r l c w e f s Some people live in places that are. 15 Give What ya Got! Lesson 4 (30 minute lesson) Cue Heart Art video. Starter Activity (5 minutes) Pennies, one per child Demonstrate the activity for the children. Show them how to bend their arm so their elbow is horizontal. Place a penny on top of the elbow. With one quick, sweeping motion, try to grab the penny by cupping the hand of the same arm holding the penny. Story (5 minutes) Give a penny to each child. Encourage them to try. After they have had a few moments to attempt the task, suggest those who were able to complete the task with one penny should now try the task with two pennies. Heart Art video (download at imb.org/lmcovideo or view from the Children s Leader s DVD) Play video, Heart Art or read the following story: Rebecca Foster is a typical kid just like you. She loves to climb trees and do gymnastics. But she also loves missions. She wants to be a missionary who sings, teaches preschool and does art. Since she loves missions and art, she decided to combine those two and raise money for her church s international missions offering. For two years now, Rebecca has used her art skills to make Christmas cards. She sells them to people at her church and in her community. Last year, she made over 800 cards! Her family joins in and helps her out. Her younger brother helps by putting stars on the cards. Her dad handles the printing. Her mom After a reasonable amount of time, say: This was a fun money game. You will learn about a young girl who did not have her own money, but that didn t stop her. She got creative and found a way she could give to her church s international missions offering. helps glue and whatever else Rebecca needs help with. God said to tell all nations about Him. Rebecca is doing what God asked her to do. Every dollar she gives to the offering goes to missionaries in all nations. 1

Lesson 4 2 Give What ya Got! Cue video, MK Shout-out (Robert Morris). Print out a copy of Lottie Moon at Work page for each child. NOTE: the coloring pages are for younger children and the activity pages are for older children. Video (5 minutes) MK Shout-out (Robert Morris) video (download at imb.org/lmcovideo or view from the Children s Leader s DVD) Activity/coloring page, Lottie Moon at Work (download at imb.org/lessonsforchildren) Pencils/crayons Say: You may wonder how missionaries use the money from the offering from churches. Continue: In today s video, a missionary kid explains how the offering affects his family. Play video, MK Shout-out (Robert Morris) or share this story: Robert Morris is 16 years old and lives in South Africa. Robert says thank you for giving to missions. The offering pays Robert s parents so they can live in South Africa as missionaries. Do Your Part (15 minutes) Say: Rebecca challenges all kids to find one of your talents and use it to do something for the missions offering. Continue: Although you may not be an artist like Rebecca, God has given you a talent. Ask: Do you like to sing, bake, dance or climb trees? Their paycheck allows Robert to go to one of the oldest schools in South Africa. It is an all boys school. Robert loves his school. The offering also helps his family get out to the people and tell them about Jesus. They wouldn t be able to get to the people if they didn t have a car. They wouldn t be able to drive the car if they didn t have gas. The offering pays for these things and more. Because of the offering Robert s family is able to focus on reaching South Africa for Jesus. Say: Like Rebecca, think of a way you can use what God has given you to help raise money for your church s missions offering. Ask: So what will you do to help missionaries who are telling the Good News of Jesus Christ to all nations? Continue: Remember, there are at least four things you can do. Say: The missions offering is the paycheck for missionaries. It pays for missionaries to have a place to live, food to eat, and many other things so that they are free to tell others about Jesus. Continue: You can find out more ways missionaries use the missions offering by going to the Lottie Moon at Work Web site. IMB calls the international missions offering the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. You can go to the Web site with your parents to read stories about the missionaries. Here is an activity you can do right now to learn more ways the offering is used. Distribute Lottie Moon at Work page for the children to work. Ask: What are the four things? (You can give money. You can give your time. You can pray. You can go.) Say: Today you learned you can do your part by giving money. You will make a bank to put the money to give to your church s international missions offering.

Give What ya Got! Lesson 4 Activity Make a sample container by following the instructions: Cut a piece of construction paper to wrap around the container. Tape or glue the paper to the container. Write the words of Matthew 18:11 on the puzzle pieces. For the Son of Man has come to save the lost. Glue the puzzle pieces onto the container. Decorate the construction paper using the markers. Cut a slit in the lid. Give (5 minutes) Container with lid for each child (oatmeal container or a potato chip container) Construction paper Scissors Tape Glue Colored pencils Large puzzle pieces Hold up one of the puzzle pieces. Remind the children a puzzle is not complete with missing pieces. Encourage them to be a part in completing the puzzle by doing their part. Tell them they can do their part by giving money to their church s international missions offering. Show the children the sample you made and the material you gathered. Encourage them to be creative in making their banks. As they make their banks talk about ways to earn money to put in their bank to give to the offering. 3
