1 The bi-monthly magazine of the Broadside Parishes of Ranworth with Panxworth, South Walsham, Upton and Woodbastwick January & February 2012 Dear Friends, Do you have any memories of the 1960s? I was only seven when the Sixties ended and my own recollections are a bit of a jumble. I can recall technological stuff such as the first moon landing, the Harrier jump-jet and Concorde. There were the Beatles, Herman s Hermits, the Rolling Stones and the glow that came with British pop s global domination (not to mention Rolf Harris). There were snazzy cars like Mini Coopers and E-Type Jags, and stylish capers featuring James Bond and the Avengers. Dr. Who made us crouch behind the sofa. The Vietnam War seemed endless and Biafra s agony was intense. Inevitably there will be much that I ve long since forgotten. However, there is much about the Sixties I never knew about. Swinging London didn t stretch as far as the end of the District Line where we lived. Little swung in Upminster, except the church bells and play equipment at the Recreation Ground. So I was interested recently to pick up a history book entitled White Heat: A History of Britain in the Swinging Sixties by Dominic Sandbrook. World Cup Willie Mascot of the 1966 World Cup Campaign White Heat has helped fill in my memory gaps and understanding of a decade that shaped so much in contemporary Britain. Take the 1966 World Cup, for example. This marked the beginning of our country s passion for international football and provided the benchmark for every England team since. I was only four at the time of England s dramatic Wembley victory and didn t watch the match, but recall John Noakes showing World Cup stamps overprinted with England Winners on Blue Peter. Until I read White Heat I hadn t heard of Pickles the dog who found the stolen World Cup in a South London garden, earning himself a year s supply of dog food and his owner a 3,000 reward. This is the stuff that history is made of! Anthony Howard, who worked as a journalist throughout the 1960s, describes Sandbrook s book as a substantial contribution to the understanding of the social and political history of modern Britain. I m afraid you won t be able to borrow White Heat from me yet, as I m still less than half way through its eight hundred pages. However, you can buy it from a remainder shop in the Castle Mall for a very Sixties price, slightly less than a fiver. One fact that astounded me wasn t written by the author and can be found just inside the cover Dominic Sandbrook was born in He had even less experience than I did of his chosen subject, yet wrote with great insight. In this sense, Sandbrook shares much with the writers of the four gospels. They lived after the period they were writing about, drawing together diverse material derived from eye-witness accounts and the earliest collections of Jesus sayings, known as targums. Hundreds, possibly thousands of these gospels were written in the two centuries after Jesus resurrection, but just four, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, were judged by the Church s bishops to offer authentic portraits of Jesus and formed part of the New Testament. It is continued on page 2 PASTORAL CARE CONTACT DETAILS PLEASE SEE PAGE 2

2 generally believed that Mark s gospel was the earliest of these, written somewhere between AD Like Sandbrook, Mark wasn t an eyewitness of his subject. But early writers such as Bishop Papias stated that Mark knew the apostle Peter, and had translated Peter s account into Greek, and editing them to make an orderly account of the Lord s sayings... For he had one purpose only to omit nothing of what he heard, and to state nothing falsely. Material from Mark s gospel was used by Matthew and Luke in constructing their slightly different accounts. Neither copies the terse, breathless style of this, the shortest of the gospels. In Tom Wright s words, Mark was a man in a hurry, presenting the zip and punch of a quick story that s meant to grab you by the collar and make you face the truth about Jesus, about God and about yourself. During 2012 we will hear from Mark s gospel almost every week in church, but you can read it for yourself if you have a couple of hours to spare. Or you could join us on Tuesday evenings as we open up Mark using Tom Wright s new guide over the next couple of months. I began with a reflection on the Sixties and how, for better and worse, that decade set the agenda for those that have followed. The Queen s Diamond Jubilee and this summer s Olympics are likely to shape this new year. It s a happy coincidence that 2012 is the year of Mark. The pace of Mark s gospel and its demands for immediate response seem appropriate for an Olympic year. As we look back on England s unforeseen triumph at the World Cup staged in London forty six years ago, history tells us to expect the unexpected. I think Mark would agree with that. With best wishes for the year ahead, Nick Garrard Thank you to everyone who helped to organise and supported our Benefice events and services over Advent and Christmas and to all who generously contributed to our appeals for the Children s Society, Norfolk Social Services, Hope for Justice, the East Anglian Air Ambulance, East Anglian Children s Hospice and all the other good causes to the Benefice Choir for their Christmas Miscellany at St. Lawrence s in aid of the Upton Organ Appeal to Lee Smith for raising funds for our churches with the Christmas Hamper raffle and to Helen Thurtle and Charles Cator who both held fund raising events for Ranworth Church... 3 Sunday Plus Sunday Plus star ts up again on January 22 nd. It would be great to welcome some new faces and to hear what everyone had been up to over the Christmas period. We offer a very warm welcome to children of all ages and accompanying adults are welcome to take par t in activities or join us for coffee and pastries and Sunday papers from 10 am to 12 noon. February s Sunday Plus will be on the 26th, when we re expecting a special visitor! Tuesday Evenings The Tuesday Group starts up again in the New Year with lively discussion on current affairs from Christian perspectives and a guided tour of Mark s gospel based on Tom Wright s study guide. All events begin at the Rectory at 7.45pm on the following dates: January 10 th, 17 th, 24 th, 31 st, February 7 th, 21 st, 28 th. Farewell Archdeacon David... After ten years service as our Archdeacon, David Hayden will retire at the end of February. We give thanks for David s oversight and pastoral care and his support of the Church s ministry to visitors. There will be a farewell service for David and Ruby at Norwich Cathedral on February 12 th at 3.30pm, followed by a presentation. Please contact me for further details. We wish David and Ruby a long and happy retirement in his native Oulton Broad.... and welcome Bishop Alan Every two years or so, our Benefice receives a Visitation from either the Archdeacon of Norfolk or Bishop of Thetford. On February 26 th we welcome Alan Winton, our Area Bishop, who will conduct his first Visitation here. This will begin with a Benefice Communion service at St. Mary s South Walsham at 11am. Bishop Alan is a lively and engaging preacher and we can look forward to his words and presidency at the service. Afterwards he will meet our churchwardens and PCC members Thank you to our distributors As far as records show the current style of Broadsider, began as a Benefice project in February 2000 although Tony Potter has collected copies of Broadsider since 1990 and it is good that somebody has seen fit to save these copies because the magazine has provided a social report over the years. In it s Benefice format we must be somewhere around 100 issues mark! During this time our distributors have shown a huge community spirit and commitment and have delivered a copy of each issue to every household in South Walsham, Upton, Panxworth, Ranworth, Woodbastwick and one or two get delivered in Salhouse to our churchgoers who live there too. In all 970 copies are printed. A few are left on the pews at the back of the churches for visitors but the rest get delivered. On behalf of the Parochial Church Councils of all the churches in our benefice, may I give, wholeheartedly, a big thank you to all those who trudge round both summer and winter. Dorothy Woods in Woodbastwick has a team of six people delivering, two of whom are over 90 years old! Some only have a few houses to deliver to but Len Clamp in South Walsham had quite an area to cover. Len has now decided to hang up his walking boots and our very special thanks to him. Someone has already agreed to cover the Panxworth Road, part of his round, leaving just Burlingham Rd, St. Mary s Close, Hamilton Close and the Lokes needing a volunteer or volunteers the round can be split up further. Please, if anyone feels able to help and cover a few houses could they contact Nick Garrard on Nick Garrard FUNERALS SS. 6 Broadsider reaches afar. Dear Nick I thought you would like to know your words on page one of the Broadsider have travelled from South Walsham to South Quay (London) and onwards to a Baptist Church in Uckfield, East Sussex. Each Monday morning our small group of colleagues exchange news and views on weekend events. Your words received equal billing with Downton Abbey. If you knew us you would realise that s quite some achievement. Thank you for providing us with such an interesting subject for discussion. Kind regards, Lorraine Ed.Wow! Just to remind you that Broadsider is published on our website: If you have thrown away an old issue and want to look back, issues from the last 18 months can be retrieved in PDF format on this website. Some months, The Broadsider is read online by up to 180 people. 6 Coffee Morning Tuesday January 3rd At Old Hall Farm South Walsham Supporting Farm Africa We will have a stall for those Christmas presents you don't quite know what to do with saying No reasonable offer refused Learn more about the Christian faith by using the internet Got an internet connection? And it s free! Both courses will start with an initial gathering on Tuesday, 10 th January This meeting is not essential but will allow those signed up for the course to meet face to face. The time and date will be arranged to suit the majority of those taking part. To book, please contact Caspar James on (Tues and Wed) or atcaspar.james@norwich.anglican.org
