3 Pastor-Lee Thoughts The month of May brings us two very special Sundays. The first is Mother s Day and the second is Pentecost. The modern American holiday of Mother s Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in Grafton, West Virginia. Anna s mission was to honor her own mother by continuing work she had started and to set aside a day to honor mothers, the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world [ We can all be thankful to God for our mothers special people in our lives. Pentecost is a much, much older celebration. It has been around in various forms for over 3000 years. Pentecost literally means 50 days and was one of the main religious celebrations started by the Israelites while they were in the wilderness. On Pentecost 50 days after the first Passover Egypt and the subsequent Exodus the Law was given to Moses on Mt. Sinai. Christians celebrate Pentecost for a different reason. Something else was given to us by God on this same day. Although still 50 days after the Passover, the Christian Pentecost is remembered as the day the Holy Spirit was given to the first believers in Christ. We celebrate this Sunday traditionally by wearing RED. Interestingly, did you know that Pentecost Monday is a public holiday in many European countries including Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Greece and also in the African nations Senegal, Benin and Togo? [ Pentecost is truly a day to celebrate! It is a day to be thankful to God for this very special gift. Let s see how much RED we will have at church on this special day! May God bless you all throughout this month. We truly have much to be thankful for! In His Service, Pastor Lee DEACONS, COMMISSIONS, AND SESSION MEETINGS The Deacons, Commissions, and Session Meetings for this month have been announced. The Deacons will not be meeting this month. Their next meeting will be on June 14 th. The Commissions will meet during the Coffee Fellowship on May 17 th. This will make it easier for all that are interested in participating in the Commissions to do so, since the meetings will be immediately after our Sunday morning worship. Fill up your plate and bring it with you to the Commission of your choice. Look for announcements in the bulletin regarding where each Commission will meet. The Session of our church will meet on May 19 th at our regularly scheduled 7:00 p.m. meeting time. All are welcome to attend and give their input at this meeting. 3
4 CHRISTIAN EDUCATION NEWS All kids are welcome to our regular Sunday School sessions which are held every Sunday morning following the Children s Message during the regular church service. Adult classes are held at 9:00 AM in the library. The nursery is available from 9:00 am until the end of the church service. WOMEN S BIBLE STUDY The Women s Bible study group is learning about the Parables of Jesus. The group meets in the Fireside Room on select Tuesday s of the month. Study books are in the Women s Bible Study slot in the church s mail room. Contact Barbara Sylvis with questions Don't forget the Food Bank as we continue to feed the ever-increasing number of hungry folks in our community. You are invited to make a generous financial contribution to this ongoing and vital church ministry. All checks should be made payable to HPC Food Bank, or put cash in an envelope marked "Food Bank." The Food Bank is in need of clean, plastic grocery bags. This an ongoing need, so if you have any available, please bring them to church with you any time you visit! PRAYER CHAIN If you want to solicit prayers for yourself or someone else, simply phone the church office and put in your request or, send your information to Karen Fallon at kate42nate@yahoo.com. Thanks to everyone who has offered to provide for the coffee fellowship on Sunday mornings. Some people have never done the coffee fellowship before, or might not have done it in a while. Here are some Dos and Don ts of coffee fellowship service. DO 1. Bring food and set up in Fireside Room Nothing extravagant is necessary. Try to bring something for someone with a sweet tooth and something for one with no sweet tooth! In other words, try fruit and cheese and crackers, or cookies and a veggie tray, or chips with hummus and a special dessert. 2. Clean up after coffee hour. This includes: washing out coffee pot, dumping tea water, if tablecloths and dishcloths are soiled take them home, wash and bring back next week, vacuum or sweep, take out garbage from fellowship room and kitchen. DON'T 1. Purchase plates, utensils and napkins as they are provided by the church. 2. Make coffee and hot water for tea. It will already be set up for you in the Fireside Room. Thank you!! 4
5 WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY CONTINUES The Wednesday Night Adult Bible Study continues to meet at 7:00 p.m. in the Fireside Room led by Pastor Lee. The study focuses on the Faith Lessons DVD series presented by Ray Vander Laan. Mr. Vander Laan is a teacher-historian that has taken tour groups to locations in the Middle East and Mediterranean region and taught them about the culture, history, and context of the Bible pertaining to the specific biblical location. We will be finishing the last volume of the series this month. It is called: Walking With God in the Desert. In the description for this volume we have the following: The weekly lessons for May include: When Your Heart Cries Out, They Were Not Wandering, Ears to Hear, and There s Hope in the Desert. There is always a Faith Lesson following the video to challenge us. All are welcome to attend. If you have never come to the Wednesday Night Adult Bible Study we would love to have you join us. Each lesson is independent of the others. We look forward to seeing you there! MEN S GROUP MEETING Saturday, May 2, :00 AM Fireside Room Breakfast will be served to include pancakes and sausage with coffee. Just come and participate in a fun time with your brothers in Christ. 6 Red Poppies In 1915, inspired by the poem In Flanders Fields, Moina Michael replied with her own poem: We cherish too, the Poppy red That grows on fields where valor led, It seems to signal to the skies That blood of heroes never dies. She then conceived of an idea to wear red poppies on Memorial Day in honor of those who died serving the nation during war. She was the first to wear one, and sold poppies to her friends and coworkers with the money going to benefit servicemen in need. Later a Madam Guerin from France was visiting the United States and learned of this new custom started by Ms. Michael. When she returned to France she made artificial red poppies to raise money for war orphaned children and widowed women. This tradition spread to other countries. In 1921, the Franco-American Children s League sold poppies nationally to benefit war orphans of France and Belgium. The League disbanded a year later and Madam Guerin approached the VFW for help. Shortly before Memorial Day in 1922 the VFW became the first veterans organization to nationally sell poppies. Two years later their Buddy Poppy program was selling artificial poppies made by disabled veterans. In 1948 the US Post Office honored Ms. Michael for her role in founding the National Poppy movement by issuing a red 3 cent postage stamp with her likeness on it. 6
7 In Honor of Mothers Everywhere THE BEAUTY OF A WOMAN The beauty of a woman isn t in the clothes she wears, The figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman must be seen from in her eyes. Because that s the doorway to her heart, the place where LOVE resides. The beauty of a woman isn t in a facial mole, But true beauty of a woman is reflected by her soul. It s the caring that she cares to give, The passion that she shows; And the beauty of a woman with passing years only grows. ~~~Maya Angelou MOTHERHOOD THE BEST CAREER A woman, renewing her driver's license, was asked by the woman at Registry to state her occupation. She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself. 'What I mean is, ' explained the woman at Registry, 'do you have a job or are you just a...? ''Of course I have a job,' snapped the woman. 'I'm a Mom.' We don't list 'Mom' as an occupation, 'housewife' covers it,' said the recorder emphatically. I forgot all about her story until one day I found myself in the same situation. The Clerk was obviously a career woman, poised, efficient, and possessed of a high sounding title like, 'Official Interrogator' or 'City Registrar.' ' What is your occupation?' she probed. What made me say it? I do not know. The words simply popped out. "I'm a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations." The clerk paused, ball-point pen frozen in midair and looked up as though she had not heard right. I repeated the title slowly emphasizing the most significant words. Then I stared with wonder as my pronouncement was written, in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire. 'Might I ask,' said the clerk with new interest, 'just what you do in your field?' Coolly, without any trace of fluster in my voice, I heard myself reply, 'I have a continuing program of research (what mother doesn't), in the laboratory and in the field (normally I would have said indoors and out). I'm working for my Masters (the whole family), and already have two credits (one son one daughter). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities (any mother care to disagree?), and I often work 14 hours a day (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most run-of-the-mill careers, and the rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money.' There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk's voice as she completed the form, stood up, and personally ushered me to the door. As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up by my glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistant -- age 2. I could hear our new experimental model (an 8 month old baby) in the child development program, testing out a new vocal pattern. I felt I had scored a beat on bureaucracy! And I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable to mankind than 'just another Mom.' Motherhood! What a glorious career! Especially when there's a title on the door. 7
