2 From Father Timothy Cloutier ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A FIFTH GRADER IN YOUR FAITH? This is the second of a weekly series of questions to help you in your self-assessment of the level of your knowledge of basic Catholic Christianity. Here are the answers to last week s Series A questions. Answers can be researched in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, noted as CCC. Biblical references are given in those texts of the Catechism. 1. Christians profess that there is only One God in a Trinity of Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, all sharing the one Divine Nature, and distinct only in their relationship with the other Persons within the Godhead. (CCC, 234, ) 2. No, there is no evidence of any sort that Jesus had siblings. The use of the term brothers and sisters in the Gospels included also in the culture of the time the extended family of cousins, aunts and uncles, even one s extended clan members, and was not limited to blood brothers and sisters of a nuclear family as we refer to them in our western culture today. (CCC, 500) 3. There are Ten Commandments. (Can you name them, even out of order?) (CCC, 2056, 2059, 2062, ) 4. John the Baptist was the son of the Temple priest, Zacharia and of his wife, Elizabeth, who was a cousin of Jesus Mother Mary. Jesus was also, therefore, John s cousin. As witnessed by Jesus, John was the last and the greatest of the prophets. (CCC, 523, ) 5. The word catholic comes from the Greek word meaning universal. (CCC, 750, 830) Applied to the Church, it means the one, universal Church of Jesus Christ. 6. There are four Gospel writers: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. (CCC, 120) Series B 1. What do we mean when we profess belief in the Apostolic Church? 2. How many Sacraments are there? 3. Why did God create us? 4. What does salvation mean? 5. What is the Golden Rule? 6. Who was Moses? Scripture Reflections for Next Sunday, 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time: Wisdom 1:13-15; 2:23-24 Here is a needed reminder: God only created good in the universe. Evil is not in what God created, but in our willful misuse of it, to our own destruction. 2 Corinthians 8:7, 9, Christian charity is nothing more and nothing less than the imitation of the love of Jesus Christ for us. St. Mark 5:21-43 Disease, death, and sin were all manifestly interrelated in the culture and the theology of the time. In exercising his mastery of one or the other, Jesus shows his Lordship over them all. The work of redemption is the healing of the whole human condition, ultimately completed in the eternal life of heaven. Totus Tuus and Vacation Bible School Totus Tuus will be coming to Maternity of Mary this week! It includes outside fun time, learning about Jesus from cool college aged missionaries, delicious snacks...and, at the end of the week, the children get to choose their 'favorite' teacher and make them into a Human Sundae with their favorite sundae toppings. Following that is a super Water Fight Competition that is not only fun but helps clean things up! The morning program is open 1st-6th grade and runs Monday-Friday 9 am to 2:30 pm. The teen youth group is for 7th-12th grade and runs Sunday-Thursday from 7:00 pm to 9:15 pm. We are also in need of high school and adult volunteers. Totus Tuus Pot Luck, Wednesday June 27 All are welcome to join us for our potluck this Wednesday beginning at 5 pm; please bring family and friends! Feel free to come late and leave early if need be. This is a great opportunity to meet our Totus Tuus team, enjoy the fellowship of others and good food! During the evening, the team leader will introduce the team and explain a little about the mission of Totus Tuus. Following, the team will lead the children in a few songs that they have learned thus far. Please sign-up to bring a dish to pass. Childcare will be provided. RSVP to Jen by Tuesday, June 26th: youth@maternityofmary.org. New Faith Formation/Youth Ministry Director Later this summer, there will be a change in our Faith Formation/Youth Ministry staff. Jen Andrysczyk, our current director, has discerned to take a position in her home diocese (see next weekend s bulletin for more details from her on her upcoming plans). We are pleased to welcome Austin Busse, who will work to form disciples of our youngest parishioners. Austin graduated from the University of St. Thomas and is spending his summer on staff with Catholic HEART Workcamp in Tennessee. Austin will begin serving Maternity of Mary at the beginning of August, but has already been actively involved in getting to know our parish and its youth and formation programs. We trust that the Lord will guide Austin and all of us to work to instill a spark for the faith and a love for the Lord in our youth! 2 Church of the Maternity of the Blessed Virgin St. Paul, MN

We believe money should never be a reason for families not to attend MMSA. For the upcoming school year, we awarded over $38,000 in aid to our families. If you would like to sponsor a child s tuition or contribute to our tuition assistance fund so that more can have the wonderful gift of a Catholic education, please mark on the memo line of your check, tuition assistance. Are you looking for a way to stay connected to Jesus and your fellow sister s in Christ over the summer? Join us for brunch once a month in Sirba Hall for fellowship, good food, prayer and a speaker. Our next gathering is July 14th and our own Sally Ennis will be our speaker! Alex Schindler will also be joining us to lead us in praise and worship music. Women of all generations are welcome. American Red Cross Blood Drive Our summer blood drive is Tuesday, July 10th from 1pm-7pm in Sirba Hall. We are dedicating this blood drive to Lovise Lorenz, who passed away this spring. Lovise was a devoted blood donor and when she couldn't donate anymore, she chose to volunteer at these blood drives. Lovise constantly had a smile on her face, a story to tell, an ear to listen and a plate of cookies to share. If you can donate blood, please do! If you can't donate, please think about volunteering a couple of hours (or an hour) just to keep our donors company; or maybe drop off a plate of cookies in honor of Lovise.
