2 Greetings Everyone - September has arrived with plenty of activities including summer s end and school starting again. Sunday school, confirmation, and 10:00 AM worship on Sundays starts up again for us at United Lutheran. We will be celebrating worship at the L Anse Waterfront Park on September 9 th at 11:00 with a pot luck following the service which means everyone bring a chair and a dish to share. Now with such activity there is more than a bit of labor involved and we thank everyone for participating in the work of the church. Speaking of labor; on the first weekend of September we celebrate Labor Day a day meant to celebrate and honor the honest labor of all men and women who work for a living, in or out of the home. In fact Labor Day essentially celebrates the American Labor movement and its contributions to our country. It was recognized and celebrated nationally in the United States by This is truly a time to be spent with family and a reminder to be thankful for all the work done over the years to give us a strong and vibrant country. Speaking of things strong and vibrant I would like to give a shoutout to St. Vincent de Paul Society. I do this not just to recognize the wonderful work they do within our community but also make us aware that September 27 th is the feast day of St. Vincent de Paul. Yes there was an actual living human being named Vincent de Paul who was canonized as a Saint. St. Vincent de Paul was a French priest who was quite active in ministry and charitable organizations. He lived from and is the patron saint of: charities, horses, hospitals, lepers, lost articles, Madagascar, prisoners, Richmond, Virginia, spiritual help, Saint Vincent de Paul Societies, Vincentian Service Corps, and volunteers. Overall he was a man who was not only active in his labors but who inspired and continues to inspire many people and organizations to labor in love for the good of communities. September is also a time when we celebrate and give thanks for all honest labor and is also a month that recognizes an individual St. Vincent de Paul, who in his labors, has encouraged and inspired people to labor in love for their communities throughout the world. 3 FELLOWSHIP HOSTS We are a family UNITED and what a great way to get to know each other better over coffee! But we need YOU to put on the coffee and be willing to clean up afterwards (and perhaps provide something to go with the coffee). Check the sign-up sheet in the barrier-free entrance. Remember, the focus is the fellowship so keep the food simple. All the monetary donations received during the Fellowship Hour go toward World Hunger. Worship in the Park Worship in the Park will be on Sunday, September 9 th at 11:00 a.m. at the Waterfront Park. Please note the change in worship time. We will have worship at 11 am and a potluck picnic following worship. Please bring a dish to share and a chair to sit on during worship. Join us for worship, fellowship, and fun! In case of rain, Worship in the Park will be held at the church and fellowship hall! ALL ARE WELCOME TO JOIN US! FALL WORSHIP SCHEDULE The Fall Worship Schedule will begin on Sunday, September 16 th with Worship at 10 a.m.; Sunday School at 10 a.m.; Adult Bible Study at 9 a.m. Monday worship will continue at 6 p.m. on Mondays. PLEASE NOTE: There will be no Worship on Monday, September 3 rd and Monday, September 10 th. Regular Monday worship will resume on Monday, September 17th.

BAKELESS BAKE SALE!! DID YOU KNOW that United Lutheran Church has many Education opportunities for members of all ages? We do! We are having a Bakeless Bake Sale to go towards the General Fund.

All you have to do is put your donation in the envelope, put your name on the envelope and either put it in the offering plate or bring it to the church office. No baking required for this bake sale!

5 BAKELESS BAKE SALE!! DID YOU KNOW that United Lutheran Church has many Education opportunities for members of all ages? We do! We are having a Bakeless Bake Sale to go towards the General Fund. There is an envelope included in this newsletter or you may pick up an envelope from the table in the Barrier-free entrance. All you have to do is put your donation in the envelope, put your name on the envelope and either put it in the offering plate or bring it to the church office. No baking required for this bake sale! For children ages 3 years through 5 th grade we have our Sunday School program. The children go up to church for the Children s Sermon and then head to the classroom for lessons and crafts. Sunday School begins in mid-september and goes through to mid- May. For middle school youth (grades 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th ) we have Confirmation. This is held on Sundays, after worship, a couple of times per month. The youth have some requirements to fulfill during their three years of Confirmation. On Pentecost Sunday, the 8 th graders Affirm their Baptism and become adult members of the congregation. For adult members we have an Adult Bible Study, which is held every Sunday at 9 a.m. beginning in mid-september and ending in mid-may. The group usually discusses the readings for that Sunday. At this time we do not have a Youth Group for high school youth. We need some people to lead this group. NOTE: This is a new page in our newsletter! If you have an idea or an article to put in the DID YOU KNOW? Page, please have it in to the office before the 10 th of the month.

6 GOD S WORK. OUR HANDS. Saturday, September 15 th We are very excited this year to partner with Mission United, Pelkie, and Holy Cross, Baraga, and the KBIC Department of Natural Resources. Conversations between the three congregations began several months ago about what we could do together for the community. We bounced around several ideas. One of the reoccurring thoughts we had was preservation of the land we all share. As stewards of God s creation we wanted to do something to help sustain beautiful mother earth. At the last Tribal Council Meeting Pastor Julie Belew attended, Karena Schmidt, Ecologist at KBIC DNR, gave a report on their efforts of protecting and expanding stands of culturally significant native plants and identifying and controlling invasive species on the Reservation that threaten the existence of our native plants. Can you imagine our woods and wetlands without blueberries, raspberries, wild rice, leeks, sweet grass, Lady Slippers, and Jack-In-The-Pulpit etc. Plants for food, ceremony, medicines, dyes, tools, construction, and basketry are all very important to the culture we share. Plants can exist alone; but neither animals nor men can exist without plants. Without plants, or when their balance is disturbed, the quality of life and existence declines. Basil Johnston, Ojibwa Heritage We are hoping our project will be planting dune grass at Sand Point but if the plants do not come in by September 15, we will be removing Japanese Barberry in fields off Brewery Road. All ages are welcome! We will meet in the parking lot at United Lutheran at 9 a.m. to car pool to our site. Details of what to bring (gloves, shovels) if needed will be forth coming. At 12:00 noon we will gather together for a potluck. Information regarding the potluck will also be forth coming! We look forward to seeing you all there and having a great time! SNOWBLOWER Do you need a snowblower? The church has one for sale. It works, but needs a little TLC. If you are interested, please make an offer. UPCOMING COUNCIL MEETING There will not be a council meeting in September. The next Regular Council Meeting will be on Sunday, October 14 th following worship (11:15 a.m.) Please remember that all council meetings are open to the congregation. Deposit for Contributions Did you know that even if you do not attend worship YOU CAN still give to your church? Go to your financial institution and tell them you want to set up a deposit to United Lutheran Church General Fund Account # ; SNB Routing # It is as easy as that! Thank you for supporting your church! WINDOW FUND ENVELOPES If you are interested in donating to the Window Fund to replace the windows in the education window, there are envelopes in the Barrier-free entrance.
