1 Parishes of Swords Clonmethan Kilsallaghan Donabate and Lusk Newsletter June 2014 Saint Columba's Church Restoration Fundraising Committee Update The Committee has been working away steadily. In April, we held a Big Movie Quiz in the Old Boro pub. (Regrettably, due to an error on my part, this was held on the same evening as the Girls' Brigade Display. I apologise for any inconvenience this caused.) The Quiz was very well attended, and thanks to everyone who came along on the night. Deirdre Moore and family organised the Quiz, so our gratitude goes to them, along with our blame for setting some very challenging questions! If you were in Swords for the Saint Patrick's Day Parade, you might have seen that we held a collection along the parade route. Here are our gallant collectors:

2 During the Swords 1014 Commemoration, Brian Scott from Saint Patrick's Church in Donabate and Bernadette Marks from Swords Historical Society kindly conducted tours of the church and towers, introducing many people to this beautiful and historic place. And at the Viking Village beside the Castle, we had another collection and we ran a stall promoting the Restoration Appeal, where you might have seen these fearsome Viking marauders: As we go to press, we're finalising the arrangements for a Choral Concert, featuring Fingal Chamber Choir, in the striking setting of Christ Church Cathedral. A journalist came to investigate the church and is writing a piece about it for Buildings at Risk series in the Irish Times, so if you take that paper, or even if you pay for it, please keep an eye out for the article next week. And more events are coming soon, as the campaign is only just getting into full flow! Sec. Fundraising Committee RESTORATION FUND LATEST! As we go to press, St. Columba s Restoration Fund has just received a terrific boost - 10,000 s worth to be exact! The donor has requested the gift be accepted anonymously. However, we cannot let the opportunity pass without publicly thanking them for their kindness and their generosity of spirit with which it has been given.

3 East Window in Donabate: We are delighted to announce the restoration of the stain glass window in St. Patrick s Donabate. Over the windy winter, the window started moving and was becoming unstable. The Select Vestry moved quickly to get the window repaired to prevent a larger cost. Before there was time for the lead to set, a kind and generous parishioner moved in and paid for the restoration, and we are most grateful to them for their generosity. This is Christianity in practice, especially as the donor did not wish to be known. The window was erected by the Archdechne-Butler family of Portrane, in memory of a young man who died in 1871 at the age of 33. He is interred, with other members of that family, in a large vault surmounted by a cross in the churchyard. They were related to the Butlers of Dunboyne Castle. The window appears to have come from Birmingham. The subject is Jesus reassuring Martha that her brother Lazarus will rise again. Niall Minto.

7 **** A must for all gardeners! **** BRINGING THE OUTSIDE INSIDE Dublin Garden Festival In Christ Church Cathedral Fri 13 th, Sat 14 th, and Sun 15 th June 2014 Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin will be transformed into a floral arcadia from Friday 13 th June to Sunday 15 th June. There will be displays of creative floral designs and a range of fun activities for all the family, including horticultural displays, petting zoo, Irish gourmet food produce, urban gardens, afternoon teas, garden stalls, craft demonstrations, and talks from renowned gardening experts Diarmuid Gavin, Dermot O Neill, Gerry Daly and Helen Dillon. Anthony Kelly (Holmpatrick & Balbriggan) has very kindly agreed to cover the parish in the event of pastoral emergencies whilst the Rector is away on holidays. He will be on duty from 9 th June - 2 nd July, and may be contacted on (01) or should need arise. SERVICE CHANGES IN JUNE: Please note the changes to the normal schedule..
