Brad Simpson, Pastor Becky Absher, Music Director Beth Pulliam, Clerk of Session From the Pastor As we look forward to Homecoming on Sunday, Sep. 30, everyone is invited to gather and celebrate our Presbyterian heritage, worshipping God with voices of praise and thanksgiving. The Rev. Bob Fiedler will join us as guest preacher. Bob served as a Student Intern at WPC during the pastorate of the Rev. Dr. Tom Sproule. A covered dish lunch in Hatcher Hall will follow the Worship Service. On Evangelism Sunday (Sep. 23), we remember Jesus Great Commission, Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. (Matt. 28:19-20). Responding to this commission, WPC is a family of faith that: Worships Together The Psalmist proclaims, Clap your hands, all you peoples; shout to God with loud songs of praise. For the Lord, the Most High, is awesome, a great king over all the earth. In worship, we are renewed for the journey of faith that God sets before us. In worship, we rededicate ourselves to living according to God s will and way. Along with our worship services each Sunday, we gather at the Cove Church each 3 rd Sunday of the month at 7:30 PM. Plan to come on Sunday, Sep. 16. Prays Together In his book, Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis writes, An ordinary simple Christian kneels down to say his prayers. He is trying to get into touch with God if he is a Christian, he knows that what is prompting him to pray is also God: God, so to speak, inside him. Through the prayer chain, Sunday School classes, PW Circles, the Friday morning men s gathering, and services on Sunday, there are many opportunities to share our concerns and joys with God through prayer. We pray with our individual prayers and we also proclaim our prayers together as one congregation. Serves Together Volunteers from Wytheville Presbyterian Church gather on the 4 th Wednesday (Sep. 26) of each month next to the HOPE Ministry Center to pack bags of food for hungry children. Others serve at Agape, the Wytheville Training School, HOPE, Family Resource Center, the Community Food Kitchen, the Presbyterian Children s Home, and multiple other Boards and nonprofit organizations. Learns Together On Rally Day (Sep. 9) we celebrate the many opportunities our church provides for learning about our faith and for understanding/interpreting Scripture. Reminder: Wednesday Evening covered dish supper begins at 6:30 PM on Wednesday, Sep. 12. The focus of the Bible Study will be, Prayer: Lessons from Scripture. Fellowships Together The church picnic at Evansham pool was a time of fun and fellowship for everyone! During the Fall, there will be other opportunities for fellowship (e.g. the Fall Festival on Wed. Oct. 24). Our journey of faith continues you are invited to journey with us! Peace and Grace, Brad

On Behalf of the Mission Committee, The Wytheville Presbyterian Church will pledge $10,000 to the Presbyterian Children's Home of the Highlands Centennial Foundation. Grace and peace, Beth Pulliam, Clerk Office Schedule: The office will be closed Monday, September 3 for Labor Day. 2 Presbyterian Women: Circle 3 will meet on Monday, October 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the Jones Parlor. Sunday School Information: The Stuart Campbell Class is continuing to meet and the Don Wysor Class is beginning a new book. The Children s Sunday School will be starting back on September 9. Cove Service: The Cove Services will be held on Sunday, September 16 at 7:30 p.m. Please plan to join us for this wonderful service of hymn sings and scripture! 60+ Adventure: On Tuesday, September 18 we will be traveling to Shatley Springs. We will leave the church at 10:30 a.m. Please call Scottie Kegley at by Friday, September 14 so enough transportation can be arranged. Stewardship Moment: Who Owns the World? Everything in all the world is God s. If we keep God at the center of our lives we will want to be good stewards of everything has given us. Our time, talents and our money. God knows our hearts and our situations. He hears our prayers. He put us on this earth to love and help other people. He goes before us as well as with us into each day. He made us his ambassadors. 3 Pictorial Directory: Wytheville Presbyterian Church will be having pictures taken for a pictorial directory on Friday, September 28 and Saturday, September 29. If you would like to be included in this directory, please mark those dates on your calendar and try to hold them open to have your pictures taken. Newsletter Information: Information for the October newsletter needs to be in the church office by Wednesday, September 26. Homecoming Sunday: Homecoming Sunday will be Sunday, September 30. We are so please to have Rev. Fiedler with us that day to give us the message. Rev. Fiedler was an intern with The Rev. Dr. Tom Sproule. We will have a potluck lunch afterwards in Hatcher Hall. The church will provide the meat and drinks. Please bring side dishes and dessert to share. The Wytheville Presbyterian Church Legacy Program On September 23 rd, Trustee Trent Crewe will be introducing the Wytheville Presbyterian Church Legacy Program during morning worship. A Legacy Task Force has been working since last year to establish a Program for the Church as a ministry for long-term growth and security. We love our Church and want it to always continue to be successful in serving our Lord. Our annual giving to the Church supports its on-going mission and ministries. Gifts to the Legacy Program will be invested for the Church s future. The members of the Task Force are Trustees Trent Crewe, Roy Hand, Bill Pollard, and Jim Willis. Jim Gearhart represented the Session, and Judy Crouse, Ann Harrison, and Dick Martel represented the Congregation. God has richly blessed our Church through the years, and our prayer is for His work to continue now and forever. Gideons International: Mr. Sam Sweeney from the Gideons was very pleased with the contribution of $ he received from our church on Sunday, August 12. Thank you for your generous support! School Supplies: Thank you for your generous contribution of $ for school supplies for Mt. Cap. This money was given to Legacy Church in conjunction with other churches. 900 backpacks were filled with school supplies, 800 new pair of jeans and tennis shoes given out, 200 haircuts were donated by local stylists at their back to school event on July 28 called Fusion. 200 volunteers from the community came together to make the day go smoothly. Pack the Bags Project: We will again participate in the Back Pack program sponsored by Hope. We will pack on the 4 th Wednesday of each month at 4:30 p.m. The new location is directly next to the HOPE offices at 680 W. Main Street in the former Southern Tire. Our 3

4 meeting date for next month is September 26. Presbyterian Children s Home of the Highlands Centennial Campaign Giving Children Hope and Purpose for the Future Wytheville Presbyterian Church s Pledge and Participation A history of the Children s Home records that, Since 1919 thousands of children have entered the doors of our ministry, each with one thing in common they needed a home. From our humble beginnings in Foster Falls to our current campus in Wytheville, we have been there to provide a loving home for girls and boys during the most difficult time in their lives. We believe that the best way to help heal from the hurt and anger they carry inside is to live in a home surrounded by loving professionals who are dedicated to show them a new and meaningful way to live their lives. In recognition and celebration of the Centennial of PCHH, an Endowment Fund has been established that will provide financial security for the ministry of PCHH for generations to come. With pledges from churches and individuals, the goal is to establish a $1 million endowment by the conclusion of As of this date, pledges have totaled over $200,000. In response to this campaign, on behalf of WPC, the Session of Wytheville Presbyterian has made a pledge of $10,000 to be given to the Children s Home by the conclusion of This gift will be made possible through individual members donations designated PCHH, 100 th Anniversary. Gifts sent directly to the Children s Home need to be designated for the WPC pledge if intended for this purpose. Also, the Mission Committee will be planning congregational meal(s) to celebrate this milestone at PCHH. 4 With our continued prayers and support, the ministry of love provided through PCHH will continue for years ahead! Mountaintop Workshop: Leaving Hope in our Wake: People of Faith and the Opioid Crisis This event will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at Royal Oak Presbyterian Church, 139 W. Main Street, Marion, VA. Keynote Speaker will be Rev. Jeffrey Allen, Executive Director of WV Counsel of Churches. Preacher in Worship will be Rev. Thomas Hay, Director of Assembly Operations, PC USA. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Lunch is $8.00 for pre-registering (april@abingdonpresbytery.com) or $10.00 at the door.
