1 Newsletter JULY/AUGUST, 2013 Volume 17, Number 7 & 8 Rev. Dr. Kenton D. Van, Pastor SUNDAY SCHOOL 9:30 WORSHIP SERVICE 10:30 The Wesleyan Quadrilateral Message from the Pastor Since early times the Church has had a way of testing doctrine to see if it is authentic (orthodox is the term) Christian belief. The test is to see if the doctrine is accepted in all places, at all times, by everyone. This is to say and show that the Holy Spirit is at work teaching and confirming that doctrine as true. Now, it is understood that there will be individuals or groups in times and places which will teach doctrine which is not true Christian doctrine. However, the rule of everywhere, everytime and everyone will overwhelmingly counter those spurious claims. It is the work of theology to find how those Christian doctrines apply to us today. A way of doing that assessment which has been time tested and proven effective and true is to rely upon scripture, tradition and reason. I recently read an article which spoke of them in a very helpful way. Think of them as a tower. Scripture is the foundation upon which all else is built. It is the rock solid base upon which we can rest for truth. The next part of the tower is tradition. Tradition is the consensus of the Church as taught by the Holy Spirit throughout the ages. Tradition is what we gain from orthodox doctrine (everywhere, everytime, everyone). Tradition can not go beyond the bounds of the foundation (scripture), but rather helps us to see how God through the Holy Spirit has taught and guided the Church through the ages. The final layer is reason. Reason cannot go beyond the bounds of the foundation (scripture) or second layer (tradition), but rather is used to see how those other two are applied to our particular situation. John Wesley added another thing to the mix experience. Experience can be seen as the recent continuation of tradition that which we add as we follow the Holy Spirit s teaching. Again, it can not go beyond the bounds of the foundation or second layer of our tower. Rather it adds to and fortifies true Christian teaching. As you seek to apply Christian teaching in your life, think in terms of scripture guided by tradition reasonably applied, then add your experience to the mix. God will bless you as you seek truth and a deeper relationship with God.
