1 June 14, 2018 Fellowship has a new Pastor!! AJ Mealor is currently a member in good standing of the Flint River Presbytery, having most recently served as the pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Moultrie, GA. AJ completed his Bachelors of Arts Degree in History with a minor in Political Science in 2006 from Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC. A self described Presbyterian from the cradle, AJ continued on to seminary at Columbia Theological Seminary, where he met his wife Katherine and obtained his Masters of Divinity in AJ and Katherine have two sons, Bryan (5) and Tucker (2). AJ s start date is July 1st, but he will not be preaching on July 22nd or August 5th due to prior commitments.
2 AJ s Personal Biography I was born and raised in Tucker, Georgia outside of Atlanta. I am a cradle Presbyterian, and have always been involved in the church. In 2002 I went to Presbyterian College with the intent of becoming a high school history teacher and football coach. In the summers after my sophomore and junior years, I served as the youth and activities director at my home church. This experience allowed me to see the church in a new way, and to form deeper relationships with people that I had known all my life. I felt called to ministry because I enjoyed witnessing the youth further develop their faith. From 2006 to 2009 I attended Columbia Theological Seminary. The education I received there allowed me to develop a deeper sense of call through gaining an understanding of the Reformed tradition and Presbyterian polity. It equipped me with effective tools for ministry in the church. While in seminary I served as an intern to the pastor at Rehoboth. This opportunity allowed me to put what I learned in the classroom into practice. I met my wife Katherine in seminary who has been a wonderful partner in marriage and ministry. Katherine and I are blessed to have two boys, Bryan, 5, and Tucker, 2. Since my ordination in 2011 I have had the pleasure of serving churches in Pennsylvania and Georgia. I served as an Associate Pastor for Youth Ministry for 3 and a half years at Neshaminy-Warwick Church in the suburbs of Philadelphia. For the past three years I served as Pastor of First Church in Moultrie. AJ s PIF Narrative Response Prompt: Describe the ministry setting to which you believe God is calling you. I believe the Spirit is leading me to a position in a healthy congregation where I can execute the gifts for ministry with which God has blessed me. I want to be part of a church where God s hope and grace reside within all of its ministries. I hope that my next ministry setting looks at the future with excitement, a willingness to try new things, all with a heart to transform the lives of others through Christ s love. I appreciate a church staff that works together collaboratively to create a cohesive program across all age groups to build disciples, serve, and glorify the Lord in everything that they do. It is imperative that the church staff and officers work together to lead the congregation through servant leadership. I hope that the officers will be at the forefront of service opportunities in the church and community.
3 AJ s Statement of Faith I believe in the one triune God: God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. I believe God created humanity to be stewards of the earth. Sin entered into the world through our unwillingness to obey and trust in God. It is through God s grace alone that we are saved. We are called to respond to God s irresistible grace through sharing this grace to others, especially the least of our society. But it is through God s grace that we are saved, not by our works. I believe God is revealed to us in the person of Jesus, through the divinely inspired scriptures. Scripture is the unique witness to Jesus the Messiah, which continues to speak to us today through the work of the Holy Spirit. Through Jesus we come to know God the Father. Through Jesus life, he showed us the way to live, and through the Messiah s death and resurrection, he saved humanity from its sinful ways and defeated death. I believe that Jesus is both fully human, and fully divine. I believe that Jesus continues to be present with us even now, through the work of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit illuminates Scripture so that it may speak to people of every time and place. As we strive to discern a calling for our lives, we reflect on our own personal experiences, and rely on the voice of the Holy Spirit and the witness of Scripture to help us hear God s call. Patiently we wait for Christ to return and bring about the kingdom of God and create a new heaven and earth. Until that time, through the help of the Holy Spirit, we strive to bring about the kingdom of God in this sinful and broken world with equally sinful and broken people. The sacraments of baptism and communion link us with the church universal - - past, present, and future. In baptism we are adopted into the body of Christ. It is for us a new birth in Christ. Through the Lord s Supper we are lifted up by the power of the Holy Spirit to the presence of Christ. When we dine at the Lord s Table we are fed with the bread and wine that symbolize Christ s body and blood and we are nourished both physically and spiritually through the power of the Holy Spirit. I believe that the church, though a human institution, is ordained by God, and the head of the church is Jesus. I believe that through the church the Word of God is proclaimed in word and deed. The ideal for the church is we are called to live in Christian community, holding each other accountable, and spreading the good news of Jesus Christ throughout the world, making disciples of all people. However, we fall short and make a mess of the church and our relationships with one another and God. Through extending God s grace and love we honor the different gifts and talents of the body of the Christ, and create community out of chaos. While we are called to different aspects of ministry each of us has qualities that allow us to minister to one another. We are a priesthood of all believers where every person has a place in the work and mission of the church.
4 Welcome, AJ, Katherine, Bryan & Tucker!!
