FRCS Practicum 2017/2018 Practicum experiences are listed in alphabetical order by school (junior and senior high), and include icons to help you make your decision. The key for icons is available on the bottom of each page of the document. JUNIOR HIGH OPTIONS Joshua Station $$ Leader: Mr. Hiltman Student Limit: 12 Cost: $150 This practicum does NOT involve overnights. Students will work with an inner-city Denver Ministry called Joshua Station, (I-25 and 8th Avenue), a branch of Mile High Ministries. Joshua Station is a ministry to families who are trying to break the cycle of homelessness. Joshua Station is an apartment complex where families can live in a clean, healthy and safe environment while getting the assistance and training they need to find employment. On this Practicum we will do a spruce-a-room project, preparing an apartment for a new family. It s like an extreme make-over reality show where we improve the physical appearance and comfort of an apartment in preparation for occupants. Your eyes will be opened to the reality of homelessness in our own backyard and how Christians are reaching out to this forgotten group of people. New Mexico: Native American Culture and Service $$$$ Leader: Mr. Sutherland Cost: $ (depending on number of students) The Native American culture is often overlooked in our society. It is a culture with a unique and difficult history as well as one of rich traditions in dance, art, and story. You will have an opportunity to learn more about this culture, explore areas of the Navajo tribe, and serve Rehoboth Christian School and the neighboring town of Gallup, New Mexico. We will be driving
to Gallup, New Mexico, and Rehoboth Christian School will be our hosts. We will shop and cook our own meals and joyfully serve the community together. We will have a blast hiking, learning about the wonderful traditions of the Navajo people, and hearing stories of how God has transformed lives. Washington D.C. Leaders: Mrs. Wise Students have already signed up for this practicum. COMBINED JR/SR HIGH OPTIONS Animals Around Denver $ Leader: Mr. Martinez Cost: $120 This practicum will visit the various animal sanctuaries and zoos around Denver. The students will visit The Denver Zoo, The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, The Wild Life Sanctuary, The Denver Aquarium, and the Rocky Mountain Arsenal. Students will learn about the importance of conservation of the animals God has given us as well as the environments in which they live. The students will also participate in an hour of community service at each site to get an idea of what they can do to help take care of all God has given them. From Mountain Top to Valley Low: Experiencing God $$ Leader: Mr. Hackett Cost: $ Enjoying God s creation is something many of us love to do. Being outside can help us clear our thoughts and focus on important things that wouldn t necessarily be considered part of the dayto-day urgent. As a group, we will be taking on multiple day hikes as well as a day of whitewater rafting. Students will be challenged physically as well as spiritually on this Practicum adventure. We will also be taking a day to give back by adopting a trail to clean up. So, if you would like to
have fun, show the love of Jesus through service, and be challenged both physically and spiritually, this Practicum is for you! Requirements: Must be able to hike at altitude 5-10 miles and be a confident swimmer. Being adventurous is a must! Music on the Streets $ Leaders: Mrs. Potwin Student Limit: 15 Cost: $ depending on numbers (the more students participating, the lower the cost per student) Meets the ministry graduation requirement Join us for a week of performing around the Front Range. We will spend the week performing at various locations including Boulder, Colorado Springs, and potentially places in the Denver metro area. We will get a chance to perform live music, entertain those that pass by, and even record our performances for a live album of sorts! Students will gain insight into live performance, ministering to others through music, and glorifying God with their talents. Each day will begin at FRCS where we will all meet to load up and head to our location for the day. Participants should be gifted musically or have some experience with audio/video recording. The days of performances will be Thursday and Friday; and the following Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The National Parks - God s Beautiful Creation $$$$ Leaders: Ms. Farnum Cost: $740 Students will visit four of our National Parks: Arches National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, Mesa Verde National Park, and The Sand Dunes National Park. The group will drive to each park and investigate the geological processes that formed each. They will be also journaling about the experience of witnessing God s creation and all its beauty. The group will be semi roughing it in KOA cabins and getting to know each other while cooking over the grill and sitting around the fire.
SENIOR HIGH OPTIONS Expedition Leadership $$$$ Leader: Mr. Wall Student Limit: 14 Cost: $400-$600 Expedition Leadership is designed to provide students with the opportunity to be involved with many aspects of the design, implementation, leadership, and participation in creating and facilitating an expedition experience. The students will choose and create their own practicum based on their collaboration and the instructor s (Mr. Wall s) guidelines. Trip must commence and end within a radius of 500 miles from FRCS. Students will produce and expedition plan, trip report, and lead the daily experiences of their choice. Trip objectives will reflect the risk management protocols of FRCS in addition to the skills, interest, and boundaries of all practicum members. Fly Fishing Colorado $$$ Leader: Mr. Spector and Kasey Antonio Student Limit: 11 Cost: $250 Colorado is one of the best places in the country to fly fish. From the Arkansas to the Yampa, from the Blue River to Lake Agnes Colorado is filled with beautiful scenery and wonderful water. On this practicum, we will tour Colorado, visiting the best rivers, creeks, streams, and lakes we can find. We will camp at night, and we will hike and fish throughout the day. Whether you re an experienced angler or a complete novice, we d love to have you on this Practicum. Please note: You should be comfortable camping. You should be in good enough athletic condition to complete moderate hikes and wade through moving water. The listed price for this trip assumes you are providing your own fishing license and gear (fly rod, reel, waders, and boots). If you need to acquire a license or purchase any equipment, please see Mr. Spector or Kasey Antonio for recommendations.
Harvest Farm $$ Leader: Mr. Taylor Student Limit: 12 guys Cost: $72-$155 (depending on number of students) Meets the ministry graduation requirement Join us for a week at Harvest Farm. It is a full running farm located just north of Ft. Collins. It is owned and operated by the Denver Rescue Mission and used for the purpose of getting the men in the program (who are recovering from drug and alcohol addictions) back on their feet. We will work alongside the residents in the program each day, helping during the spring planting season and taking part in other daily farm chores. We will also have the opportunity to encourage the guys as they strive to develop life long skills and walk with the Lord. We will stay in a cabin on the farm grounds. In addition to the daytime activities, we will have one evening to hear testimonies around a bonfire, and at least one other evening to spend doing something fun in Ft. Collins. We will head up to the farm on Sunday afternoon, May 21, and return Thursday evening, May 25. History of Colorado $ Leader: Mr. Harris Student Limit: 12 Cost: $80 This practicum is designed to expose students to the history of our great state of Colorado. We will explore the various museums and historical sites located around the Denver Area. Our focus will be on learning about our state s history (and other histories) through examining primary sources and seeing historical artifacts on display. The power of stories from history will also be an emphasis of this practicum as we learn that history is told through stories. One of the days will be reserved for touring and exploring some of Denver s oldest churches to get a sense of how Christians lived in Colorado s past. At the conclusion of each day, students will participate in a debrief where they will share about stories they have learned and stories they have created on that particular day.
Houston Rebuild $$$$ Leader: Mr. Stadick Student Limit: 12 Cost: $ Meets week long ministry graduation requirement We will partner with a church in Houston to come alongside families in the community that are still in need of help to either clear debris or rebuild from the hurricane. Potential projects include clean up, re-planting, painting, and building projects. We will encourage the people of the community with the love of Christ. Our home away from home will be at the church. So think sleeping bags and mattresses. Meals will be prepared and eaten together at the church as well. Life on the Ranch $ Leader: Mr. Montgomery Student Limit: 10 Cost: $90 Meets the week-long ministry graduation requirement Come along and enjoy spending a week at Bar Lazy J Guest Ranch. This ranch has been in operation for nearly 100 years and still needs a little TLC as it opens for guests. We will do a little painting, raking, light construction, checking equipment, and more. Evenings and off times will include enjoying the beautiful landscapes, a friendly game of horseshoes, or possibly even a night at the hot springs. Students who choose this Practicum should expect to work hard but look forward to the rewarding feeling at the end of each day of a job well done. You ll get a sense of what full time ranch life is all about! The generous folks of Bar Lazy J will feed and house us for the week! Runs Friday, May 19, and Monday, May Ranchers will be gone for the week, and anyone with allergies to animals or the great outdoors should not apply.
The Search for Nessie: A Tour of Faith and Literature through Scotland and Ireland $$$$ Leaders: Mr. Osberg, Mr. Butler, and Miss Dickinson Cost: $3000 NOTE: This practicum is during Spring Break; students will return in time for Easter Spring athletes will fill spots first. Join us on a Celtic excursion to the stomping grounds of our beloved St. Patrick. Scotland and Ireland lands not merely rich with lush greenery and ancient castles, but also rich with a deep ecclesiastical history. Explore the vast Moors of Ireland and castles of Scotland, while we pursue answers to some of the essential questions about the history of our faith, the beginning of modern evangelism, and the existence of ancient sea creatures. How has Celtic tradition influenced the way we engage Christianity today? Who is St. Patrick? Will the myths of Nessie prove to be true? The answers to these question and more, Spring Break, Silence and Wisconsin $$$ Leaders: Mr. Schulz and Mrs. Matthies Student Limit: 12 Cost: $450 The focus of this Practicum is on time and silence with God. Often when we pray to God, we see it as us asking God for things, and either He answers our prayer in the way that we hope for or He doesn t, and we are left to ask why. Or, we often will pray at God, not trying to listen to His call or His voice. We will begin a 40 day devotional that will help us practice listening and being still with God. We will also unplug from technology, and engage with each other as we discover Wisconsin. Each day we will have our silent times, debrief those experiences and then spend time learning about the place called Wisconsin. We ll do the first 6 days of the devotional as a group, and then hopefully get a chance after Practicum to talk about our trip as we ve realized what learning to hear God s voice is like and encourage each other to continue the discipline of silence before God going forward. Serving: Either we are going to be serve in the garden ministry of Blackhawk Church ( my.blackhawkchurch.org/portal/opportunity_detail.aspx?id=35) or we will serve in Eau Claire,
Wisconsin, at Hope Gospel Mission. This ministry serves the poor and homeless in the area ( Resources: 1. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality - 40 Day Devotional - Peter Scazzero 2. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality - excerpts from the main book - Peter Scazzero Viva Perú: Adventure in Perú $$$$ Leaders: Mr. Kim Student Limit: 12 minimum and 16 maximum Cost: $2,500 Meets the week-long ministry graduation requirement Perú short-term mission trip through Practicum is a win-win for eternity.
