2 We are a Catholic ministry that serves the poorest of the poor internationally by channeling aid through dioceses, parishes and Catholic missionaries, cost-effectively helping the poor break the cycle of poverty while advancing Catholic evangelization. Rather than create new institutions to distribute aid, we support existing ministries and churches already serving the poor. In addition to being the most cost-effective way of helping the poor, empowering these ministries allows us to support the Church s spiritual mission and its important position of leadership in poor communities. We consider every gift we receive as a precious resource from God. We direct every donation to its intended project, provide honest and accurate reports to our donors, and keep overhead costs to an industry low. We handle funds with utmost integrity and hold our ministry partners in the field to the same high standards by asking them to document costs and the impact of their outreach. We invite you to join with us as we seek to transform the lives of the poor materially and spiritually ways that please the Father and glorify him in Heaven and on earth.

3 Project Synopsis Description To provide food and counseling for poor and marginalized young women, many of whom are members of indigenous minorities. Purpose The women who reside at Villa Mornese have all expressed a desire to continue their education or pursue a religious calling. The sisters are helping them escape the dangers and health hazards of poverty by providing them with holistic care nourishment for their bodies and souls. Location Tuxtla Gutierrez, the capital of the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, where indigenous populations are plagued by poverty. Cost $23,100. Highlights Cross Catholic Outreach currently supports three shelters for at-risk girls administered by the Salesian Sisters, all located in the state of Chiapas. Villa Mornese Home specifically serves the needs of poor and needy young women who wish to continue their education or pursue a calling to serve the Lord. Most of these young women come from poor indigenous communities in the Chiapas highlands, where the living conditions are pitiful. Villa Mornese offers room and board including weekly counseling sessions for all the young women at the home for a small fee. The girls who come to Villa Mornese have all received a woefully inadequate education. A big component of the home s mission is the tutoring that the sisters provide. Catechesis, religious observances and daily prayers contribute toward the girls spiritual formation. Cross Catholic Outreach is committed to helping the sisters provide three meals a day plus psychological counseling for the 22 young women at Villa Mornese, but we need your help! 1

4 Overcoming a Dark Past Despite its cultural mystique and rich Mayan heritage, horrific poverty plagues the Mexican state of Chiapas and its capital, Tuxtla Gutierrez, and the indigenous people that make up most of this area s population seem to suffer most. These men, women and children make up the bottom rung of the social ladder in Mexico due to inadequate schools and a lack of formal job training in the areas where they live. The living conditions in indigenous communities are horrific. Families inhabit squalid mud huts with as many as 10 people sleeping together in one small room. Most rely on contaminated water from a nearby stream or well because clean running water and electricity are luxuries beyond their reach. In order to survive, poor children must often skip school to work alongside their families, and young girls especially those from indigenous communities are kept home from school more often than boys. This inequality of opportunity is a legacy of injustice that follows many young girls for their entire lives. While this situation is bleak, there is one bright beacon of hope shining in the darkness and it s called Villa Mornese. God has not forgotten these girls, and neither have the Salesian Sisters who run this unique outreach. some of whom are years behind in school, are finally given a safe and loving place in which to learn and grow. To empower their heroic efforts, Cross Catholic Outreach is partnering with the sisters to fund nutritious meals and psychological counseling for these young women but we need your help to make this possible. From the moment the young women arrive at Villa Mornese, they immediately begin a physical and spiritual routine that gives them the stability and hope they so desperately need.

5 The Ministry Villa Mornese provides three nutritious meals a day. In addition, the sisters teach the young women how to cook their own meals. Villa Mornese lifts high the Gospel of Jesus Christ and provides solid Catholic instruction. From the moment the young women arrive at Villa Mornese, they immediately begin a physical and spiritual routine that gives them the stability and hope they so desperately need. For some, it is the first time they have had consistent access to safe, clean shelter, nutritional food, quality health care and clothing. For others, it is an opportunity to deal with a dark past and develop positive life goals. Many who stay at Villa Mornese have fallen far behind in school, so they are studying for their high school equivalency. The sisters know that education is the key to escaping the vicious cycle of poverty. To help the women excel in the classes, they offer individualized tutoring and help them develop the vocational skills they need as they move into adulthood. In addition to the top-notch tutoring they receive, all the residents participate in psychological counseling to aid in their recovery from taumatic and dysfunctional situations they ve experienced. Because all the young women come from poverty, this is the first time most have enjoyed regular, nutritious meals. For the women of Villa Mornese, it is part of how the Lord is turning their darkness into light. The sisters help each girl strengthen her faith and grow up to become a moral young woman ready to follow Christ s teachings in her life. 3

6 Shine the Light of Christ! In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus tells his disciples that they should be a shining light for all to see: Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matt. 5:16) The Salesian Sisters of Villa Mornese are providing this light of hope for young women who have never known anything but darkness. They are helping them overcome their troubling past and preparing them for a brighter future. To succeed in this ambitious goal, they need help from Cross Catholic Outreach and from compassionate friends like you. By providing nutritious daily meals and counseling for impoverished young women, you will bear witness to the love of Christ the shining light for all to see.
