1 NEWSLETTER September
2 FROM THE MINISTER S STUDY Dear Friends, I am sorry about this. A friend of mine always wanted to be run over by a steam train. When it happened, he was chuffed to bits! (Tim Vine) When Sarah and myself first received the news that stationing had matched us with the Nottingham North Circuit we were chuffed to bits. Moving here had been our first choice out of all the possible appointments in the book and so we were absolutely delighted both with the match and everything we discovered when we came to visit. Since that time, people have been incredibly kind, generous and welcoming. We would like to say an enormous thank you to so many people, but especially to David and Val for everything they have done on behalf of the Circuit for us as a family. As a new minister joins a Circuit there is always a welcome service. When I started my previous appointment in Coventry and Nuneaton I was one of 3 probationers and 2 ordained staff who joined at that time. The beginning of ministry is something of a whirlwind and so perhaps not surprisingly I would have struggled to remember very much about this service. I know the service involves both ministers and the churches making promises which should shape our life together, which sounds like something I probably should have remembered. However, for this article the truth is that I had to look these promises up! The first comes when the Chair of the District asks the new minister: Will you hold before us the story of God s love and mercy, above all, the Gospel of our Saviour Jesus Christ, and will you be among us as one who preaches the word of God, administers Baptism, presides at the Lord s Supper, teaches the faith, and cares for the flock? The minister replies I will. These are two very daunting words. Fortunately, they are quickly followed by the prayer I ask God to help me. Without this prayer I know the Circuit would be in big trouble! In the days and weeks ahead please do join me in this prayer that God will indeed equip and inspire my ministry in the Circuit.
3 Far more important than the promise the minister makes is the invitation that follows. Having asked for God s help the minister then says, I invite you all to join with me in proclaiming the Gospel of life and hope. The work of sharing God s love, mercy and hope to our world, a world in desperate need, is shared among all God s people. The task of sharing our faith, growing in faith, helping others do the same and caring for the people of God s world is the mission and ministry of all the church. In this fundamental calling, the whole church commits itself to being the people of God, following the way of Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit. Again, in prayer may we all ask God to enable us to play our part in proclaiming the Gospel of life and hope. As Sarah, the girls and myself join you on this journey, I hope that we can all remember and live out the declaration we make in the welcome service: Through Christ, we have Good News to share. Love, peace and joy. Andrew SUNDAY SERVICES FOR SEPTEMBER Services are held each Sunday at am and 6.00 pm. 4 CHURCH S 50TH ANNIVERSARY AND HARVEST FESTIVAL Please join us on Sunday 18th September to celebrate 50 years of the Church on its current site. Our former ministers have all been invited to the celebration and seven of them are coming to our special service and lunch. It promises to be a great occasion and a lovely chance to meet old friends who have played such a part in the story of Nuthall Methodist Church. This Harvest Festival service will be followed by a bring and share lunch. A list of the items required is on a noticeboard in the church coffee lounge. Please put your name against an item. We need cooked jacket potatoes, hot dishes to top the potatoes, along with prepared salads, other side dishes and of course cakes and desserts. We also need volunteers on the day to help serve the food, tidy up and wash the dishes after the lunch. If you can help please speak to Tina Harvey, Kirstie Dane or Sue Perrett. We look forward to seeing you and celebrating this wonderful anniversary! A short history of the church is included in this newsletter. The first time we could do this would be on Sunday morning 18th September, before the 50th celebration/harvest service. If you would like to be part of this, please come along to a one-off practice for this event on Sat 17th Sept 10-11am when we will run through the songs in the church. You don't need to have been in the previous 'HIS' group or read music, just enjoy singing (words will be provided). Self-sufficient musicians are very welcome too! See Lorna Page for any queries. 8 LETTER FROM LORAINE MELLOR Dear Friends and Colleagues, By now you may have realised that I have been designated as President of the Methodist Church for 2017/18. I consider this to be a great honour and privilege and I look forward to travelling around the Connexion and meeting our Methodist people. I am grateful to those who nominated me, but most of all I am grateful to God for his love, care, blessings and the honour of serving his church in this way. I am thankful too for the many expressions of...congratulations from around the Connexion and especially from the District for the cards, texts, s, letters, flowers and gifts, the generosity and prayer support has been truly overwhelming. You may be wondering what this entails and what happens in the District during my time as President. Well first let me reassure you that the District will be in the very safe and capable hands of Revd Mike Redshaw and Revd Paul Worsnop as Deputy Chairs and the District team. The presidency is over a three year period: During year one I will be attending a variety of meetings some of which I already attend in my role as Chair. This of course will increase and Mike, Paul and I have been working together now for some months and have already agreed what roles we share and we feel this has been working well. We now all offer preaching appointments across the District, pastoral care is now much more coordinated and we have been able to respond to requests coming to us from the Superintendents. We are also continuing Prayerfest until the end of the calendar year and also a new initiative which we hope to inform you of soon that we have called Chair s team talks" this will be coming to a church near you in the new Connexional year. In year two you will see much less of me though I do intend to honour any preaching appointments I have already made for 2017/18 in the district. During this year I will travel the Connexion encouraging the Methodist people and I hope you will pick up a prayer card and follow Jill Baker the Vice President and I as we travel around. I will endeavour to put as many updates on social media as I can. The arrangements for the District will be on the agenda at the District Executive when we meet in September and we will of course keep you fully informed. In year three I will be back in the District and it will be much like year one and picking up the Chair's role again. I hope this gives you a flavour of the next three years and I will of course update this page when further information is available to us. I know I serve the best District in the Connexion, and I am very confident about us being able to work together in the coming months and years and as I travel around the Connexion I will be telling lots of stories about the great things that are happening here as we seek to serve God and build his kingdom. In prayer, Loraine 7

FUNNY THINGS CHILDREN SAY In school, the vicar was showing a painting of Jesus to a class, but understand, it s not really Jesus, just an artist s impression of him. Well, said one child, It certainly looks like him. Some seven year olds were asked to draw a scene from the bible. They were busy and silent for 15 minutes, drawing the crucifixion, the nativity scenes, etc. One lad had a bearded figure driving a car with a sad looking man and woman in the back seat. Gently the teacher asked which scene from the bible had he drawn? Well, Miss said the boy, quite proudly, It s God driving Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. 8
