That is the practice of thoroughly cleaning a house when springtime comes around. This is especially prevalent in climates with a cold winter like Wisconsin. Spring will officially begin on March 20 th, but I can t wait for the weather to warm up, for the days to get longer, and for the flowers to appear again. I can t wait to open the windows for the fresh springtime breezes to blow through the house. I can t wait to clean the windows to let more sunlight in as well. I love Spring! As I prepare for retirement this summer, I am looking around my office about how I can organize my files and folders that seem to accumulate everywhere I look. I want to de-clutter my desk and shelves to make my work area more beautiful and presentable this spring. I am throwing out and recycling old papers that are out-ofdate that I no longer need. I am even deleting old s that pile up in my inbox. Spring cleaning for my laptop! According to Wikipedia, some researchers trace the origin of spring cleaning to the ancient Jewish practice of thoroughly cleansing the home in anticipation of the spring-time memorial feast of Passover. In remembrance of the Israelite's hasty flight from Egypt following their captivity there, during the seven-day observance of the Days of Unleavened Bread which immediately follows the Passover, there are strict prohibitions against eating or drinking anything which may have been leavened or fermented with yeast (Exodus 12:15, 19). Next Article Deadline: March 21 Articles for the March newsletter are due No Later Than Monday, March 21st.

2 2 GRAPEVINE VOLUME XXIII, ISSUE 3 Jews are not only supposed to refrain from leavened foodstuffs, they are expressly commanded to rid their homes of even small remnants of chametz for the length of the holiday. Therefore, observant Jews conducted a thorough "spring cleaning" of the house, followed by a traditional hunt for chametz crumbs by candlelight on the evening before the holiday begins. Early Christians continued the practice, conducting a spring cleaning traditionally between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. Spring cleaning persists today in Greece, and other Orthodox nations. It is traditional to clean the house thoroughly either right before or during the first week of Great Lent, which is referred to as Clean Week. When we engage in a thorough spring cleaning for our homes physically, we can also work on a spiritual spring cleaning of our hearts and our lives. We can de-clutter our mind and soul, to simplify our emotions, wash away the old guilt, and let in more light and love of God this spring. Happy Easter! Pastor Ric Your Financial Team January was a pretty good month. It was about as close as one can get to a break even month. Expenses exceeded income by $1.36. If we can keep it that close for the rest of the year, I ll be one happy camper. With the announcement on 2/14 of the new clergy, we have enough information to complete the 2016 budget and are working on it at this writing. We will provide an overview of the budget when the Administration Board approves it. It will be closer to a balanced budget than we ve had in the past. I want to remind the congregation that the purchase of scrip cards will help us meet our objective of a balanced budget. Also, the billing tree is back. We would like the congregation s input; Should we have another 10 dollar challenge? If you have other ideas we are open for suggestions. IT OUT at St. Luke s Library Need some uplifting? Try one of the daily devotionals here at the library. We have many from past years but would work just fine for 2016 too! We will have some out on the display shelf outside of the library for you to look at. These book are a wonderful way to spend a few moments with God. I highly recommend it. Thank you to all who have donated to our church library. A large donation has been given for everyone to enjoy from Jeanette Houwers. These fiction books are in excellent shape and waiting for a lucky reader to check them out!

Prayer Stations will be open on both Good Friday and Holy Saturday from 9:00 am- 9:00 pm in Room 111. Come and travel the stations of the cross at your own pace. Join us for worship on Easter Sunday. He is risen! Our Sunrise Service is at 6:30 am at the Deland Park Shelter on Broughton Drive. The service will be led by Pat Weisrock with Communion served by Pastors Ric and Kathy. The 9:00 am Worship Service will be held at St. Luke UMC. There will be NO Sunday school on Easter Sunday or April 3. Maundy Thursday is an alternate name for Holy Thursday, the first of the three days of solemn remembrance of the events leading up to and immediately following the crucifixion of Jesus. The English word "Maundy" comes from the Latin mandatum, which means "commandment." As recorded in John's gospel, on his last night before his betrayal and arrest, Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and then gave them a new commandment to love one another as he had loved them (John 13:34). This is why services on this night generally include the washing of feet or other acts of physical care as an integral part of the celebration. While John's gospel does not record the institution of the Lord's Supper among the events of this night, the other gospels do. Christians therefore keep this night with celebrations both at the basin (foot washing) and at the Lord's Table (Holy Communion). (

4 4 GRAPEVINE VOLUME XXIII, ISSUE 3 Lenten Movie Series 2016 Pastor Kathy is hosting a soup and movie event each Wednesday in Lent from 5:30 7:00 p.m. and going through March 23 rd. We will begin with a time of food and fellowship, followed by watching the movie in 30 minute segments and then 30 minutes or so of discussion. Please invite your neighbors and friends to join us. Information about the movie follows. Any questions? Call Pastor Kathy at or her at katr40@aol.com. Jesus is a 1999 Biblical television film that retells the story of Jesus. It was shot in Morocco and Malta. It stars Jeremy Sisto as Jesus, Jacqueline Bisset as Mary of Nazareth, Debra Messing as Mary Magdalene and Gary Oldman as Pontius Pilate. disciples. The film's chronology entails a cinematic blending of the Four Gospels with the addition of extra-biblical elements not found in the New Testament Accounts. It provides a down to earth approach through its focus on the human aspect of Jesus. Compared to more solemn and divine portrayals in earlier films, Jesus expresses emotions weeping at Joseph s funeral, throwing stones in Lake Galilee upon meeting Simon Peter and James son of Zebedee, dancing at the wedding at Cana, and starting a water-splashing fight with his While the film mainly presented familiar Christian Episodes, it provides extra-biblical scenes such as flashbacks of his first trip to Jerusalem with John as well as scenes of war and destruction waged in the name of Jesus during the medieval and modern times. Likewise, the film's Satan comes in two different forms: a visual exemplification of a modern man and a woman in red, instead of the traditional snake that can be found in most films. The film also adds a composite character, an apocryphal Roman historian named Livio who watches and comments as events unfold, which helps the watcher of the movie understand better certain events and how they unfold.

Serving with you through Love in the Name of Christ, Katie Popp, Executive Director THANK YOU from the Mission Committee. At the February 13th Emmaus Meal, we had GREAT things happen: 27 volunteers including: 11 from Crossroads Community Church which included 9 high school girls & 2 chaperones from a small Bible Study group within their youth group. 2 new members from St. Luke serving for the first time. To call several volunteers to tell them we had too many people, which was awesome by the way! Served 205 plates of cheesy hash browns with ham & peas, fruit dish and yummy desserts. This includes those that wanted seconds. We spent about $217 to provide a hot meal. Next 2016 Emmaus Meals: July 30 & Dec 10.

Children of all ages are invited to wave palms and march through the church during the opening hymn. Help us reenact how the children welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem. Help us remember and honor our Risen Savior. Help us begin the Holy Week with a bright, cheerful celebration. We will meet at the back of the sanctuary at 8:50 am to receive palms. Children will stay in worship with their families. Sunday school will be at 10:30 and starts in the chapel for a gathering time of song, prayer, and a brief review of the Bible stories for the morning. We will all be studying John 13:1-17 when Jesus washed his disciples feet. Take time as a family to study the various parts of Holy week. Find below the scriptures and the events that marked how Jesus ministry and actions would change not just Israel, but our world forever.
