1 Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors... The people of the United Methodist Church St. Luke United Methodist Church 623 Ontario Ave Sheboygan, WI Phone: Sunday worship 9:00 am Worship service 10:00 am Coffee hour 10:30 am Sunday school for all ages, September-May Church staff Cindy Thompson Pastor Emily Gilbertson Dir. of Children s Ministries Josh Holte Director of Youth Ministries Amy Holte Office Administrator Barbara Gruenke Treasurer Rick Thimmig Custodian Sara Hochstetler Housekeeper Ann Hoppert Keller Music Coordinator, Choir Director Faye Sippel Nursery Attendant GRAPEVINE Volume XXIV, Issue 8 August 2017 From the Pastor Dear Friends in Christ, I have been especially blessed in the last week by the important ways that my ministry partners at St. Luke and my ministry colleagues beyond St. Luke are committed to our partnership in ministry. Everyone on staff here sees their work as ministry. My clergy colleagues, especially Ric Olson, Dave Anderson and Roger Clapp contribute generously to the ministry that we share. As I marvel at these partners in ministry, both clergy and lay, it makes me wonder who else at St. Luke God is calling to ministry in our midst. If you have been thinking about, praying over or wrestling with a sense that God is calling you to ordained ministry or any specialized role of leadership in the church, I am available to talk with you. I have great respect for the process of discerning without rushing or pressuring anyone pondering a call to ministry. In the same way I am available, if you are deciding a first career path or career change. God s call and claim on our lives is important in all vocations, not only those God is calling to ministry leadership within the church. I look forward to many conversations in the days and years to come about how God is working in each one of us for ministry in and beyond the walls of St. Luke. Peace, Cindy Arody Carrazco & Ann Rodewald Pianist/organist

We completed June with a balance of a bit over $3,800 and our apportionments have been paid through June. Again, thank you. Also, Marion Fisher provided for St. Luke in her will and the estate has been settled. Proceeds of the will and memorials from the funeral will be directed to the Trustees for an electric sign in front of the church. Adult Sunday School All are welcome to the adult Sunday School meeting in room 212 this fall. We will be looking forward to three studies. The first two will use books by Adam Hamilton. The first study is Moses in the Footsteps of the Reluctant Prophet. This is a six week study of the epic account of his life, together with the deliverance of the Israelite slaves from bondage in Egypt, one of the defining stories of the Jewish people. The story tells something to us about God, about ourselves and about God s will for our lives. The second study uses Making Sense of the Bible- Rediscovering the Power of Scripture Today. This book is divided into two sections. The first section titled The Nature of the Scripture looks at both the Old and New Testament, questioning who, when and why they were written. The second section is concerned with making sense of the Bible s challenging passages. A possible third study will use the book The Wesley Challenge by Chris Folmsbee who is a protégé of Adam Hamilton. The study asks twenty-one questions which John Wesley asked of himself and his early friends during meetings at the Lincoln College at the Oxford University.
