2 Dear Friends in Christ, One of the things that has been so much fun to watch this year as one of the pastors of this congregation is the ways in which we have reached out beyond ourselves to meet the needs of people in our community and around the world. Whether it was feeding children around the North Scott Community through the Feed Our Children Ministry, providing backpacks filled with supplies to the North Scott schools, cleaning up a neglected cemetery as part of our work at the Youth Gathering, providing support for Hurricane and Fire relief through Lutheran Disaster Response, or any of a number of other ways that we have reached out, it is easy to experience our growing passion for carrying God s love into the world. We have taken seriously Jesus word as recorded in Matthew 25 where Jesus tells us that when we serve the least of these, we are serving Jesus. I also am confident that there are other ministries that we dream of doing to find new ways to share God s love in the world. Sometimes, however, we struggle to find the funds to make these ministry dreams a reality. In 1999, the congregation of Faith Lutheran Church established the Endowment Fund to enhance the outreach of our congregation. The goal was to receive gifts and bequests that would enable us to support programs beyond what is possible through the annual operating budget of the congregation. This Fund could be used to enhance the mission of Faith Lutheran by providing support in the areas of missions, outreach programs and capital improvements. Because this is an endowment fund, there is a principle amount that must be maintained, and the income off of that principle is used to do ministry beyond the operating budget. These assets are administered by a five-member Endowment Fund Committee which has been elected by the congregation. This Committee, however, has never been able to use any of these funds because there was a minimum principle amount of $50,000 set before the income from the Fund could be used, and that threshold has never been met. So, now, as we near the 20 th anniversary of the beginning of this Endowment Fund, we are hoping to get a chance to use it. We are only about $5,500 away from the $50,000 needed to begin to be able to use this income to dream of ministry we would like to do. The cost for sponsorship is $40/month for John and $45/month for Jenna. During August we welcomed to our Faith family through the waters of baptism Adelheide Rose Brodersen. Heidi is the daughter of Thomas and Alexis Brodersen. Her sponsors were Trisha Toohey and Andrew Brodersen. THANK YOU TO the BULLETIN AND AMBASSADOR CREW for your help getting these publications assembled each month!!! You ladies fill the church with action, laughter and love! Joni 2 15

Therefore, this member is setting a challenge for the congregation. During the months of September and October, this member is willing to match, dollar for dollar, any contributions made to the Endowment Fund up to $2,750, to reach the goal of $50,000 in the Endowment Fund. If you would like to participate in this challenge, we invite you to write a check to Faith Lutheran Church with Endowment Fund in the memo line, and every dollar that you give will be matched to help us reach the goal. We will watch our progress on a display in the Gathering Space beginning on September 8 and 9. Thank you to the one who is setting this challenge and to all of you who will help us to reach our goal. This is an exciting time!! In addition, on Sunday, September 30, Mike Kleinfelter, Regional Gift Planner for the Foundation of the ELCA for Iowa, will be here to talk with us about leaving a legacy after we are gone. During the Sunday School hour, he will talk with us about how we think about those people and institutions that mean the most to us and plan to leave a legacy gift with them. He is also available at any time to meet with those who are interested in further and more personal conversation to help you set up your legacy gift plan, perhaps including the Faith Lutheran Endowment Fund in that plan. You see these are exciting times as we continue to consider how we can bring God s love from this place into the world in new and various ways, and we invite you to continue to be part of the process in the funding, in the dreaming and discerning, and in the doing of God s mission for the life of the world. Blessings, Pastor Carrie 3

7 Service in the World Due to the generous contributions of our congregation, we were able to pack and distribute 3 backpacks, packed full of supplies, to each of the 5 elementary schools in the district. In addition, 2 packed backpacks were taken to each Junior High and High School. Once again we are humbled by your generosity. Thank you so very much! -Service in the World Committee God's Work Our Hands Save the date! God s work. Our hands. Saturday, September 8, River Bend Foodbank packing weekend backpack food for school children. 3 shifts available am, 10:30-12:30, and 1-3pm. Please register online. This day is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. Service activities offer an opportunity for us to explore one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans: that all of life in Jesus Christ every act of service, in every daily calling, in every corner of life flows freely from a living, daring confidence in God s grace. You work every day to make your community a better place. Let us continue doing this work together in 2018! Please follow these instructions to register online for your reserved event(s): 1. Visit the River Bend Foodbank event registration page: rFaithLutheranChurch (This link will only display the events specifically reserved for your group). 2. Select your desired event and follow the on screen instructions to access the CERVIS registration system. If this is your first time using the CERVIS online registration system, you will be prompted to create a Volunteer Profile. Event Reservation Code: FaithLutheranChurch We encourage you to wear your gold God's Work. Our Hands.T-shirt. If you would like to purchase one for $8.00, call the church office at Hope to see you there! 10 Financial Update As we head into another program year, it seems to be an appropriate time to provide another financial update. The table below shows you where we stood as of the end of July in comparison to where we stood at the end of July We continue to be thankful for all that you have given to God s mission through this place as we are in a much better financial position this year than we were last year at this time. At the end of July, our income nearly $8,000 behind our spending. Part of this negative balance comes from the fact that giving tends to go down in the summer because people are away more of the summer. Another part of it is that we had some significant ministry happening over the summer, including sending 10 youth and three adults to the ELCA Youth Gathering in Houston and sending 13 youth and six adults to Lutheran Lakeside Camp for camp and the adult mission trip. We would ask that, if you are behind where you wanted to be in your giving at this time of year, you would please consider how you might bring your giving up to your desired amount. If you are considering where you might gift some additional income, please consider making an extra gift to Faith. Year to-date July Year to-date July Operating Income 181, , Operating Expense 189, , Income (Loss) (7,922.72) (21,945.77) We are thankful for each of you and for your generosity to this congregation and to the ministry that we share. Blessings to you as you get back into the school year routines.
