3 Hopewell and Wesleyan Chapel Churches, I want to thank all of you for the many ways you allowed me to be your pastor. During these past several months you began preparing for your 150th and 190th Anniversaries, respectively. During this time I ve read the list of the pastors who have served you since the birth of these churches. I wonder about the experience of those pastors of who preceded me. I wonder about the people they served. What did their passion for Jesus Christ look like? In six years I ve watched my children grow up - one was even born in the parsonage. I ve had the happy privilege of preaching God s Word, baptizing children, and officiating marriages. I ve experienced the sad privilege of officiating funerals and sitting with the sick and suffering. Together, we have all realized a few dreams and lived through some trials. While I am leaving you, there is one who remains constant: Jesus Christ, who "is the same yesterday and today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). If through the power of the Holy Spirit you allow Jesus to guide you, The Susquehanna Charge will always have a mission. It may not look like the church you see today. There may be difficult decisions which need to be made. But a passion for Jesus will see you through all your future trials. This passion guided the earlier congregations of Hopewell and Wesleyan Chapel, a passion which allowed them to navigate their own trials. They managed and flourished; so will you. I trust in Christ that you will have a wonderful future. I pray that under Pastor s Sarah's leadership you will find new ways to connect with the neighborhood and invite more people to join you Sunday morning. Finally, I share with you the words of the Apostle Paul to the Corinthian church: "Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain (1 Cor.15:58). In Christ, Pastor Corey Can Pastors Return to their Previous Congregation? The Baltimore Washington Conference requires congregations to publish their policy ( 2412) as it pertains to this question. If you have any questions, feel free to contact a member of the Staff Parish Relations Committee. 1. As of the effective date of a new appointment, a pastor shall immediately cease all pastoral counseling and pastoral visitation with members or member families in the previous appointment. Since appointments are generally announced several weeks in advance, each pastor has adequate time in which to affect closure and make appropriate referral to another for the pastoral care of members. 2. Pastors shall have a clear understanding with former congregations that they will not return to officiate at baptisms, weddings, and funerals, or do pastoral counseling or pastoral visitation in that parish. Pastors, active or retired, shall respectfully decline to participate in such duties when invited by members of a former congregation. Declining all such invitations is the responsibility of the previous pastor. The present pastor, at his or her discretion, may invite the previous pastor to return for pastoral functions. However, the present pastor should never be under any pressure to invite the previous pastor. 3
4 A MESSAGE FOR THE YOUNG AT HEART ON MOTHER S DAY CAME WITH A SPECIAL VISIT FROM BRITTANY Love's many forms Joy is love exalted; peace is love in repose; longsuffering is love enduring; gentleness is love in society; goodness is love in action; faith is love on the battlefield; meekness is love in school; and temperance is love in training. 5 Greetings Brothers and Sisters in Christ! I know this is an exciting time in the life of the Susquehanna Charge as the anniversary celebration approach. It is also a joyful time for my family and I as we prepare to join you in ministry. I am honored for the opportunity to be your pastor and to get to know you as a church family. I look forward to learning about your memories, experiences and gifts as Disciples of Christ. In anticipation of our journey together let me share a little about myself and my family. You may already know that I earned my Master of Divinity from Wesley Theological Seminary and will be taking the Provisional Elders Examination in January. My journey to this moment arose from the desire do more to respond to the gospel. It is Matthew 25:31-46 that lead me to commit myself to a life of ministry. In this passage, the nations are judged and some are welcomed into the kingdom. When they ask why the response is: whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me (v.40). I am convicted by this passage of the need to be present with God and the community working to share the gospel but address the needs of God s children. When I am not actively engaged in ministry, I enjoy photography, gardening, and visiting with people. Patrick and I enjoy Oriole s baseball and anticipate enjoying games at Ripken Stadium. As a family, exploring parks and generally being outside are our preferred hobbies. Our children Preston (5), Beth & Maggie (4)- all love reading (and being read too), riding bikes and playing outside. Preston enjoys building and learning about machinery. The girls love animals and playing with their dollies. It can be hard to tell Beth and Maggie apart but have no fear despite their similarities they have different personalities and aren t offended if you ask them their names. We are all honored to be joining your church family and look forward to getting to know you in the days and weeks ahead. Until then, may the peace of Lord be with you. Pastor Sarah Everyone who helped support our recent Flea Market with donations and time setting up and cleaning up, it was much appreciated. Our original date was May 7, 2016 and we were blessed with three (3) postponements due to rain. We were truly blessed by those rain dates as we ended up with a profit of $1,385.39, so a big THANK YOU TO ALL!!! FROM THE LADIES OF WESLEYAN CHAPEL UMW 5
6 ALTHOUGH WE MUST SAY FAREWELL IT IS NOT GOOD BYE JANICE IS so much a part of Wesleyan Chapel History that we must acknowledge a few things she contributed over the years. Dale started attending church in early 1960's at Chapel by himself. Daughters Karen and Susan were babies. When they became old enough for Sunday school, the whole family started to attend. In mid-1970's Janice became Superintendent and Teacher for the Sunday school and held that position for about 20 years. She was the best at getting recruits and keeping things going. She prepared the bulletin for at least 15 years, and kept the copier running until the recent replacement came. In May 1978 she created the first church newsletter which was a quarterly edition until 1989 when Linda Branscome took it over until In February 1999 the newsletter was officially named the Chapel Chatter by Lois Bannister, a former church member who is now deceased. Lois and Sandy Abbott became the editors after Linda until September Janice always wanted the newsletter to be monthly and became editor again in 1999 and turned it into a monthly publication. She kept that responsibility until March 2013 when Joan Cregar became the new editor. Not sure what year this started by she started the Prayer Request group, and was a major mission worker in the Fleece Blanket mission, worked at Grace Place, the Edgewood Mission, Citizens Nursing Home, and supported the Youth Group. She was a choir member for many years. She also has been the "go to" person for new pastors and new church members over the years. Her example as a Leader, Elder, Mentor and Christian Disciple has been a light to all. We will miss you Janice! With Humble Thanks Joan My son Tim with Rain, our rescued Corgi. A happy chicken. New pup, Hawkeye, Pierce My Heart. 6
7 Please join us as we help Janice Hash celebrate her new adventure and say farewell to a Wesleyan Chapel United Methodist Faithful Member When: Saturday June 25 th, 4pm -? 8 Dear Hopewell UMC, Thank you so much for the lovely prayer shawl! It was certainly an unexpected blessing. Please express my gratitude to Kate Frye who made the shawl--she certainly does amazing work. I particularly loved the little cross in the corner! This prayer shawl will be a source of comfort and will be treasured for years to come. May God bless you all and your ministry. Pauline Brewer Dear Hopewell Prayer Shawl Ladies, Thank you so much for the beautiful prayer shawl you made for Josephine. We will cherish it forever! Love, Katie, Tom and Josephine Ms. Janice, Thank you so much for the beautiful prayer shawl. I'm always cold and will use it often. It is also the color of my cancer -- dark purple. I love the added touch of the little cross. Thanks again and God bless you. Jamie Rood Reaching Out to the Community Clothing Drive: June 18 This is a great day at Chapel when we fill the parking lot with tables of clothing, shoes, etc., for those in need. Everything is free to include lunch. However, we need your help to go through your clothes and donate items that you no longer wear. We take winter and summer clothes. Ask your family and neighbors to help also. As you gather items, they can be brought to the church for storage until the event. Also, please make sure items are clean and not torn. "Reflecting His Love" My prayer to God is that you see his presence when you look at me. His steadfast love has set me free, and his reflection I can be when God is shining bright in me. MaryAnn Sundby It is only in the giving of oneself to others that we truly live. Ethel Percy Andrus The gift of yourself If you could only sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet; how important you can be to the people you may never even dream of. There is something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person. Fred Rogers 8
