THOUGHTS FROM THE EDITOR: It takes lots of people to make up a church family, everyone giving their gifts as they have the ability and time. So much of what is done is behind the scenes. Planning worship, decorating the altar, preparing music, baking goodies, fixing the sink, spreading news and events and checking on the shut ins, are some of the things that get done every month. As we go into the summer months and the thoughts of travel come to mind it is important to participate in the activities here at home. Wesleyan Chapel does outreach missions both locally and abroad through our volunteers. In the past we have travelled to South Carolina and West Virginia, but our work here at home is just as important. Reaching our own community is the goal of our Clothing Giveaway. You can help by just donating your extra clothes. Bring a child to VBS and help raise support for the Casey Cares Foundation. Come to Threads of Hope and make a prayer blanket for someone who is sick. How about a play date at the parsonage? Strengthening families helps our community from the foundation up. For Father s Day you can visit a sister church that has been revived by dedicated friends. Fellowship is at the heart of a church, and we need you there to make it happen. Join Us. 2
3 Gluten-Free Preaching? Gluten-free food is an exploding sector of the food industry, ensuring millions of Americans there is no wheat, barley, rye in a product. For some, gluten-free food protects them from health complications, and for others, it is simply part of healthy eating (although one questions the health benefits of eating gluten-free Girl Scout Cookies). According to Charles Spurgeon, the nineteenth-century British pastor, the opposite is true when it comes to preaching: A sermon without Christ in it is like a loaf of bread without any flour in it. No Christ in your sermon, sir? Then go home, and never preach again until you have something worth preaching. For Spurgeon, the gluten of the gospel must be kneaded into every Christian sermon. Here are 3 ways to remove the gluten of the Gospel from a sermon: 1. Gluten-Free Interpretation We cannot bypass Christ when explaining the meaning of any biblical text. A sermon must do more than mention Jesus, or even appeal to his example. It must connect the meaning of the Bible to Christ s gracious work for us in His life, death, and resurrection. 2) Gluten-Free Illustrations The juicy anecdote must show some aspect of God s sovereignty, our sin, or Christ s redemption. A Christ-centered illustration moves people to Jesus. A gluten-free illustration merely entertains them. 3) Gluten-Free Application Christ-less application comes in many varieties: self help, life tips, moralism, and more. In every case, the preacher highlights what the text means for the audience without touching on the Christ-centered, kingdom-focused, Spirit-driven way that the text is calling them to live. Charles Spurgeon also said this about the dangers of gluten-free preaching: advertise it all over London, Mr. Baker, that you are making bread without flour; put it in every paper, Bread without flour and you may soon shut up your shop, for your customers will hurry off to other tradesmen. A sermon without Christ as its beginning, middle, and end is a mistake in conception and a crime in execution COFFEE WITH THE PASTOR June 8, 6:30 at Chapel The word angel appears in our English Bibles over 200 times. What did they look like? What did they do? Did everyone in biblical times believe they existed? We will spend the evening enjoying fair trade coffee, organic muffins, and a lively discussion about these messengers from God. 3
4 SERVING OTHERS Grace Place: This past May, Havre de Grace prepared homemade meatball subs with pasta salad and chips to our 77 hungry guests. Rock Run topped off the meal with a variety of homemade desserts. Wesleyan Chapel will be providing and serving the meal in June. In order to promote good health Upper Chesapeake Hospital sent a nurse to provide Blood Pressure checks. Grace Place continues to receive donations from Weiss, Panera Bread and Wawa. Now Aberdeen s Shoprite has also started providing donations of bread and bakery items. Plan to join us in doing God s work to help others on June 9th at 9:00am. Everyone is always welcome to come to Grace Place to do God's work by serving others. Edgewood Shelter: Joan Cook and Jan Brewer prepared and served Meatball subs, pasta salad, chips and cookies to eleven people (all take seconds) and filled 8 carry outs. Had a little left which shelter kept for another day. Rose Whyte will prepare the meal for June and Janice Hash will serve. Blankets for Upper Chesapeake Children s Ward: Our ladies have been busy making fleece/no tie blankets and fourteen blankets will be delivered to the hospital last week in May. We can always use more help making blankets and also can use donations of fleece or money to buy fleece. We will not be getting together again until September, but for those interested, they can be made at home. See Janice if interested or for questions, janicehash@comcast.net. Free Clothing Day June 20: This is a way that we can reach out to the community by providing free clothing and lunch. Of course, the donations of others is what makes this a success. We will take all types of clothing (winter and summer) and there is always a need for children s clothing. Questions? Call Janice at or janicehash@comcast.net. 4

A dad is someone who wants to catch you before you fall but instead picks you up, brushes you off, and lets you try again. A dad is someone who wants to keep you from making mistakes but instead lets you find your own way, even though his heart breaks in silence when you get hurt. A dad is someone who holds you when you cry, scolds you when you break the rules, shines with pride when you succeed, and has faith in you even when you fail. Unknown 6
7 VOICE MAIL We have all learned to live with "voice mail' as a necessary part of modern life. But have you wondered - what if God decided to install voice mail? Imagine praying and hearing this: Thank you for calling My Father"s House. Please select one of the following options; Press 1 for Requests Press 2 for Thanksgiving Press 3 for Complaints Press 4 for All Other Inquiries I'm sorry, all of our angels are busy helping other sinners right now; however, your prayer is important to us and will be answered in the order it was received, so please stay on the line. If you would like to speak to: For fun Feeling footloose and frisky, a featherbrained fellow forced his fond father to fork over the farthings and flew far to foreign fields and frittered his fortune, feasting fabulously with faithless friends. Fleeced by his fellows in folly and facing famine, the fellow floundered as a feed-flinger in a filthy farm. Fairly famished, he fain would have filled his frame with foraged food from fodder fragments. Fooey, my father s flunkies fare far finer! The frazzled fugitive forlornly fumbled, frankly facing facts. He fled forthwith to his family. Falling at his father s feet, he forlornly fumbled, Father, I ve fruitlessly forfeited family favor. The farsighted father, forestalling further flinching, frantically flagged his flunkies to fetch a fatling from the flock and fix a feast. The fugitive s faultfinding brother frowned on fickle forgiveness of the former folderol. But the faithful father figured, Filial fidelity is fine, but the fugitive is found! What forbids fervent festivity? Let flags be unfurled! Let fanfares flair! For answers to nagging questions about dinosaurs and where Noah's Ark is, please wait until you arrive here. Our computers show that you have already prayed once today so please hang up and try again tomorrow. This office is closed for the weekend to observe a religious holiday. THANK GOD, HE DOESN'T HAVE VOICE MAIL; AND HE LISTENS WHEN WE PRAY! 7

9 This year the Susquehanna Charge Vacation Bible School Mission is to support the Casey Cares Foundation. The Casey Cares Foundation is a dedicated uplifting organization that provides programs with a personal touch for critically ill children and their families. The Casey Cares Foundation understands that although they can t cure the heart-wrenching illnesses, they can support the families in compassionate and creative ways. As one social worker stated, "Your organization is like this little jewel that then gets placed in their lives to help provide opportunities for these children and their families to relax, laugh, celebrate, and be recognized as the special people they are." The Casey Cares Foundation has a dedicated team of caring staff with years of experience in the field of helping critically ill children, many of who volunteer their time The Foundation was founded in 2000 by Casey Baynes who overcame many personal and business obstacles in her life, including dyslexia. At a very young age, she was told that school would be very difficult. While learning was definitely a challenge, she managed to receive her AA degree before graduating high school and went onto become Towson University's youngest Master's Degree recipient at age 20. After working for a children's non-profit, Casey left to help run her family's business. However, after missing a sense of fulfillment, Casey decided to leave that position to follow her heart. She initially met with social workers at hospitals and parents of children fighting cancer, sickle cell disease, cystic fibrosis and other lifethreatening illnesses to find out how she could lessen their stress and make a difference in their lives. Casey began assisting five Baltimore families. Since then the charity has grown to serving hundreds of families throughout MD, DC, VA, WV, DE, and PA. She has received many top honors and awards locally and nationally for her hard work and devotion for this worthwhile foundation. Casey is married to Mike and has 3 young children: Mackenzie, Jake and Hunter. VBS is only a 3 day event this year. In order for them to reach their goal VBS is reaching out to the congregation for donations to help support this worthy cause. They will be collecting money and the following donations until June 28. Microwave popcorn Movie candy Popcorn Bucket (they have these at the dollar store) $10.00 gift cards to Red Box $20.00 gift cards to Dominos or Papa Johns Pajamas for children of all ages, teenagers, and adult sizes small, medium, large or x-large Hopewell s Mission Committee has already graciously donated 10 pairs of pajamas. Monetary donations may be placed in the offering plate of Hopewell and Chapel each Sunday. Please make checks payable to Hopewell UMC in the memo state VBS Case Cares. Items to be donated maybe place in the box located in the Narthex at each Church. The children and volunteers of VBS thank you in advance for your generosity for assisting them in this mission. 9
