1 the voice Matthew This past church year our Gospel readings have been focused on Matthew s account of Jesus. And before we move on to Mark for the next liturgical year at the end of November, let s give Matthew one last hurrah. Matthew was one of the original 12 Apostles, and before becoming a follower of Jesus, was a tax collector working in Capernaum (Matthew 9:9). He never identifies himself as the author of the Gospel, but has been widely agreed as such since the early Church. Matthew references more OT passages than any other NT writer. This feeds right into what Matthew is proclaiming Christ to be for his listeners: Jesus is the promised Son of God sent by the Father to fulfill the OT and save God s people from their sins. For our author, Jesus was exactly that for Matthew. Christ accomplished this by dying in perfect obedience to the Father and gloriously rising from the dead. Matthew was a firsthand witness of the resurrected Lord. From tax collector / sinner to forgiven follower of God s Son, the Holy Spirit then drove Matthew to proclaim that in Christ, all has been fulfilled. contents: The Shepherd s Voice 1,2 Birthdays and Anniversaries 3 Calendar 4 LWML/WOF 5,6 October 2017 The Voice of Faith is a monthly publication of Faith Lutheran Church of Naples, Florida. Please address comments and articles to: communications@flc-naples.org The deadline for submissions is the 15th of every month.
2 Our Doors Were Open As many of you know, we have been planning for such a natural disaster as Hurricane Irma for years. It was my dream to be the first church in Naples to open after a major storm. The storm shutters, screens, and front doors (and most importantly God s Grace) made it possible for this dream to be realized. My wife Joanne, my son Dominic, and I, stayed at Faith during the Hurricane, so that we would be ready for people to come to a refuge from the storm. Our home was flooded and un-liveable, so as it turned out, this was our refuge also. I believe we took the full force of nature s fury and, by the Grace of God, this church, and my family, survived. Standing directly in the eye of the hurricane, we could see sunshine and blue skies which was a beautiful sight and a sense of hope for us all. Your prayers made such a big impact as we celebrated being children of a Gracious God. Right after the storm, I went out to our sign board to put up a message of Hope to the Southwest Florida community. I put out the message: HURRICANE GONE - FAITH REMAINS On Monday (September 11), we heard on the local news that Faith Lutheran Church was open as a Cooling Center. We took in families with special needs children to sleep, fed dinner for the first 7 nights to crowds of , and had numerous people stop by to pray, charge their phones, sit in the air conditioning, and pick up and drop off donations for the people of Immokolee, Everglades City, and East Naples. It was a humbling experience but one God has been preparing Faith for years. We have set up a fund at Faith Lutheran Church to continue to serve God and our neighbors in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, in fact we are making Hurricane Irma Relief our Mission of the Month for October! Thank you for your support, your volunteering, and most of all your prayers! The prayers help us weather this Hurricane and the storms of Life. God bless you all, and remember Faith Remains! Pastor Don Treglown 1
3 A Pastor s Prayer There is a beautiful prayer in the Bible. It is written by Paul to the Christ followers in Ephesus (Ephesians 3). These verses are a pastor s prayer for the people God called him to serve in Jesus name. In this part of the letter, Paul first lays out what he was called to do: preach to them (the Ephesians) the boundless riches in Christ and how those things, once hidden by God, are now fully manifested in and given through Christ (3:8-11). And then he prays for them. Paul prays that God would strengthen the Ephesians by the Spirit so that Christ will make His home in your hearts as you trust in Him (3:17, NLT). It is absolutely reassuring, comforting, completely baffling, whatever verb participle you can think of that of all things to call home our Savior s home is with us. Christ wants to dwell in and be with us. That is our Lord s desire and Paul prays for the people to experience it to see how wide, how long, how high, how deep Jesus love is for His people (3:18). The more I think about this passage in God s Word, I find myself humbly identifying with Paul and where he was when he wrote this letter. I was not in Naples during hurricane Irma, I traveled up north. Paul was not with the Ephesians, he was away in prison (no, I m not calling my parents house prison). Yet even still, they were on the forefront of Paul s heart; he prayed that God would fill each of them with His Spirit so that they would know for certain that they are incredibly loved by the incredible God. This certainly was the case for me while the storm was going on, the weeks after, and remains so to this present moment. You are on the forefront of my heart. But I speak not just for myself. God has blessed Pastor Treglown, Pastor Hildebrandt, and me to be your pastors. As our Father daily guides us, we pray that under every circumstance, our Savior Jesus daily makes His home in your hearts. Though it is too great for any of us to understand fully (v. 19), may you experience Jesus love for you as we all live out this amazing gift of faith we ve been given. Now all glory to God, who is able, through His mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Glory to Him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen (Eph. 3:20-21). Your ever praying brother, Pastor Sam 2

Ephesians 2:8 CELEBRATING 500 YEARS OF THE REFORMATION Featuring a presentation by ECHO What We Do - ECHO is an information hub for development practitioners around the world. We gather solutions from around the world that are solving hunger problems and disseminate them to our active network. These solutions promote sustainable farming techniques, nutritional plants, and appropriate technologies. They are well tested and proven to be successful over and over again. The urban poor face high prices and low incomes, making nutritious food unattainable. Rural families are often malnourished because of a lack of diverse nutrients in their diets, if they have enough to eat at all. In both cases, children suffer the most. Our purpose is to help those who are teaching farmers around the world know how to be more effective in producing enough to meet the needs of their families and their communities. They in turn teach others and the ECHO effect continues! In 35 years of assisting development workers around the world, ECHO has become the go-to organization for challenges faced by individuals and organizations. Since all of our funds come from caring individuals like you, we work very hard to keep our expenses low. Thanks to our efficient management and model, Charity Navigator gave us a Four Star rating. Please join with ECHO as we provide the solutions to end world hunger! 6
